If you want to know more about why Henson moved to RK blades, listen to the Lather Talk podcast. Season 3 episode 8. It's an interview with Daniel Jantzi, CEO and founder of Henson Shaving. Start at 58 minutes into the show which is where that conversation begins. Very interesting 🙌🏽👍🏽
I received my Henson AL13 last week and bought the stand so got the blades for free RK blades and couldn’t be happier my first DE razor 🪒 and it’s perfect I am going to buy them for my family at Christmas 🎅 this year.
Just ordered a mild Henson. Brand new to DE shaving. Like one week. I started with a Viking Crusader Ragnaar and maybe I don’t have a clue but it chewed my face up pretty good on the lightest setting 1. E shall see.
I have a Henson safety razor. No complaints about the Henson. However, It came with RK blades. I’ve use about 30 blades so far. I’ll be lucky to get ONE “good” shave out of these blades. The 2nd use results in pulling and tugging and sometimes the blade just rides over the stubble forcing a disposal and reload with a new blade for ONE more good shave.
There was an interview with the CEO of Henson. The rk blades were designed to fit perfectly all of the time within the razor and that is why they switched
been using my Henson since February of this year. I used the RK blades that came with them...they were "ok." I have used Shark Super Chrome ever since and I find they work great for me. No need to switch to anything else at this time for me.
Geo💈🪒 Another great shave and review. The Henson seems to do the job no sweat, swapping the included blades to the RK brand may be marketing or future proofing in case Russian blades are banned or not available down the road..who knows. In any case, the blades seem to work good as well, didn't hear any complaints from you. Would like to know how they'll work in other razors(hint), being made specifically for the Henson. Liking the new handle on the XL brush, will definitely fit my rather large paws much better. Take care, see you next time. Enjoy!
After your video on the Henson both my wife and I got our own. We love them. A better comparison video might've been to shave half with an Astra and half with the other so you could compare the results.
I got the Henson mild razor. First time with a DE razor coming from mach 3 Fusion. After 3 shaves (I shave once every 2 weeks and have coarse hair), I found I had to take many more swipes and had to add and remove cream 3 times with some touch ups at the end with my glasses on. Any suggestions for me? Should I try new blades or try the Henson medium? I thought the perk of DE shaving was less irritation but I had more. Maybe bc the Henson doesn't have the moisturizing strip to keep it smooth after first swipes.
Angle and pressure. Make sure you are using good blades. Try a blade pack and see which ones you like. Shaving is a light touch with the proper angle. Stretch the skin in certain areas if you need to. I have used the Edwin Jagger De89, for years... and I hardly ever get irritation anywhere and cuts are rare. It's a Mild Razor, so I couple it with the Sharpest Blade you can buy. The Feather blades. It's a match made in heaven. The combination works well for me. Prep the face well with a good cream or pre shave. Also because your hair is coarse, you might want to look at something like Merkur 37c Slant. The Slant Razors are ideal for people with coarse hair.
@@nthdegree1269 I've only used the RK blades that come with henson. I have to go over it again and again with a decent amount of pressure. So, surprisingly, the mach 3 fusion cartridge blades seems more efficient. I did just order a variety pack of blades including feather, astra, persona and more. I'll see if that makes a diff. otherwise I might try the henson al13 medium or maybe another razor like you mentioned. Henson is expensive.
@dsha2006 A lot of people complained about the Henson because it's extremely precise... the razor won't cut if it's not at that precise angle, and you have to go over the spot numerous times. Which is a good thing for people who are new to this sort of shaving because it helps them get their angle and technique down..The Shaving Channel "Ohio shaves" talks about that. You can check out his videos with the Henson. If it's not the angle, definitely get different blades. Double-edged blades are much sharper than the multi cartridge shavers.
@@nthdegree1269 Thanks. Well at least in my experience so far, the DE blade that came with the Henson (RK) did not seem sharper than my mach 3 fusion blades. but maybe they angle was not good like ur said. but I don't think that was it.
Geo, thanks for your instructional videos, you’re one of my favorite content creators. My basic Henson is too mild for my heavy beard. The RK razors are almost dull to me, they came with the razor. Painful to use, very surprised given the attention to detail and quality of Henson. I love it when you clear the runways. 😝
Used to use Astra and GSB but now switched to Personna Lab Blue as this is made in USA. Henson is good safety razor in using and I like it and been in my razor rotations.
Just got my Henson a month ago and it came with the Astra Blades. RK blades were available if you went with the 100 blade package, but I wasn't ready to give up my stockpile of Feathers
To the question about not being able to rinse all the lather out when running water on the razor, your lather may be too dry and pasty. Try adding more water, gradually, to your lather as you work it up.
Hello Geofatboy I love your shaving videos I was going to buy one of these but I just bought a Muhle traditional twist as far as the shave goes with the new Henson safety razor which one do you recommend between the 2 safety razors?
Thank you so much for this review, great video! I had this very question on how good the RK blades were. I do have a question, which case do you recommend for the Henson? I was on your site and it doesn’t specify what case is good for it. Thank you in advance.
Hey Geo, another great shave. But I have a question. Can you use an adjustable razor on a high setting, and still do a third pass as you have shown us?? I haven't tried it yet, but may with my slim adjustable on setting 9. Maybe a thought for a future video. Cheers, and stay safe. Larry
I use Rockwell 6s on plate 6 to shave my head. Granted I've been shaving it for 15 years so I'm comfortable with anything. Anything "gentle" just doesn't cut through my hair
Would love to see geo do a video on colognes and smell goods. The TOBS and proraso shaving cream smell soo good! Makes me wonder what else ive been missing.
I recently got a Henson mild, always used Edwin Jagger before and a long time Astra platinum user. Even with the Henson being so mild I cut the crap out of my neck with the RK blades. A used Astra blade was sharper and smoother
I just used the Astra blade in my Parker 94r and got a super smooth shave, I forgot how good that razor is as I haven’t used it in quite some time. Time to stock up on Astra blades.
So how much do different razors impact how it shaves? Like is the blade brand more important than the razor brand or would it be something like 60/40 the blade and razor or w/e? I was using one brand of razors and it was butchering me. Then I actually got a 2 blade sampler and used a Feather, which is supposedly super sharp and slices people up, yet when I shaved with it it didn't give me as much razor burn as it did with the previous blade. Basically just trying to find out if the razor itself even matters compared to the blade or not
IMO it matters. Some razors are fiddly and not wery well made (my Fatip - the blade has a LOT of play and you have to fiddle with it to get even blade reveal and i don't like that). Muhle R41 will be always agressive. More with a Feather blade than with Derby green but still an agressive razor. Wilkinson sword classic(the black plastic one) will be always mild - but with a Feather blade it'll be a touch more agressive and effective than with a Derby green - but still mild. I'd say it's like 70/30 (razor/blade) maybe even 80/20 if you consider using good blades and not crap ones :D Also everybody is different and has different style of shaving that makes huge difference :) That being said i had some really crappy blades that made the shave super uncomfy and had to throw them away(bad batch maybe?). Some razors I like better than others and when I find razor I like I fine tune it with blades. If i don't like that razor the blades won't save it for me.
Have asked the question on another review of the Henson (with no reply's yet) which at the time had the Astra blades, can you get more that a single good shave with a single blade. Now with the RK's? Looks like both are throwaways after the first or second shave. I'm not a cheapskate but it just seems kind of wasteful to me. Even the throwaways are good for at least a single shave.
With the mild Henson, I get about 4 shaves from an Astra. Shaving about 2 to 3 times a week. I think the Henson is a great razor. I was gifted a Rex Ambassador and continue to use the Astra blade. I have tried a number of different blades in both the Henson and the Ambassador and always come back to the Astras.
Anyone else get that slight pulling/vacuum effect from their Henson razor? Any ideas how to minimise the effect? I've heard others mention it and I'm assuming it's due to the flat cap shape having a lot of surface area touching the skin as opposed to a conventional arc head design
The angle of the razor is much different than most. Imagine a clock, where the 5 o clock hand would be. Thats teh correct angle, much steeper than traditional DE razors. Also I found sharpness to be a factor, for me the Astra blades were not cutting it, literally. I switched over to Feather and Gillette Silver Blue. These two blades seem to perform beautifully in this razor. I alternate back and forth.
I find that the RK blades need to be replaced after 3 shaves max. It starts to tug for me when going against the grain by the 3rd shave and I start to get nicks. So, I am surprised the replacement suggestion is every 5 to 7 shaves. Maybe my hair is thicker so the blade dulls quicker.
My reason for buying the Henson was to get away from woke companies like Gillette who have made it very clear they no longer endorse the slogan “the best a man can get.”
I've been contemplating buying a Henson for awhile, but not sure if I should get the + or ++. I use a Progress on 2-2.5 and 6c on plates 3 & 4 (rarely on 5). What would you suggest?
I shave every day with a a futur and Gillette platinums set to 1.5 or 2.5 after a few days. On setting 1 it is still more aggressive than the Henson medium. I get almost zero irritation from this, in part I believe because of the aggressive blade, profile, and the weight of the razor. I purchased the medium Henson, and it was extremely light and still relatively mild. I feel the Henson medium is a little bit of a compromise, it is not as non-irritating as the mild but also not really aggressive enough for a one pass shave. In the end it winds up not really being that exceptional in either category. I feel that with more time I would get it to work for me but I would personally get the mild if I were to buy it again, it would be less of a compromise and most likely be somewhat kinder to my skin. I find that if I cannot get a one pass shave like I can with an aggressive razor, a very mild razor is better at reducing the irritation of that second pass.At least in that case the mild razor would perform well in one category.
👍👍👍 Great Shave, but RK BLADES are used at barber shops in INDIA and are considered to be of poor quality, I have tried these blades but not for me even tuggy and scratchy on first shave no match to ASTRAs I think the HENSON RAZOR company is trying to save money 😀👍👍
I got 5 RK Chromium blades for free with my $2 Chinese safety razor. Not very good. Gillette Wilkinson Sword made in India are better. Currently trying Astra Green. Not sure yet whether I like these blades.
Hi Geo. My good lady got me a Henson for Christmas (based on your previous review). I was using an Ed Jagger DE89 and a Feather SR kamisori (you read out a comment of mine to this effect a couple years ago). The Henson has gone straight into heavy rotation. The shave is absolutely outstanding. The Henson has a tendency to bend the blade excessively near the edge to provide the right profile. Perhaps RK have allowed for this with these blades. Mine came with Astras BTW as this was before the Russkies were somewhat Persona Non Grata :-D
@@geofatboy our goal was to find a blade that was consistent and performed well and would hold our spec/tolerances at scale. Changing manufacturing countries from Russia to India was not a motivating factor at the time of decision. Now, in hindsight, it appears much smarter than it was at the time. So, IMO we got lucky. We are very thankful for RK. Significant drop in return rates with new blades from 2.2% to 1.4%.
@@DLjantzi Hi! Not sure if this would come up in your notifications, but thought I'd give it a try. I saw one of your interviews and it was amazingly refreshing to see so much honesty and transparency in a company. I would have bought the Henson solely on that. This would be my first time with a DE razor and I was impressed how people were all praises and moving on from well-established brands over to Henson. I explored your website thoroughly and loved the whitepaper published there and really liked why you made the product the way you did. I canceled my order for a competitor product and ordered the Henson AL13 for myself. Looking forward to my first shave with it when it arrives! Good luck Daniel!
I get a smoother shave with the RK, Astra tend to irritate my skin and they where the first blades i used for my first 60 shaves But i can only get 3 or 4 pass out of em and i get rust mark on my cap after 2 days... But for 0,13$ each its alright with me also rust dont come from the cutting edges
The way it's designed, there is less blade protrusion and its design pushes the skin how it needs. I came from a vintage safety razor and thought it was a little mild but this one takes pressure rather than my vintage which uses its own weight for the pressure. Even if you use reasonable pressure the Henson won't cause nicks or cuts.
No. I only do things that have an actual affect on the world. Me buying a box of Russkie steel, or not buying it, will not change a darned thing except make me pout because I like Astras.
I've found RK is a very good/bad blade depending on the razor you're using. Treet blades (pakistani) are very comfortable across the band. Both are competitively priced.
I guess swapping the blades to add their own blade brand to the core of the brand was planned anyway. The virtual signailing departure from the Russian product thus becomes a knock-on effect in terms of marketing.
I appreciate all your videos but If that blade or razor was any good, that amount of buffering and passes would not be necessary. Just because a razor is costly, doesn't mean its any good. Usually its the Marketing, fancy box and etc that drives the price up. I counted 220+ strokes on your first pass- That is insane. To get your BBS shave, it could be near 400 strokes ( I lost count). All this creates serious irritation, blemishes and razor burn. This proves that razor is average at best. I don't care if a razor is made from Aerospace Aluminum or Martian metal..its all BS. I recommend anyone to Get a OC or OC slant with a Quality blade and your done in one pass. Keep it simple!
I’m not hating but you don’t even need to waste $ on a brush, bowl, or shaving soap. All you need is castor oil for pre shave and any generic shaving cream you want it works the same.
I always buy 100count packs of Astra platinum. I recently bought a 100 pack of RK…. Astra all the way. No comparison. I can’t understand why Henson swapped. Anyhow, I’m gonna give the 95 RKs I have left to my father in law. 😂 Kick ass vid as always Geo. Still waiting for the Indestructibowl to return. Come on brother!!!!!!

Another great Geofatboy video.
Did they switch to pull their support from Russia because of the ongoing conflict?
Doubtful, I heard about Hensons blade change before recent events. My guess is it’s a move towards a form of vertical integration.
I get a smoother shave with the RK, Astra tend to irritate my skin and they where the first blades i used for my first 60 shaves
But i can only get 3 or 4 pass out of em and i get rust mark on my cap after 2 days... But for 0,13$ each its alright with me also rust dont come from the cutting edges
i bought the hanson mild but its way too mild for my face i need something more agressive
I thought Astra were just the Russian version of Gillette platinum!
Arko!
Forgot your alum
Mild Henson with Feather blade every 3 days...
I definitely think the RK blades are better. Astras cut up my face, the RKs were smooth.
Blades are subjective...
Hello I'm sorry I'm late but there was a mass amount of russian troops stationed east of the ukranian border prior to the special military operation
Is that where you are? Best reason for being late, or not doing your homework... Be safe out there!
Are folks boycotting Russian DE blades? So many are made there including Gillette.
I am. Went to Feather.
People are retarded, lol. I'll purely buy the Russian blades just out of spite.
No. I only do things that have an actual affect on the world. Me buying a box of Russkie steel, or not buying it, will not change a darned thing except make me pout because I like Astras.
@@BunnySconce and what’s that going to change? If the blades are already in the US, the Russians have already been paid
Time to stockpile Russian blades if they're gonna be hard to come by or find non-russian alternatives.
Yes the RK Is a good blade in the Henson razors I actually like it better than the Astras.
I've found RK is a very good/bad blade depending on the razor you're using. Treet blades (pakistani) are very comfortable across the band. Both are competitively priced.
Hi, which model of Treet blades would you recomend to try out? I'am thinking about getting the carbon steel (the black ones). Thanks :)
@@salogel88 new steel. The white packet ones.
Astra are way way better in my view. And I have the same razor
Thanks for sharing
I love my Russian blades
RK is better than Astra Sp? impossible.
It seems geo is biased here ni intention to defame him may be it's sponsored video
You can tell RK isn't a good blade by the amount of strokes geo does on the same area. Astra SP is one of the best blades around and one of my faves.
I’m not hating but you don’t even need to waste $ on a brush, bowl, or shaving soap. All you need is castor oil for pre shave and any generic shaving cream you want it works the same.
ASTRA Platinum blades are FAR better than RK blades in the Henson razor.
Astra SP works differently on guy’s face, you can’t recommend a blade for any guy.
🇺🇦 OMG! Shaving cream on your fingertips? 😮 Say it ain't so! Please, say it ain't so! 🇺🇦
🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
I always buy 100count packs of Astra platinum. I recently bought a 100 pack of RK…. Astra all the way. No comparison. I can’t understand why Henson swapped. Anyhow, I’m gonna give the 95 RKs I have left to my father in law. 😂
Kick ass vid as always Geo. Still waiting for the Indestructibowl to return. Come on brother!!!!!!
