      Me too! I dated a woman whose Mom was Gable's Administrative Assistant for 20 years at U of Iowa and from what Judy said he was as amazing a man "off the mat" as he was on. A truly inspiring champion and American hero! God bless him and his family. -WC

    It’s amazing that gable didn’t give up a single point in the Olympics. No one will ever be able to duplicate that. That’s another reason why he’s the best

      Mike Lampert It actually happens all the time. Jason Cox just won his second world championship without being scored on. Call dick when the world without being scored on last year too. And I saw two of the Russian guys not get scored another.

    Great video, Dan Gable is one of my favorite true athletes that I believed in. I wrestled in high school and when HBO did a documentry on him in 2000. It gave me motivation to be the best I could be in the sport. Placed in top 20 ranking in Sacramento bee, California in 2001. Thanks to my coach, Jimmy Fechner. For training me so hard, through the off season, summer.

    Dan Gable is one of the greatest sports personalities in USA
    His knowledge about all styles of wrestling was phenomenal
    His amazing work ethic and leadership qualities made him a champion and a successful coach
    I'm from india where wrestling is considered a cultural sport we honour wrestlers a lot
    Many great wrestlers came from india like Great gama, Dara Singh, Sushil kumar etc. You can Google about this guys
    But Dan gable was the only one who made me interested in the sport of wrestling
    He's an American legend

    He then avenged his (single NCAA) loss to Larry Owings during the Olympic trials, outscoring his opponents in the Olympic & trials combined 130 to 1.

    Gable. The best. I wrestled high school 158 lbs, only was varsity my senior year and won the metro championship. Gable was an inspiration to us. Owings was too as we were close to the University of Washington. But no one motivated us like Gable.

    My dad wrestled at ISU in 71 and so did my uncle Don and Ron Glass they were twins. I never even knew they did or were any good or were champions until I was in high school. They were all very humble including Dan and still are! Except my uncle Ron Glass RIP. Love seeing this on here I’m happy I randomly searched it after talking about the olympics and Dan with a stranger from Iowa! Haha!

    Beautiful quality. The footage of him wrestling is so clear and the colors are gorgeous. Makes it seem much more real and relevant when compared to the other existing footage. The level of competition has drastically improved, but it's important to note that the cinematic frame rate makes the wrestling look a hair slower than it truly was.

    He absolutely predicted the reactions of both his parents to the loss----Dad supporting him right away, and Mom standing back with the look of disgust on her face. I'm sure she loved him just as much, but people handle these things differently. It says a lot about Gable that he overcame this to win the Olympics.

  • @ianshue2890
    @ianshue2890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    While many disagree with me because John Smith was a thing, I still believe that Gable is the best wrestler to come out of America. No wrestler had ever dominated like he did. Gable went unbeaten in high school, and then destroyed everyone college by not only scoring many points against them, but in many of them he would end up pinning his opponents. Gable could easily pin to #2 kid in his weight class, that’s just how dominant he was. Then after that upset loss to Larry Owings, he used the loss to make himself better, and he came back in 71 and 72 and won the world championships and the Olympic Gold Medal with hardly a point scored on him. The world championships no one scored on him, and in the Olympics and Olympic trials themselves Gable out scored his opponents 130-1, ironically the only point against him was from Larry Owings. But whenever he won the Worlds and the Olympics, no one had done it as easily or as dominant as Dan Gable. Dan Gable was a legend on the mat, and his legendary discipline and will power allowed him to destroy his opponents with points, and then Gable would pin them. I don’t think there was any harder worker, or any better wrestler than Dan Gable. In my opinion, Dan Gable is the greatest wrestler to come out of America

      People don't understand wrestling and look it over. Your entire team could take home a gold medal, pinning their way to first place. The front page of your school newspaper is some pussy tossing a ball into a basket. And they'll call him an "athlete."

    • @ianshue2890
      @ianshue2890 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because actual wrestling is the least viewed sport ever. Whenever you say wrestling everyone immediately thinks your talking about WWE. That’s wrastling not wrestling, and that’s one thing I hate, they call it “professional wresting” but there’s nothing professional about it, none of those suckas can even throw a punch, and just about everybody there would get their butt kicked in actual wrestling

      In fact, only one wrestler got choice. Whoever won the coin toss chose top or bottom, and then the positions were switched in the 3rd period.

    Gable said in his book that he focused so much on that big match vs Grant, that afterwords he had a dilemma that now that I beat him what's next. He wasn't as focused on NCAA opponents and Owings just kind of came out of nowhere and Dan sort of took him for granted. Still he almost won the match anyways. Most officials wouldn't have given Owings any back points there

    • @Ruthless-1699
      @Ruthless-1699 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen interviews with Dan where he spoke about Larry Owings dropping 18lb to come down an wrestle him. He said it got in his head along with them having him do an interview about being undefeated before he wrestled Larry an that really F-d with him also. I dont think off guard is right way to describe more like living in Dan's head rent free. Either way the match was exceptional, an so were both wrestlers! GO HAWKS!

    • @Trouble1354
      @Trouble1354 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wrestled numerous times with Pascal Perry as the ref, and as far as I could tell, he was as good a ref as there could be. At the beginning of the match, he would often encourage both of us to wrestle hard and fair. As far as the back points, maybe I'm looking at it from a modern and freestyle POV, but IIRC, even in the olden days, to get two back points, it only had to be momentary, and when you freeze the video, Gable is pretty much on his back. Past 45 degrees, even. But Gable made up for this loss. He's the greatest.

    I still don’t think those near fall points were legit...I know Gable accepted it and as we all know became even better by completely demolishing the field at 72 Olympics...but that was still a quick count...and he did avenge that loss at the Midlands...

    • @patrickmorgan4006
      @patrickmorgan4006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No count required back then. If he was momentarily stopped (a count started) within near fall criteria it was two points. Then the count determined whether it would be two or three.

    Love dan Gable, but I hate the amount of focus and attention the Larry Owings march gets. I don’t think it was a fluke match because Larry was a great wrestler I think if they had wrestled Dan would have

    • @r.m.3655
      @r.m.3655 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrestled 100 times Gable would have won 90+ this was just one of those times he didn’t. He has done more for the sport than anyone else. I what is amazing is he is not overly impressive in physique, speed, muscle, and even looking at his skills does not seem to explosives but more than anything it’s his will and sheer determination to win that makes him so dominate and that’s much hard to teach than a move but some how he found a way

    I purposely lost a match against an opponent because he was wrestling the number one seed the following week. I gave him false confidence and possibly through off his training when he wrestled me in the leagues. I wanted it that bad. Owens let grant win to screw up gable.
