It's also interesting that Meursault seems to be from N corp's wing. N corp is a ruthlessly authoritarian corp even by the city's standards that manages its backstreets with taboo hunters (Like Vespa from the Distortion Detective), his detachment from societal norms and the people around him is probably going to play around the structure of N Corp's taboos. I think Outis might have been an officer during the smoke wars judging from their bloodied kopis and the smoke and depictions of warfare in the background along with the giant trojan horse made of corpses and Odysseus himself having been a king and commander of men in the Trojan war whose strategies led to the massacre and razing of Troy. It's interesting to see all the hints about the characters' personalities and their possible stories both in PM's universe and in the litterature they are inspired by.
I find it weird that people keep thinking that Taboos and Taboo hunters are exclusive to N Corp. It never specified that. It's implied multiple times that each District has its own Taboo, and then there are Taboo of the City in general
@@Deltabolster Well, actually, I also couldn't find the meaning of 'Ha Yuung(하융)'. But, according to my online dictionary, '하(Ha, 河)' means 'River'. On the other hand, there are some meanings on '융(Yuung, 戎), like weapon, war. But the most used meaning is babarian, like 서융(Seo Yuung, 西戎) meaning the babarians who lived on west side of the China. So, my best guess is that '하융(Ha Yuung, 河戎)' means -'babarians living near the liver' or 'war at the liver'.- Edit1: if 하융(Ha Yuung) is the name of limbus Yi-Sang's weapon, then 하융 would mean 'weapon of river' cuz there won't be any babarians in PM's universe. There's a theory running around atm that all the Limbus people are vaugely connected to the Associations we have atm. the reasons are as follows: 1. A number of the Limbus cast have numbers on their jackets. This is relevant cuz the Associations are numbers and among the ones we know, they match, Faust has the No.2 on her jacket and wields a Zweihander, Hong Lu has the No. 6 on theirs and is using a Guan Dao like some fo the Liu use. and Ryoshu who is theorized to be No. 4 has a katana like the Shi. 2. Even more so than this look at the nationalities of the authors and the languages the Associations use. Yi Sang is based on The Wings which is a Korean book- with Hana being Korean for 1. Faust is No. 2 which is German, like Zwei. Don Quixote is No. 3 and is Spanish- Tres is 3 in Spanish, So on and so forth. All the currently known associations match the Limbus Cast in their position. Even Oufi Association, German-Swiss for 11, matches with Sinclair as the Author of Demian is German-Swiss. People filled in the blanks after Faust came out but put Heathcliff in no. 10 cuz that was what was missing. but it was a bit weird that the tenth Association was English again since Wuthering Heights is a British novel. that meant Seven and Ten association would be English. but with Dante revealed and his Jacket having the No.10 on it the list seems to be this: .) Ah, yeah, I'm aware. Faust's Zweihander was the biggest tell and the Ruina artbook did mention 12 associations. So I did put them in order in the thumbnail. Gregor and Heathcliff have no number and Sinclair got 181, so I put him down for 10 (1+8+1) and placed the other two randomly. Dante being 10 threw that arrangement into trash but he was a big surprise in general

That did leave Gregor and Heathcliff being interchangeable but now Dante fills in the hole. And i maybe reading too much into this but, Heathcliff might now be alluding to the new Association mentioned in the original after credits scene. Since it isn't established yet it could connect to Heathcliff having no jacket at all. But that feels like grasping at straws.

Remember that in the first update of the ending in Library of Ruina there was a afther credits scene in which the Purple tear talked with the representatives of the associations about creating a new organization to deal with the distortion cases, she also told them about the E.G.O technology of lobotomy corp, that scene was removed in other updates, i asume they will add later a 100% completion scene pointing to Limbus company

A thing about Dante's ego being his real name: A common motif in fiction infolving alternate identities and what not is of the 'mask' being the 'real' identity, and vice versa. It's especially common in superhero fiction- consider Rorshach screaming GIVE ME BACK MY FACE when his mask is removed- but shows up here and there elsewhere as well. Maybe something like that is going on here? He's the only character who's 'face' his hidden in the art, so that may be significant.
A little late to the party, but regardless; there's an extremely important Italian playwright and author called Luigi Pirandello, who wrote about masks and their place in social interactions. In the novel "Uno, nessuno e centomila" ( one, no one and one hundred thousand ) the theme was first introduced with the phrase "You'll learn at your expense, that in the long path of life you'll meet many masks and few faces." Another quote from the same novel is: " A reality doesn't exist and hasn't been given to us, we need to create it ourselves if we want to be: and it won't always be one for everyone, for ever, but continuously and infinitely mutable." The mentioned masks are fake, arbitrarily created versions of ourselves that take over in certain social spaces, such as work, family, friends and alone, with the theory behind them being : " Man ( as in human ) accepts the mask he himself put on or through which others tend to identify him." Dunno how it could be related to the character but when I read the comment I immediately thought of this guy, so it'll be interesting to see if there'll be any connections.
You putting EMIYA's theme over Don Quixote made me remember a sick fan design for a Don Quixote Servant who was a Foreigner based around the ideas of being a All Might like super hero in form with 3 different looking NP's. Hey, Thank you for the very detail reviews of the books. For the Yi-sang's part, I guess this is not ha-young(하영) but 하융(ha-yoong) which is the pen name of Yi-sang as an illustrator. (So your explanation is right. it is one of his aliases. Though his real name is 김해경(Kim hae-gyeong: 金海卿), he has various pen names such as Yi-sang(which has many meanings such as strange(異常:이상), utopia(이상: 理想), over(이상: 以上), and etc. in Korean), bi-gu(비구: swallow), bo-san (보산: it has two meaning, one is the respectful expression for king's age, and the other means the part of the temple) and ha-yoong(하융). There is no such a word as 하융(ha yoong) but when interpreting each meaning of the character, it may mean 'weapon as ink' since 하(河: ha) means water which alludes to paint, ink, or such kinda things, and 융(戎: Yoong) means weapon. Yeah, I remember him panicking and hiding the money. Rodion falls under 'the poor' and making the world better falls under the same umbrella as viewing himself as one of the greats. I didn't mean to imply Rodion did it all to have funds for hookers and blow or anything along those lines, but the material disparity between himself and the despicable old money lender felt like it was portrayed as one of the wrongs he saw the need of correcting. Granted, I was 17 when I read the book.
This is a month late but my guess on the first character we get is *the executive manager of the company.* Considering the themes of books, the executive manager could be the first playable character we get that's customizable as they represent the insertion of self: with the logical guess being Dante from Dante's Inferno considering how we're being guided by the equivalent of Virgil and that the managers face is hidden to symbolize the player being inserted into the story

I only found this video now??? What the heck?! Anyways, as someone who is Chinese and trying to get back to my original roots since I'm very detached from it, I'm the most excited about Hong Lu in this video. So my notes here (from the future lol) will be all about Hong Lu as add-ons to your statement. EGO: Hong Lu's base EGO is translated to "Land of Illusion". This has been noted in the original source material (I only found a translation and I might try my best to find the original Chinese version to read), the Land of Illusion is the world where the incarnations of Baoyu, the protagonist, and Daiyu, the deuteragonist, came from. Buddhism: Buddhism is one of the main religions of China alongside a few such as Taoism and Confucianism, hence why there would be Buddhism elements in this. If anyone has read or watched Dream of the Red Chamber and has reached the end, you would know what happened to Baoyu and it is related to Buddhism beliefs. If there's anyone who wish to correct me or add to my notes, go ahead!

I approve of your Chinese! Theres just a stutter and it has been well pronouved rest of the way. As a note for the quote, the translation is correct. 美中不足 is correctly translated, "all is good if not for one thing that is not good" 好事多魔 does have some in's and outs. 魔 meaning demonic, but it also sound the same as 磨, which means grind. There is a saying that the first character was used in place of second one. Depends on which meaning you follow, either " road to happiness (好事) is drenched with demons（多魔）" or "road to happines（好事）s is drenched with trials (and requires grinding, 多磨）" Both of the characters really implies a sense of trials before the happiness, which probably is what its core meaning is. also character is 鸿璐 （Hong Lu）, not the 红楼（Hong Lou）some people expected; since this one seems to draw a reference to Hong Lou Meng (红楼梦, an example of Chinese classic literature), and in Korean the pronunciation is roughly Hong Lu Mong.
@@pomegranate10017 Really depends on who you would read it? wether the “中不足” (not enough in it) portion is an adjective to the "美"(Beauty) or the entire thing "美中不足" is an adjective to something else. In first case, that would and can be "there's not enough in beauty"; but no one AFAIK uses it in this context. The second case is more common, when we talk about something (say an object) is “美中不足” (All is good except for that tiny spec of blemish).

Even back in the bible, True Names have had unknown and somewhat mysterious powers to them and isn't something to be disclosed. Hence why Jacob wrestled with God just to get a new name, because with that name comes many things including blessings. Also to be noted is that Abram also got the new name Abraham, which, along with those names came divine blessings so to speak. What is even more interesting is when Jacob asked of God's name, the answer was practically "You know better than to ask", considering this is in Genesis, yeah, True Names, or names in general, has always held something of value.

Too bad I'm only cultured enough to know the Japanimation and just some of the suffering vidya game music (tho that's not even the cacophonous growing wings original version so lost points there for not subjecting everyone to true pain). The real punchline is starting the video with Dante as an example as a joke then ending it with the real reveal that Limbus Company FEATURES DANTE FROM THE DEVIL MAY C- I mean, FROM 13th CENTURY ITALY
This is rather late, but since there's a lot of your analyses of these characters that mention relation to the self, there is one interesting one I think with Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Though not from Heathcliff, it's About Heathcliff and from his love interest/adoptive sister, Cathy, and is perhaps one of her most famous monologues from the novel. "Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being." Within context, it's from Cathy ranting to the former nanny accompanying her when talking about her plans to marry the Linton heir in order to use the family's title and money to assist Heathcliff, since she and Heathcliff couldn't marry due to his low status within the family and lack of funds. Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship is remarkably codependent and toxic for various reasons, but what Cathy describes is the core of it more or less. Cathy and Heathcliff are two very volatile people who see themselves in each other. And growing up in isolation in many ways, they conflate their own sense of selves with one another. After believing he's lost Cathy to her marriage to the Lintons, Heathcliff goes off the deep end due to feeling thrown away by her, and this self destructive behavior seeking her continues after her death with the famous scene of him digging up her grave and later wanting to he buried with her. And in the text, it's also implied that the reason Cathy died after childbirth was because Heathcliff leaving and eventually marrying another woman threw her into such raving hysterics it became a major detriment to her health.
Dante Looks more like a destortion which seems cool because that means there are distortions who still hold onto humanity and want to help people unlike in library of ruina they all just seemed to be evil or choatic at best only looking for ways to hurt others or rule above them. That or just lash out randomly with out cause just because they can
I feel like Ishmael was previously known as Bebe from Wonderlab. Im not sure if it has anything to do with, but the part where she was the one to live and tell the tales kinda eludes to how she and couple of employees survived the downfall of Wonderlab Branch of L Corp 🤔

It's a banger! Yi Sang is kinda as-expected. I love that Mephistopheles is the name of the engine. DQ treating Fixers as noble knights is hilarious. Ryoushu treats fighting like an art, makes sense. Meursault is on point. Hong Lu being a sheltered kid also tracks with the original story. Heathcliff is an angry binch, good. Ishmael doesn't stand out but is reliable, fitting the book counterpart. Rodion focusing this much on materialism feels weird, but we'll see where it goes. Sinclair is a good boy with a killer glare, duality, good. Outis is a strategist, just like Odysseus was the smart guy of the crew. And more secrecy, oo. Gregor transforming if you're rude to him is kinda adorable ngl.
Right as i heard madoka magica music my heart rate went up i love madoka magica and i watched around the time i started to play limbus so my memories for both are intertwined
Something to add on about Gregor, he's also a case of "lack of self". In the story, he's basically nothing, constructing his own identity entirely based on the thought and opinions of others. Even his entire transformation seems to be that concept, as the descriptions about what he can and can't do in his vermin form are inconsistent, based on what has recently happened. At first he can't move at all, but as soon as someone from work comes over to see why he's late, he suddenly can move far more easily, even if it's still a struggle. He can speak and communicate, up until his family stops trying to speak with him and begin treating him like an insect where he loses the ability entirely. Later in the story when his father attempts to kill him, suddenly his father's heel grows massively, or rather, Gregor shrinks. It all paints the picture that while this transformation was a cruel twist of fate for Gregor, Gregor's refusal to do anything about it and just accepted thr idea of "he was what others said he was" is what stopped it from getting better. When I read the story myself, yeah I felt really bad for Gregor, this transformation fucking sucked. But at thr same time he reeeeeaaaally wasn't doing anything to make me feel sympathic either. He just wallowed in his own self-pity, and by the time he finally "grew a spine" and tried to assert what he wanted on others instead of just being passive, he was so stuck in the past that everyone moved on around him. When he realized that, that he was perpetuating his own suffering yet by the time he finally decided to put in the work to change things it was far too late, that was when he begins to act in a way he'd all agree is full depression. He stops doing much of anything, stops eating or sleeping, and just sits there, wasting away until one day th servant girl stumbles across his dead body. It's definitely a metaphor for depression, but I think a lot of people overlook how Gregor isn't actually a sympathic character, he is a pitable one. His situation sucks, and you'd hate to be in his situation, but he is so passive and reactive of a character that by the end, it's honestly hard not to sympathize with the sister's feelings on thr situation better than you do for Gregor's. Of course a direct translation of that passivity into Limbus Gregor would make for a bad character, so no wonder he was changed(HA). I really like bug man, I can't wait to see more of him in future story chapters.
I also talked with some disabled people who felt very much like Gregor due to their illness taking their agency away from them, partially or fully. I can sorta understand him, because if you're done with everything, it can be really hard to even think of crawling out of that. But Kafka was not one to provide solutions to screwed up situations, just describing them.
@@LastMinuteEssays I suppose that is one of the big aspects of Kafka's works, how many radically different perspectives can be taken on them due to the way he wrote. For me at least, I felt the message was delivered through the parallel drawn between Gregor, and his sister Greta. Like I mentioned, Gregor was a very passive person, largely allowing his own life to be controlled and defined by those around him. His family needed money, so he worked his ass off for them despite how cruel his father was towards him, he had this job, so he obeyed his boss' orders like a faithful pet. He did have admirable qualities to him, like how he was secretly saving up to send his sister to a musical college soon, or how despite how horrible his life seemed, he kept getting back up and dealing with it no matter what. But those were still fairly passive qualities, as what he was doing was always in reaction to what someone else did or said. The only thing he ever really did "for himself" was keeping a small photo of a woman he liked. Greta on the other hand was almost the exact opposite. She was still young at the start, so her not having a job wasn't strictly "bad". But once Gregor transformed, she fairly quickly went out and found one. She also was the first person to actively reach out to Gregor, try to understand him based on how he was eating his food, and despite being a "frail young lady", worked to rearrange Gregor's room when he started to crawl around more. The book even ends with the father praising Greta on what a fine woman she's grown up to become. Over the course of the book, the two are regularly shown that, Greta acts, Gregor re-acts. Which of course in the real world, depression, regardless of it's major cause, isn't something that can just be solved by telling someone to "Get out there and get 'em champ". But I think it's shown off well in how Greta acts in the first half of the story. She actively reaches out to Gregor, at least once she gets used to him, and tries to interact with him, bring him meals and figure out what he enjoys doing. Gregor however shies away from her, assuming very early on that "she must be disgusted with me like this", so he hides from her, refusing to interact more than the bare minimum. That gradually causes Greta to stop feeling like she's interacting with the brother she once knew and grow to be disgusted with him, and so Gregor's refusal to "take her hand" because he thinks she hates him, ironically ends up making her actually start hating him. Towards the end of the book, when the 3 rich prats start renting out an apartment, they hear Greta playing the Violin and ask her to play some more. Gregor also hears it, and leads him to "act" for one of the few times in the story that he does, going out to Greta. He has a number of "Good" thoughts that anyone would praise, like how wonderful and skilled his sister is, how he really wants to let her know about the money he had been saving up to send her to college, and how he wishes to help her become even better at her skills. But he also has a number of "bad" ones as well, mainly that he wants to bring her back to his room so he can have her forever and never let her go, and that despite over a year passing, he's entirely unable to see how much Greta has changed and grown as a person, still fully assuming that she's the same "innocent girl who loves the Violin" and not considering that she may no longer want to pursue that as a field of study. Somewhat ironically, despite how well he adapted to his metamorphosis and new preferences as a bug, he wasn't able to really "move on" either as an individual. Gregor was still living in the past, he just happened to eat very different foods and find pleasure(or not) in very different things, but Greta had largely moved on. Their mother and father stayed very similar, though they had changed slightly as the mother became more protective of Gregor while the Father became even more cold and cruel. But Greta attempted to reach out to him, and when he didn't respond time after time, she decided to just move on, and that it wasn't worth "building her half of the bridge when he refused to build his" so to speak. To me, it felt like the message being told was this. Sometimes shit sucks really badly, and it gets depressing. In those moments, don't dismiss your friends or loved ones when they try to help, they are worried about you and want to help you get better, even if it may take a long time to do so. However don't expect them to always be there unconditionally, rejecting them enough times can, and will, burn the bridge. Depression sucks, and "hard work" can't entirely solve depression, but passively waiting for someone else to fix your depression won't do anything either. You need to put in some amount of effort eventually, otherwise you can only blame yourself when your friends and loved ones give up on you. Or perhaps that's just my own biases showing through, as I had exactly that kind of relationship with a family member so perhaps I just read into the story in that manner. A family member was struggling, I reached out to them again and again, and each time they ignored me. So now, I don't bother holding out my hand and hoping they'll take it since it just isn't worth the effort. If They reach out, I'll respond and help, but I've long since learned that "building my half of the bridge" will just end in nothing, so wait for them to start working on their half, then I'll get to work myself.

roskolnikov’s surname isnt only about splitting like an axe does but also about splitting from the orthodox church, dostoyevsky’s literature had alot of religious theming and symbolism and crime and punishment has a lot of those. The name Rodion sounds like “Rodina” which means homeland, basically im pretty sure his name means that he has split from his homeland and alienated himself from others (and his own mind)

It's also interesting that Meursault seems to be from N corp's wing. N corp is a ruthlessly authoritarian corp even by the city's standards that manages its backstreets with taboo hunters (Like Vespa from the Distortion Detective), his detachment from societal norms and the people around him is probably going to play around the structure of N Corp's taboos.
I think Outis might have been an officer during the smoke wars judging from their bloodied kopis and the smoke and depictions of warfare in the background along with the giant trojan horse made of corpses and Odysseus himself having been a king and commander of men in the Trojan war whose strategies led to the massacre and razing of Troy.
It's interesting to see all the hints about the characters' personalities and their possible stories both in PM's universe and in the litterature they are inspired by.

There's a theory running around atm that all the Limbus people are vaugely connected to the Associations we have atm. the reasons are as follows:
1. A number of the Limbus cast have numbers on their jackets. This is relevant cuz the Associations are numbers and among the ones we know, they match, Faust has the No.2 on her jacket and wields a Zweihander, Hong Lu has the No. 6 on theirs and is using a Guan Dao like some fo the Liu use. and Ryoshu who is theorized to be No. 4 has a katana like the Shi.
2. Even more so than this look at the nationalities of the authors and the languages the Associations use. Yi Sang is based on The Wings which is a Korean book- with Hana being Korean for 1. Faust is No. 2 which is German, like Zwei. Don Quixote is No. 3 and is Spanish- Tres is 3 in Spanish, So on and so forth. All the currently known associations match the Limbus Cast in their position. Even Oufi Association, German-Swiss for 11, matches with Sinclair as the Author of Demian is German-Swiss.
People filled in the blanks after Faust came out but put Heathcliff in no. 10 cuz that was what was missing. but it was a bit weird that the tenth Association was English again since Wuthering Heights is a British novel. that meant Seven and Ten association would be English. but with Dante revealed and his Jacket having the No.10 on it the list seems to be this:

Gregor and Heathcliff have no number and Sinclair got 181, so I put him down for 10 (1+8+1) and placed the other two randomly. Dante being 10 threw that arrangement into trash but he was a big surprise in general

And i maybe reading too much into this but, Heathcliff might now be alluding to the new Association mentioned in the original after credits scene. Since it isn't established yet it could connect to Heathcliff having no jacket at all. But that feels like grasping at straws.

A thing about Dante's ego being his real name: A common motif in fiction infolving alternate identities and what not is of the 'mask' being the 'real' identity, and vice versa. It's especially common in superhero fiction- consider Rorshach screaming GIVE ME BACK MY FACE when his mask is removed- but shows up here and there elsewhere as well. Maybe something like that is going on here? He's the only character who's 'face' his hidden in the art, so that may be significant.

there's an extremely important Italian playwright and author called Luigi Pirandello, who wrote about masks and their place in social interactions.
In the novel "Uno, nessuno e centomila" ( one, no one and one hundred thousand ) the theme was first introduced with the phrase "You'll learn at your expense, that in the long path of life you'll meet many masks and few faces."
Another quote from the same novel is: " A reality doesn't exist and hasn't been given to us, we need to create it ourselves if we want to be: and it won't always be one for everyone, for ever, but continuously and infinitely mutable."
The mentioned masks are fake, arbitrarily created versions of ourselves that take over in certain social spaces, such as work, family, friends and alone, with the theory behind them being : " Man ( as in human ) accepts the mask he himself put on or through which others tend to identify him."
Dunno how it could be related to the character but when I read the comment I immediately thought of this guy, so it'll be interesting to see if there'll be any connections.

(So your explanation is right. it is one of his aliases. Though his real name is 김해경(Kim hae-gyeong: 金海卿), he has various pen names such as Yi-sang(which has many meanings such as strange(異常:이상), utopia(이상: 理想), over(이상: 以上), and etc. in Korean), bi-gu(비구: swallow), bo-san (보산: it has two meaning, one is the respectful expression for king's age, and the other means the part of the temple) and ha-yoong(하융). There is no such a word as 하융(ha yoong) but when interpreting each meaning of the character, it may mean 'weapon as ink' since 하(河: ha) means water which alludes to paint, ink, or such kinda things, and 융(戎: Yoong) means weapon. Yeah, I remember him panicking and hiding the money. Rodion falls under 'the poor' and making the world better falls under the same umbrella as viewing himself as one of the greats. I didn't mean to imply Rodion did it all to have funds for hookers and blow or anything along those lines, but the material disparity between himself and the despicable old money lender felt like it was portrayed as one of the wrongs he saw the need of correcting.

This is a month late but my guess on the first character we get is *the executive manager of the company.* Considering the themes of books, the executive manager could be the first playable character we get that's customizable as they represent the insertion of self: with the logical guess being Dante from Dante's Inferno considering how we're being guided by the equivalent of Virgil and that the managers face is hidden to symbolize the player being inserted into the story

Depends on which meaning you follow, either " road to happiness (好事) is drenched with demons（多魔）" or "road to happines（好事）s is drenched with trials (and requires grinding, 多磨）"
Both of the characters really implies a sense of trials before the happiness, which probably is what its core meaning is.

In first case, that would and can be "there's not enough in beauty"; but no one AFAIK uses it in this context.
The second case is more common, when we talk about something (say an object) is “美中不足” (All is good except for that tiny spec of blemish).

This is rather late, but since there's a lot of your analyses of these characters that mention relation to the self, there is one interesting one I think with Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Though not from Heathcliff, it's About Heathcliff and from his love interest/adoptive sister, Cathy, and is perhaps one of her most famous monologues from the novel.
"Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being."
Within context, it's from Cathy ranting to the former nanny accompanying her when talking about her plans to marry the Linton heir in order to use the family's title and money to assist Heathcliff, since she and Heathcliff couldn't marry due to his low status within the family and lack of funds. Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship is remarkably codependent and toxic for various reasons, but what Cathy describes is the core of it more or less.
Cathy and Heathcliff are two very volatile people who see themselves in each other. And growing up in isolation in many ways, they conflate their own sense of selves with one another. After believing he's lost Cathy to her marriage to the Lintons, Heathcliff goes off the deep end due to feeling thrown away by her, and this self destructive behavior seeking her continues after her death with the famous scene of him digging up her grave and later wanting to he buried with her. And in the text, it's also implied that the reason Cathy died after childbirth was because Heathcliff leaving and eventually marrying another woman threw her into such raving hysterics it became a major detriment to her health.

Something to add on about Gregor, he's also a case of "lack of self". In the story, he's basically nothing, constructing his own identity entirely based on the thought and opinions of others. Even his entire transformation seems to be that concept, as the descriptions about what he can and can't do in his vermin form are inconsistent, based on what has recently happened.
At first he can't move at all, but as soon as someone from work comes over to see why he's late, he suddenly can move far more easily, even if it's still a struggle. He can speak and communicate, up until his family stops trying to speak with him and begin treating him like an insect where he loses the ability entirely. Later in the story when his father attempts to kill him, suddenly his father's heel grows massively, or rather, Gregor shrinks.
It all paints the picture that while this transformation was a cruel twist of fate for Gregor, Gregor's refusal to do anything about it and just accepted thr idea of "he was what others said he was" is what stopped it from getting better.
When I read the story myself, yeah I felt really bad for Gregor, this transformation fucking sucked. But at thr same time he reeeeeaaaally wasn't doing anything to make me feel sympathic either. He just wallowed in his own self-pity, and by the time he finally "grew a spine" and tried to assert what he wanted on others instead of just being passive, he was so stuck in the past that everyone moved on around him. When he realized that, that he was perpetuating his own suffering yet by the time he finally decided to put in the work to change things it was far too late, that was when he begins to act in a way he'd all agree is full depression. He stops doing much of anything, stops eating or sleeping, and just sits there, wasting away until one day th servant girl stumbles across his dead body.
It's definitely a metaphor for depression, but I think a lot of people overlook how Gregor isn't actually a sympathic character, he is a pitable one. His situation sucks, and you'd hate to be in his situation, but he is so passive and reactive of a character that by the end, it's honestly hard not to sympathize with the sister's feelings on thr situation better than you do for Gregor's.
Of course a direct translation of that passivity into Limbus Gregor would make for a bad character, so no wonder he was changed(HA). I really like bug man, I can't wait to see more of him in future story chapters.
I also talked with some disabled people who felt very much like Gregor due to their illness taking their agency away from them, partially or fully. I can sorta understand him, because if you're done with everything, it can be really hard to even think of crawling out of that.
But Kafka was not one to provide solutions to screwed up situations, just describing them.

For me at least, I felt the message was delivered through the parallel drawn between Gregor, and his sister Greta. Like I mentioned, Gregor was a very passive person, largely allowing his own life to be controlled and defined by those around him. His family needed money, so he worked his ass off for them despite how cruel his father was towards him, he had this job, so he obeyed his boss' orders like a faithful pet. He did have admirable qualities to him, like how he was secretly saving up to send his sister to a musical college soon, or how despite how horrible his life seemed, he kept getting back up and dealing with it no matter what. But those were still fairly passive qualities, as what he was doing was always in reaction to what someone else did or said. The only thing he ever really did "for himself" was keeping a small photo of a woman he liked.
Greta on the other hand was almost the exact opposite. She was still young at the start, so her not having a job wasn't strictly "bad". But once Gregor transformed, she fairly quickly went out and found one. She also was the first person to actively reach out to Gregor, try to understand him based on how he was eating his food, and despite being a "frail young lady", worked to rearrange Gregor's room when he started to crawl around more. The book even ends with the father praising Greta on what a fine woman she's grown up to become.
Over the course of the book, the two are regularly shown that, Greta acts, Gregor re-acts.
Which of course in the real world, depression, regardless of it's major cause, isn't something that can just be solved by telling someone to "Get out there and get 'em champ". But I think it's shown off well in how Greta acts in the first half of the story. She actively reaches out to Gregor, at least once she gets used to him, and tries to interact with him, bring him meals and figure out what he enjoys doing. Gregor however shies away from her, assuming very early on that "she must be disgusted with me like this", so he hides from her, refusing to interact more than the bare minimum. That gradually causes Greta to stop feeling like she's interacting with the brother she once knew and grow to be disgusted with him, and so Gregor's refusal to "take her hand" because he thinks she hates him, ironically ends up making her actually start hating him.
Towards the end of the book, when the 3 rich prats start renting out an apartment, they hear Greta playing the Violin and ask her to play some more. Gregor also hears it, and leads him to "act" for one of the few times in the story that he does, going out to Greta. He has a number of "Good" thoughts that anyone would praise, like how wonderful and skilled his sister is, how he really wants to let her know about the money he had been saving up to send her to college, and how he wishes to help her become even better at her skills. But he also has a number of "bad" ones as well, mainly that he wants to bring her back to his room so he can have her forever and never let her go, and that despite over a year passing, he's entirely unable to see how much Greta has changed and grown as a person, still fully assuming that she's the same "innocent girl who loves the Violin" and not considering that she may no longer want to pursue that as a field of study.
Somewhat ironically, despite how well he adapted to his metamorphosis and new preferences as a bug, he wasn't able to really "move on" either as an individual. Gregor was still living in the past, he just happened to eat very different foods and find pleasure(or not) in very different things, but Greta had largely moved on. Their mother and father stayed very similar, though they had changed slightly as the mother became more protective of Gregor while the Father became even more cold and cruel. But Greta attempted to reach out to him, and when he didn't respond time after time, she decided to just move on, and that it wasn't worth "building her half of the bridge when he refused to build his" so to speak.
To me, it felt like the message being told was this. Sometimes shit sucks really badly, and it gets depressing. In those moments, don't dismiss your friends or loved ones when they try to help, they are worried about you and want to help you get better, even if it may take a long time to do so. However don't expect them to always be there unconditionally, rejecting them enough times can, and will, burn the bridge. Depression sucks, and "hard work" can't entirely solve depression, but passively waiting for someone else to fix your depression won't do anything either. You need to put in some amount of effort eventually, otherwise you can only blame yourself when your friends and loved ones give up on you.
Or perhaps that's just my own biases showing through, as I had exactly that kind of relationship with a family member so perhaps I just read into the story in that manner. A family member was struggling, I reached out to them again and again, and each time they ignored me. So now, I don't bother holding out my hand and hoping they'll take it since it just isn't worth the effort. If They reach out, I'll respond and help, but I've long since learned that "building my half of the bridge" will just end in nothing, so wait for them to start working on their half, then I'll get to work myself.

Camus is such a pillar of modern French literature his philosophy of absurdism changed my life, I love love love it ! Interestingly, we have a very multilingual team. It has English, Russian, German, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, French, and even Combodian (or whatever language it is)
And I’ll say how Russian I’m wondering why the Koreans called Rodion a male name, when Radion in the game is she. Project Moon has a problem with Slavic names in principle. For example, in the library of ruins there is a character named Nikolai and this is her. However, Nikolai is a male name.
I think it's fair to say at this point that gender norms regarding names don't exist in the City. Limbus gives us a woman named Hermann, for example

The name Rodion sounds like “Rodina” which means homeland, basically im pretty sure his name means that he has split from his homeland and alienated himself from others (and his own mind)
