Brilliant stuff Mark. Somehow I missed this when you posted, but it’s great to see the Big Ben getting some love. One of my very favourite blades. Big Ben is the blade that Astra green tries to be. Cheers Mark. Love your enthusiasm
Like how you use the vintage razors. I have gone to using them exclusively. I have several pre war and ‘40s Gillette razors. I get a great shave. I use a Feather or Gillette platinum blade for best results. Enjoyed your shave and commentary.
@@MarkSzorady thanks for the reply. Lord platinum are definitely my razor to beat right now. I’ll post back after I try the asco & Big Ben blades. I tried lord super chrome last night and regretted it lol. Very rough shave for me.
Thank you for the 411 on the Gillette Tech, I have one just like yours that was given to me by my wife, it was her grand fathers razor and she kept it save for a long time. I did not know the year it was made till now. Thank you so much for your great videos.
Good morning Mark. I've been eyeing those blades for a while, but haven't looked at any reviews. I'll definitely have to try some now. That box is what caught my eye. I'm weird about interesting looking boxes/displays. It's nice for me to have things to look at as I shave. Have a great Friday sir.
I’ve seen Big Ben blades become more popular recently. Also there is 2 different packaging for these blades, the blue is 5 blades and the purple is 10 blades.
Hi Mark, Dave from England here again! I have just tried my first Big Ben blade in my Parker Variant razor on setting 3. The shave felt quite coarse but my face wasn't sore after and I got a really good close shave. I tend to do 4 passes these days. 2 with the grain to start with as I seem to miss a lot on the first pass. I hope you are staying safe mate. Best wishes, Dave.
Hi, Dave.:) Four passes? Well, if it works for you, all the better.:) I'm usually using my Parker Variant at setting three and then move down with each successive pass. So glad you got a nice smooth shave with the blade. It does have a little more edge.:)
I have recently found your channel and is one of my favorites. Awesome job! I would recommend an upgrade of the sound if possible. Maybe an external microphone? The video is totally fine!
Thanks, Qualia.:) I agree that the sound has to be tuned a bit. I'm working on it.:) I hve an external mic but still trying to figure out how to rig it up. The house has high, open ceilings, so lots of opportunity for echoes.
@@MarkSzorady You can look for acoustic foam panels on amazon, they start from 30 or even 15 dollars and can be put in specific places. As i know they do not leave marks on the walls if you want to remove them. Hope that helps.
Lol, i have seen these big bens in tje shave shop(never had them), but i was pretty sure thata Big Ben blade would have been made in London haha! When i buy something next month i will try a pack! Normally i have Perma sharp or Voskhod. Great video! My shave for today was. Pre: proraso white. Soap: tobs grapefruit. After: TFS barbose sera. Have a nice weekend!
Nice, smooth blades. I like them almost as much as the Silver Star blades also made by Lord. Both are among my favorites, along with some Treet and Mostochlegmash blades. It might just be my imagination, but I feel like the purple package Big Ben's are sharper than the blues. Might need to try each back to back to confirm.
Hi, Scott Berry. Big Ben is a bit more aggressive than the Lord Platinum. Definitely has an edge. So, generally speaking, to my skin, yes. But this was tamed a bit due to the Tech razor. Even though this Tech is not as mild as later Tech razors, it still held the blades aggression in check for me. The soap is awesome! the pre-soap helped. Both worked well. Absolutely no irritation after this shave. A nice result.:)
Ciao, Massimo!:) Wonderful to her from you.:) The Big Ben razor blades have a bit an edge to them, so to speak. Putting them in the Tech razor increased the aggressiveness just a bit as opposed to, say, an Astra blade.:)
Given that I've only been doing this for less than a year, it may have just been an above-average amount of user error on my part, but the two shaves I've done so far with a Big Ben were back to back massacres. Most nicks and cuts I've had in a while, although the shaves were both fairly close after three passes.
Hi, GlowstickOfDestiny. A couple of quesitons...what razor were you using with the Big Blade? What shave soap? I assume you're doing the proper prep. Please let me know.
Proraso Red shave cream for the lather. The razor is from Viking Revolution's shaving kit, which might have been a mistake to get in hindsight considering I barely ever see the wet shaving community talk about them, but the razor's worked pretty well for me so far (although I say that without another point of reference for DEs). Prep's consisted of rinsing my face with hot water for 45-60 seconds and using aforementioned kit's pre-shave oil if I feel it necessary (which I did on the second of those Big Ben shaves). May be a little light, so maybe I should try it after something more extensive like a minute or two with the hot towel method.
@@glowstickofdestiny1290 I'm not familiar with the razor. Have never tried it. Soap is a good choice. I'd recommend trying the Proraso pre-shave. You can also give PAA's cube a try. See if you can grab a 1950s Tech or a Super Speed. I think those razors would imprive your shave a great deal de to their mild quality (but very efficient). You can find them in pretty good shape for not a lot of money.
Good morning, nice video, thanks 💪, ILOVE nicet blead withe feather popular safety razors good shiving, and I used feather blead withe rockwell T razor in setting no 4 to 3 excellent work, next week iwell use New razor for Boker safety razor whith ASTRA blead I well see
Hi Mark- Great shave; thank you! Great explanation of the various Gillette Tech razors. I’m definitely going to give the Lord Platinum and Big Ben blades a try. I hope you have a great rest of the weekend. Take good care and be safe and be well be well. Best regards, as always, Mark!
Thanks, Mike.:) The Lord Platinums, I think, are a bit smoother than the Big Ben. the Big Ben have more of an "edge" so to speak.:) Both are great. YMMV and pretty much depends on the kind of shave you want.:) Be well.:) Stay safe.:)
Mike, this is how I understand it.:) Although, I seen some post to forums, etc. claiming that there's not much difference and even some say that it's the other way around. My experience is that the pre-war Tech I have is a bit more aggressive than the Ball end.:) YMMV.:)
After watching your last video, I went over to sphinxbeard.com and picked up a puck of their desert shaving soap. I really hope it lives up to the hype and offers good slickness and protection and is made with high quality ingredients. Thanks for the recommendation Mark.
Thanks, Tman2217.:) Seriously, this soap lathers so easily and gave me really nice protection. I used it several times after the very first shave and review.:) I think it has ingredients from the best of both worlds...Tallow soaps and vegan soaps.:)

I can't find a review for Gememe razor blades that come with global shave razors anywhere, have you tried them? Any idea where they are manufactured?

Hi Mark, what blades would you compare Big Ben blades to for sharpness and smoothness?
Big Ben is the blade that Astra tries to be. The same sharpness, but Big Ben are much smoother for me
Hey Mark good to see you again.
Hope all is well.

Would you say the big ben is more of mild or aggressive blade? Does the soap do a good job of preventing irritation?
