    Thank you Clay for making this video. I have been struggling to figure out why my 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7L was overheating after installing a new thermostat and following the air bleed steps. Your section on the proper clocking of the thermostat made all the difference! Why no one else makes this clear is beyond me! Thanks, again.

    I wish you were closer so you can fix my car. My mechanic here got his ego hurt because I told him about your video. I’ve been having the same issue & I keep spending on new thermostats because I believe their not being installed properly. I believe my problem with the thermostat has caused other problems. I’ve had to replace the coolant reservoir twice. I’ve had to replace the radiator because it cracked. I’ve had to replace the water pump, etc.. Honestly my intention was not to hurt his ego. I firmly believe that if a person is humble enough they will accept that no matter how experienced they may be there’s always room for improvement, for learning something new. I like that you accepted that you messed up by not getting it. You did not allow your ego to get in the way & you even let the world know. By teaching you are growing too. Thank you for the video. I flushed my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, 4.7 motor. I added the flush chemical, ran around for 3 days (As per instructions) Then I drained the radiator, filled it with distilled water, ran it for 10 minutes, drained that and did that two more times. (Three flushes total) So, on the fourth time I filled it with coolant. As I watched the burp valve (8mm set screw) it just kept steaming. Water/coolant never came out, just steam. So, I let it run and would add a tiny bit of coolant as needed. I also kept an eye on the temp gauge and noticed it climbing past the 180 mark where it usually rides, past the 210 mark, and beyond that. So Before that got out of hand, I shut it off. Now, when it runs without the radiator cap, it just spews coolant out like "Old Faithful" and nothing but steam comes from the burp valve. What is going on? I'm going to change the thermostat and see if that's it, because it's the cheapest, most straightforward test I can come up with. Any ideas?

    If you have trouble removing the 8mm plug ; tighten if first . For some reason pipe threads bind up and by tightening until it moves ,unbinds it then you can remove it or loosen it to blead the air out . You can do this to all pipe threads .

    • @Mickeyss54
      @Mickeyss54 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or if you're going to do this project, Loosen the plug while the engine is hot the night before because the heat will usually help during expansion and contraction. I had to burp my 5.7L Hemi and even with the front end jacked up it was a slow pain in the ass process taking turns squeezing both radiator hoses before I got it burped enough.

    What happen to me was my Jeep 5.7 Cherokee was overheating temp so when it did that I stopped the truck and started it back up and the overheating issues would stop for about 15 min of draving. So now I was getting my powersteering pump replaced and the mechanic said u need a new battery. So I got all I needed and in stalled. So here we are and my truck is good. No overheating issues so far. But took ot for a 40 min run and so far so good. Also I put a 180 thermostat on my jeep and yes it ran cooler. But my miles per gallon went very low. So I bought a 203. And still no overheating and my miles per gallon are going up.

    I have a Jeep Liberty 3.7. Bought it off some dummy who didn't tell me it had an overheating issue. It idles forever just fine, I can drive it maybe 8 - 10 miles then it starts overheating past the mid point on the gauge and will keep going until boiling over. Replaced water pump, thermostat, temp sensor, havent changed radiator yet. No head gasket symptoms that I can see.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that’s the terrible thing about these blocks is they have small hairline cracks in them sometimes and they don’t show the indications of a head gasket but I do recommend the procedure that I tell you at the end of the video when I talk about drilling some holes in the thermostat I have seen them get another six months or a year out of them after doing that it allows the pressure not to build up on the inside of the engine the same way

    • @HardPumpers
      @HardPumpers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sharpcarco it's just odd I can drive it for 10 miles maybe before it starts overheating. Honestly I haven't pursued the issue further because it's fine for my work commute and most local runs. Im gonna maybe swap out the radiator at some point just haven't been bothered yet. I had a Dodge Neon did the same thing. Could drive it for maybe 15 miles or so before it started getting hot.

  • @octopustetro

    Hi Clay, thanks for the video. I am preparing to change my thermostat. The problem with mine is that it is fine until im driving on the freeway. Going past about 60 mph the temperature will rise at a decent pace to too hot. If I pull over and idle the engine, it cools down right away. Im pretty sure it might be the thermos getting stuck, but if this doesn’t resolve my issue what would you think?

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s an interesting problem.
      I would have to guess possible airflow through your radiator could be a potential reason for that…
      Is your air-conditioning running during this problem?
      Is the temperature extremely high outside in your area?
      These are just some of the thoughts that I have I would recommend taking it to one of the self cleaners if you don’t have a power washer at home and trying to blow out the dirt between the radiator and the condenser.
      Then we’re just some thoughts off the top of my head

    I think if you drill holes in the thermostat will be more coolant flow that could be bad for the system cause the antifreeze will take more time cool down and the fan will be working overtime and antifreeze will be burned out more quickly.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do believe I covered that pretty well it was definitely the very last thing I said as a very last resort. If you were having to do that because you’re having an overheating problem more than likely you’re getting combustion gases inside the cooling system…

      @@sharpcarco I got another issues besides the overheating in my 2004 jeep liberty 3.7L is I have to invent a cabin filter cause the humidity is getting in my ac system and my evaporator is getting corrosion.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that’s common that’s called electroless is it happens on aluminum products that’s just a problem overtime. And how your air conditioning system works it literally sucks the humidity out of the atmosphere inside the cabin. And that humidity is then collected on the condenser itself. Technically speaking it’s designed to do that

      Tim you’re probably just low on coolant.
      If you’re able to bring the temperature down by turning on the heater when The engine is cold before you start it up in the morning time I had some coolant to it

    • @sharpcarco

      Hey Joe sorry to hear about that brother would have to assume that you have a bad head gasket….. you could try some fiber lock head gasket repair in there if it’s only overheating above an idle that might be help. Do the procedure exactly how the instructions say.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would I do that? There’s no such thing as a ECT sending unit on this vehicle.
      The temperature sensor is a potentiometer style switch it regulates voltage sent to the Ecm which interprets the voltage into the temperature of the engine it’s a very simple circuit really nothing to mention about it

    Hi Clay, Great Video, thanks! I just pulled my thermostat on my 2003 Liberty, and yes the vent was down near the bottom, but it was notched correctly in the housing.... Any thoughts??

    • @petebethke1738
      @petebethke1738 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Clay, answered my own question. The friendly neighborhood mechanic who put it in, put it in backwards, aka spring side to the hose, which also puts the vent on the bottom. He then went on to tell us, since that didn't fix it, it was a head gasket, which thank goodness it's not.
      Keep up the good work! Pete

    I have a 2005 Jeep liberty and it has two fans. It only overheats when I run the AC. What could the problem be?

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the first thing that I would check in that situation is your radiator take your vehicle to one of the self-serve car washes and use the high pressure wash to blow out the radiator and the condenser more than likely you got dust and dirt buildup in between them and it’s not allowing your engine to cool properly.
      Make sure both of your fans are coming on when your air conditioner is turned on…..

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really sorry can’t tell you for certain why yours is overheating very quickly it’s possible that you have a bad head gasket if it’s overheating very fast that means that combustion more than likely is going inside your cooling system and causing it to overheat quickly.
