Originally launched in 2019 under the VS moniker, the Pure Drive 98 is defined by its controllable power. In addition to offering the most compact and surgical head size in the Pure Drive family, this stick gets updated with a tighter 16x20 string pattern, giving players the needed control to swing bigger when loading the ball with pace and spin. For 2025, Babolat adds comfort with an updated version of NF2 Tech, a dampening technology that uses flax fibers in the throat to smooth out harsh vibrations (a welcome feature, considering the stiff beam). This model also inherits FSI Power from the previous generation, consisting of a bundle of technologies that enable the racquet to transfer more energy to the ball (think easy power). Other features include Babolat’s HTR System, a layup construction that stiffens the hoop in a way that not only enhances power but creates more stability and less frame noodling on off-center impact (think rebound control). In addition to its enhanced dampening, the 2025 Pure Drive 98 continues to offer an irresistible combination of speed, power, spin, and precision.

One of the rare occasions where I prefer the 100 in every capacity. Usually I want a smaller head size, and prefer the 98” FX to all other “power” frames, but this feels like a stick made for advanced players. The sweet spot compared to the 100 is night and day, and it is one of the most unforgiving rackets for off center hits. It’s almost like they tried to make it a little more powerful players frame and kind of mucked up everything that made the old PD 98’s so good. It also feels weirdly more harsh than the 100 on the arm, despite being “softer” and thinner.
When will the 2022 ezone line be on sale?
Balanced review. The report of elbow & wrist pain is concerning... Wish they would have tested with Soft polys or even a Hybrid poly/multi.
It's a common problem with the Pure Drive racquets. Putting a bit of weight in the handle helped with my Pure Drive Roddick. Still uncomfortable though and I hardly ever use it.
Good points, but in order to review the racket objectively I'm sure they have to keep the string setup similar if not identical to what they normally use in order to have a true feel for the frame. That said, I currently have the last gen PD in my rotation and I must say the full bed Velocity completely changed the racket's playability for me. Soooooo much more comfort compared to the full bed RPM Blast I was using it with before which killed my wrist for a while.
@@tankhaiduong3742 I didn't even bother with polyester when I bought my first Pure Drive 98 (the 2021 model), I immediately started with a full bed of Velocity MLT 1.25, black of course! Looks killer! And at 24 kgs (52.9 lbs) it's still powerful enough AND the higher tension helps with control (normally I have my 98s strung at 22 kgs / 48.5 lbs).
Nice color
Question for Michelle and Tiffani: You both said you have a long history with the Pure Drives, which was your first Pure Drive model that you ever used and do you remember what year you started using them?
I think both of us used the same one initially, and if I am not mistaken it was the 1st Pure Drive in the US market, I switched to it in 2001 and used the Pure Drive Team + swirly and I am fairly certain that is the same one Tiffani had initially too (hers may not have been extended). I had to find a racquet to switch to the summer before I went to play college tennis because Prince had discontinued the one I had been using and they kept sending me new ones to try and I didn't love any of them. Landed on the Pure Drive and used it through college; switched to Wilson after college as they offered me a sponsorship (switched the the white/green nCode) and then switched back to the Pure Drive a couple years later when I started coaching college and had used it for years after. I think my 1st racquet of choice at TW was the Pure Drive Roddick. Hope that helps answer your question a bit without too much info :)

How many hours do play testers actually spend on each racquet they review? Michelle mentioned she tried many strings in just this racquet.
I may have cheated a little in this playtest…when Babolat first told us about this racquet I asked for a sneak peek because I was so excited and got the chance to hit it months before the playtest started so became pretty familiar with this one and was using it a lot! Got to add weight, move weight, try different strings, etc! A playtester’s dream!

Can you compare this to the Aero 98 feel and performance?
Less spin, more power, harder to use.
Another pure drive that's coming out?!?!?! What could it be?
Reigning in the power of a Pure Drive seems to defeat the purpose.
Personally, I love it! There is so much power in the 100 sometimes and this is a nice option for anyone who just needs a bit of added control!
Michelle, TW
@tenniswarehouse You're not wrong about the power in a PD 100. It's the serve king. I just wish it would magically transform into a Pro Staff after I hit my serve.
Try it. You have to experience it to understand it properly. Even at 24 kgs / 52.9 lbs (Veolicity MLS) my Pure Drive 98 is still powerful enough and the best weapon against serve cannons. The control is really just an ADDED feature.
@@tenniswarehouse I agree. The power of a standard Pure Drive is such that the little of it that you relinquish for the addition of control making it a 98 is not taking away any of the Pure Drive-ness of the racquet at all.
It's like an added Bugatti model that now "only" does 250 mph instead of the regular's 260.
