Why are the sacrum and coccyx fused together? These five vertebrae are separate in children and young people. They begin to fuse in late adolescence and early adulthood and are usually fully fused by age 30. The sacrum acts as the base of the spinal column, as well as the back “wall” of the pelvis. They are fused as this enhances their weight bearing capacity! The sacrum forms the posterior pelvic wall and strengthens and stabilizes the pelvis. Joined at the very end of the sacrum are two to four tiny, partially fused vertebrae known as the coccyx or "tail bone". The coccyx provides slight support for the pelvic organs but actually is a bone of little use.
Thankyou! This video was so helpful! I am studying to become a personal trainer and the course I am doing mentions all these terms without actually going in to detail about them, but I find If I understand the processes I find the terms a lot easier to remember, rather than just memorising them.
Why the coccyx is said to be vestigial? The coccyx currently serves as an anchor for muscles; that wasn't its original purpose, so that's why it's considered vestigial.

Why is there no intervertebral disc between C1 and C2? The second cervical vertebra, C2, is called the axis. It does contain a vertebral body and also contains a peg-like process called the dens which projects up and articulates with the atlas so there is no intervertebral disc between C1 and C2.
There's a lot of fiddly little bits of bone that surround the spinal cord. It must be hard to put it back into place when someone breaks their back Watch your back everyone
The thoracic spine consists of 12 vertebrae numbered T1 to T12. They are referenced by number and each one does not have a specific name. Hope that helps 😊
Most people are born with 5 sacral and 4 coccygeal vertebrae. By adulthood, the 5 sacral vertebrae fuse to form a single bone called the sacrum and the 4 coccygeal vertebrae fuse together to form a single bone called the coccyx (tailbone).
