  • Come along wit Eric O at SMA and let's have a look at this 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee that tends to run a fever if it is left sitting. Not only do we diagnose a bad fan assembly but we get to play around with the Bosch VCI module and check out some of the bidirectional functions of it.
    Interested in stuff seen in the videos or the tools and toys Eric O. likes and uses? Check out the S.M.A. "A-Store" and help support the channel! : astore.amazon.com/httpswwwy083...
    If an SMA Video has helped you out please consider giving using the "support" link on our TH-cam home page. The videos take real time to create and pull us away from real work that pays our bills.
    THANKS!

      @@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 I keep cars 15 to 20 years. They always get junked because of rust. (all Fords) The most I've ever had to replace other than consumables are a few tie rod ends and a couple of wheel bearings. The ONLY engine issues I've ever had on any of them has been a thermostat and an idle solenoid. That's across about 5 vehicles bought new. My current car is a 2007 Fusion 4cyl with a stick shift. One tie rod end, one rear wheel bearing, 205,000 miles. Definitely FAR from having to fix "everything"
      A friend just took her Wrangler in to figure out why the steering was so bad - basically the ENTIRE front suspension and steering gear was shot, two ball joints, all the tie rod ends, bunch of bushings, etc, needed like $3000 in parts and labor. At 135K miles. It's never been off-road. I'm not inclined to ever buy a Jeep.

    Thank you SMA! Just got done replacing the non working fan in my 07 Commander. I only do short trips so I never noticed my overheating issue. Bet the fan was inoperative for months! The AC is now uncomfortably cold and I've been idling in the driveway for >30 min now with the temp gauge reading less than half scale, rock steady. All the best from Pittsburgh!

    Nice job!!! Got the cooling fan blues on my sister's 2000 Impala 3.8...Seized up popped a fuse, and triggered the circuit malfunction code. Seeing you do this jeep reminded me that I have to remove the upper radiator hose as well 😞 I tried squeezing it around the hose and damaged the coolant level sensor! When I get the new one I'm going to drain the coolant maybe I can find one of those fluid extractors since there's no drain.

    I fixed a car with same issues but it was the radiator cap that was bad. It wouldn't maintain enough pressure and the coolant would boil before the fan switch/computer would turn the fan on at 220. So a new radiator cap allowed it to build pressure and the temp would reach 220 without boiling then the fan would kick on as it should. Anecdotally, although the car was fixed, it ended up coming back for a leaking water pump as the spring and seal was worn enough that it couldn't hold back the pressure caused by the new cap.

    Quick and reliable diagnosis. But parts changers would change it immediately and would say we were right. Yes twice in ten times they really are.
    Original idea for coolant extraction.

  • @VideoNOLA
    @VideoNOLA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, had to replace the fan on mine, too. Along with rigging the leaky vacuum reservoir, changing out the frosted headlights, diagnosing faulty grounds (esp. in the door wiring harness), propping the busted mixer door under the dash, dealing with Death Wobble, deleting the destroyed 4WD tranny, upgrading the fuel injectors, unclogging the windshield wiper lines and replacing the seized washer pumps, beefing up the "knocking" front sway bar, wrestling with the brakes and smoking caliper, chasing down engine leaks, and buying a new radio when the factory one stopped playing.
    Other than that, my trusty Jeep Grand Cherokee was a great ride!!

    That Bosch module looks very handy. I like scan tools that do bidirectional testing and read live data. It looks like that can read live misfire data as well, very helpful. On a side note, you said the evap purge solenoid went bad previously in the week. Sometimes they activate the ses light like yours did, other times I have seen them cause a hard/extended crank immediately after a fuel fill. The gas vapors end up going into the intake causing I believe a temporarily rich condition.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep you are 100% right on that. They will flood the intake and have a start stall or an extended crank.

    My '88 Cherokee has one belt-driven, viscous clutch fan (had to replace it this summer with a junkyard fan because the viscous clutch was seized - the blades wouldn't turn freely with the engine off) and one electric fan. My Mum had a Toyota Corona Mk 2. The mechanical fan from the crankshaft pulley was removed (was damaged and replacement part then could not be found) and the auto shop installed a electric fan. He also installed a manual switch to turn on or off. No auto on or off. Was fun pulling up to a store and turning engine off, then manually turning off fan 10 seconds later. Would get alot of attention. This was in 1993.

    Great video Eric I was thinking of getting that Bosch tool, but I was under the impression that you had to purchase a license from a dealer to use it as a scan tool, I know you have to for programming, I was just going to ask you when you was getting the pico, I just bought a pico myself it will be here tomorrow!! I cant wait I am like a little kid the night before Christmas waiting for it. LOL

    I have a 2006 with the same problem. I see the high and low relays in the box behind the battery. Is their a power relay under the passenger headlight also?

    That Bosch Vci is the same tool as the gm Mdi, I bet if you could acquire the gm gds2 software the Bosch unit would work with it

    Hey have you seen a lot of the Jeep Liberty vehicles with spun bearings and other catastrophic failures? If so have you been able to pinpoint a common cause? I have seen so many of these for sale with the 3.7 that have engine failures.

    I had a 1998 Chrysler Concord with the same problem, what I found each motor had a seprate ground, both were bad. Made up new ground wires, and they worked great. I must have been lucky, compared to this.
    My Chrysler had 2 small fans one came on at around 195 degrees then the other at 205 if I remember correctly

    I have a cheap Pico scope, haven't used it much. But I love to see that in action. Guess you get a lot of nice stuff for free to test out and show us. Almost 50 thousand subscribers and increasing makes companies throw stuff at you :-)

    Eric I have a question...I have a 2000 grand cherokee, it also has a single 2 speed electric fan. When I turn the a/c on in my 1998 cherokee and another vehicle I have the fan instantly comes on. On the grand cherokee the fan comes on when the temp rises to 210 on the temperature guage, but when I turn the ac on the fan doesn't spin. Do you know how this 2 speed fan works ? I have replaced the fan relay, but not the fan. Could the fan be faulty ?
