Bought a 2024 Barcelona Red 3 weeks ago instead of the ice white because I was hesitant on buying the white because of the issues I read on the forums.
When I was truck shopping I test drove the 5th gen 4Runner and the new Tacoma back to back because I thought the new Taco would give me a good idea of what the 6th gen 4Runner will be like. I purchased a 2024 5th gen 4Runner Limited and love it. No regrets.
I put a weathertech bug deflector on my 4runner a week after purchase and I use radar cruise whenever I'm on the Highway and haven had any rock chips at 18,000 miles
I had the same exact issue. I got a black '24 ORP early October. I had to drive it 300 miles to get it home. I got it home, washed it, and found chips on the hood and along the driver side. It made me sick. It really took the wind out of my sails. I do absolutely love it though. I think the dealership car wash left some kind of weird marks on the paint as well, so I might just bring it in somewhere and get it professionally touched up and get some protection put on it. I put WeatherTech deflectors on it too, which I was going to do anyway.
I have a 2022 Barcelona Red Metallic. It has 3 different paints in there. I just turned 10K. Its not my everyday driver. But no chips. Plus we do long drives. I have done a few 12 hour drives on bad highways with a lot of trucks. Been good so far as far as paint chips on the hood. Yes I have done PPF.
I had 2010 4Runner for 11 years, the only thing I had to replace is park/neutral switch on a side of transmission. This switch rusted out and was slowly dying. Small rock chips is nothing really, touch up paint just gives it more character. To be honest I was sort of upset when I got first scratch from tree branches and tried to buff it out, but after few off road trips I gave up and just made sure that metal is not showing . To me it's not the truck you keep pretty and spotless : ) it just needs regular maintenance and rust proofing.
Unacceptable that you are having paint chip issues so soon after owning your 4 runner. I just bought the exact same vehicle in Silver. Now I’m thinking I should put a protective coat on the hood to prevent the possibility of chipping. I’ll speak to the dealer and see if they recommend that. Otherwise, I really love the car/truck. It was definitely the right vehicle to get.
@Jean-ClaudeRivalland i bought a black '24 ORP on 8/15. Had to drive 200 miles to find a dealer without ridiculous add ons or markups. Picked up my first hood chip on the way home 🤦♂️
Bought my 2024 TRD ORP on 9/4. Immediately had a PPF put on the whole front clip and then ceramic on the whole truck and tint on front driver and passenger windows. Undercoating done (rust belt state). Other main upgrade is Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires. Relocated the AC condensation tube so it doesn’t drain on the frame. Did some interior accessories, etc. Great truck!!
My 24 off-road premium 4Rnr (5k miles) is in shop now getting detailed, paint correction, wrapped & ceramic coating with a minor upgrade to TRD pro front grill and black out bumpers. Looks so much better and like you I was surprised bout the chips from rocks, etc but happy I’m getting the front clear wrapped. Concerning the power… the “pedal monster” throttle controller is a product I’ve looked into and may be adding. There’s a video demonstrating why it’s safer than the “pedal commander”.
I bought the exact ‘24 model in silver 5 months ago and love it! I traded my 2017 TRD off road for this and that one had I a horrendous stone gouge on the hood on that one at 800 miles! It never rusted! That hood must have been made out of some sort of alloy.
2024 TRD ORP in black here. I'm at 1700 miles, planning an initial oil change at 2000. No problems at all, but it's early. I put a bug deflector and Go Rhino running boards on just days after purchasing. I hope this helps with the paint chips, but again, it's early.
Nice Truck…..I have the ‘24 Toyota 4Runner TRD ORP in Underground Color and mine came with the PPF Clear Bra across the front top part of the hood along with the standard PPF down the lower sides. Double check what Package yours came with because it should have came with the PPF Clear Bra unless it’s a different package? I also put a AVS Bug/Stone Deflector on mine and that helps too. I do have some very small minor nicks in certain areas from normal driving during long road trips but hardly noticeable. I’m very particular about keeping mine clean but I understand that it’s my daily driver vehicle and that all I need to do is be consistent on keeping it clean, waxed and polished/buffed which are all things that I do and then just Enjoy. I will mention that I now have 10K Miles on mine and have already had the Oil Changed Twice at the Dealership within the first 10K Miles. I highly recommend doing this no matter what the dealership recommends. The first couple of Oil Changes are so important for the Engine especially if you drive a lot. These vehicles are built like a Tank and I’m very pleased with my purchase. Thanks for posting!!! Have a Blessed Day
I have 2024 ORP with 5000 miles. I have some orange peeling in the paint. Not that noticeable unless you look for it. This truck is solid and I think the 2024's will be the most valuable down the road, especially considering cars in general are becoming much less reliable and junk quality. But I'm going to do something to protect that hood for sure.
I would do the paint touch up first then the ppf protection on entire front -hood -a pillars and roof piece right in front of sunroof , this hits all the impact points from driving , this is what i did on my 24..4 runner pro underground ! 👍
Hey there! I have a 2024 4Runner TRD Pro in Underground. You aren't the only one with this issue. Mine straight from the dealership has swirls and bad orange peel. After a few miles I had multiple rock paint chips... Maybe this is an issue with the Underground color? Seems like the paint is soft and will have issues down the line? Hoping to get a recall to get this repainted haha. Everything else has been amazing!
@@austinstroup5665 Yeah, it does seem like Underground is having issues on the Tacomas as well. Parts manager at my Toyota dealership said there’s three other customers waiting on Underground touch up paint…
My 24’ ORP (Ice Cap) is at 3700 miles. Currently on vacation in NC. Will definitely have to check for chips when I get back home. I too am thinking about a bug deflector. Take care.
My 24 SR5 Premium got a rock chip from a dirt truck. I bought some touch up paint in Nautical Blue for it however my sales guy got it fixed on the house. Touch up direct is where I got my paint.
Why does anyone care about the paint? I got mine for going off road. If you don’t have scratches, dings, and paint chips, you’re not playing hard enough or even really using the damn thing. Mine has thousands of off road mileage and still looks great!! Forget the paint. It will be fine!!
Got a 24 trd off road premium this year, can't wait to get it paid for & start doing some modifying, wish i could afford a spare as well!!! I do still have a 98 tacoma, so guess that will be my spare!!
Yeah brother I followed suit trading in my Tundra for a 4Runner. These things are great. So much character and the build quality, materials, everything is so much better. I’m at 9k miles.
I just got my 2024 4Runner ORP in Underground on October 10th and everything is better than the 2022 Tacoma OR I traded in, especially the interior. Drives extremely smooth, better seating position, no gear hunting, no stupid dual climate controls, better acceleration, better cornering, softer suspension on road, quieter cabin/no exhaust drone, back seat space is amazing. I undercoated it last night with fluid film and the drive shafts are so well finished compared to the Tacoma.
I might suggest a toyota factory wind/bug deflector on the front of the hood. I have one and while it doesn't protect the windshield so much, it DOES protect against paint chips like you've experienced. I personally like the look of it, but some do not. I have the 2023 ORP which is identical to yours except in Lunar Rock. I love the truck and still very pleased with it.
I bought my 2024 4Runner in March and I'm having the same paint issues. I also have a 2001 Tundra that I've driven for 22 years, and the paint on it chips just as easy as the 4Runner, so it's not a great surprise to me. Keep an eye on the rear fender, it WILL get chipped by rocks kicked up by the front tire. I offroad a lot in mine and the rear fender is the worst location for rock chips. More so than the hood. I did have the 60 mph wobble with the OEM tires, and I still had it after removing the original tires and installing a new set of KO2s in size 265/70/17. I have since, lifted it 2.75" in the front and 1" in the rear and installed a set of TRD Pro wheels and a set of the new KO3 tires in size 285/70/17. I don't have any wobble at all with that set up. I pulled the OEM wheelset from the 4Runner, along with the KO2 tires still mounted, and installed them on my Tundra. I didn't have them balanced before installing them on the Tundra, and to my surprise, I had no wobble. I'm convinced that wobble is unique to the 4Runner. But I love this 4Runner though, and I'm very happy with my decision to buy it. I expect it to last longer than me.
I’m not gunna lie.. the paint on the 4R is the only issue and I’ve owned 4runners in the past, you should’ve gotten ceramic coating especially on the front end. As far as the steering wobble.. a good balance will take care of it. It’s not an issue
Just turned 5000 miles on 2024 Limited with Pearl White paint. Scratched the lift gate when I opened it inside a garage with limited clearance, also chipped the paint on a fender when I brushed against a bush passing a car on a narrow road. I've bought the touchup paint, but everything I read says the Pearl White touchup paint is difficult to use. Android Auto can be a bit quirky. Also had to swap out the USB cable - I suspect the 4Runner USB port's ability to run at higher speeds with a fast device (new Samsung 5G cell phone) is problematic - swapping out for a longer cable (which then gives longer propagation times so easier for the port to handle) and that cured it.
Dude, I’ve had bunches of Tacos and 4Runner’s Toyo tires are the only way to fly zero balance issues… Mickey Thompson’s you can get pretty good, but you gotta find a good shop IMHO only way to fly Toyo… I currently have two 2024 4Runner’s one’s a PRO one’s an ORP, a 23 Tacoma and my daughter has a 22 Tacoma and a 23 4Runner Toyota let’s go places 😂👍👍
Have you considered installing sprint booster to eliminate the throttle delay when pressing on accelerator pedal? Will eliminate sluggishness. Sprint booster was the first thing I installed soon as I got my 24’ trd pro. I hated the throttle delay. It’s day and night difference I had to the car back the dealer to do wheel alignment. Was pulling slightly to the right Not sure maybe when installed the fox suspension at the port, they didnt do alignment properly but the dealer corrected it
Add a Banks Pedal Monster. I have a 2024 4Runner with 5100 or so miles with a Pedal Monster. It removes the annoying flat spot built into the factory settings for the accelerator pedal. Do not buy the "Pedal Commander" from another provider as the Banks Pedal Monster is far superior. I am getting 16-24 MPG in the city and 20-24 on the highway by driving rationally with the Monster. If you set the Pedal Monster to "Race" mode it makes very crisp shifts between gears so I prefer to keep it in "City mode" at about 80% of its maximum override of the stock settings. I had one on my 2017 V6 Tacoma, too. It made a great difference there. The secret to the Banks unit is that it is connected to the accelerator pedal and the OBDC so it has more information with which to help you control your 4Runner.
Curious .. Have you had a bad experience with the Pedal commander? Have a 2021 trail SE bought new 11/20 & been using PC probably 2 months after truck was purchased .. no issues whatsoever. It’s been a fantastic mod. Would like to hear. Thanks
Rock chips suck! Have a ton on my 2021 Raptor and they stick out since it's black. None on our 2024 TRD ORP yet...yet. We've got over 2K miles and had it for 2 months now. No complaints really. I do have issues sometimes getting Apple car play to work even with the factory cable. Sometimes it'll reboot itself after first turning it on and it booting up. Which rock sliders are those you have, OEM? Ours came with the Predator steps and I'd like to change them. If the new Tacoma feels cheap I'm sure the new 4Runner will as well. I do like the looks f the outside and the interior, but we're pretty happy with the 2024 even if it doesn't have a lot of the newer tech. Anyways, thanks for the update! Need to do a full video on mine.
@@JPSaidSo I’d like to see that video also. Last time I applied touch-up paint on my vehicle was when I owned a 1974 Vega GT! 😆 Also enjoying my new 5th gen ORP. Built like a tank!
Bruh, I got a small rock chip on the windshield on my 2024 TRD OFF ROAD Premium with 300 miles on it and within first 3 weeks of ownership...When you are driving 70+ MPH on the Highway...Stuff happens....
I put 285 ridge grapplers on my 2023 TRD ORP and it was smooth as glass for 5,000 miles. Just did the first rotation and the steering wheel shakes at 60mph. I've never had a vehicle that required balancing after a rotation! I've run tires for 60k miles on the initial balance with zero vibration. What is up with these trucks?
@@P4X1279 I also haven't experienced this before with any vehicle. From what I have researched, these 5th gens are really sensitive to discrepancies in tire balance.
@ZetaDogProductions Really strange. Nothing that unique about 4R suspension geometry. Well, obviously, the front two tires were adequately balanced and are now on the rear axle. I don't screw around with fixing stuff that's not broken, so I'm not going to have them rebalanced. I suspected the passenger front was the problem and had it balanced, which helped a little. I'll just get the driver front balanced and hope that fixes the rest of it.
@@MrCovert23 Yep - The block itself is not cracked. They're casting marks from the casting die. I believe they're called "turtle cracks." Anyway, it's purely cosmetic and not structural.
Toyota paint, especially in more flat colors, has always been poor quality. Magnetic Gray Metallic is considerably better than Underground. Getting rid of it was crazy. Otherwise though, man that car will last you forever.
Rock chips suck and I will say Toyota, paint seems to be weak, specially white, which is all I buy! Clear bra about the only thing you can do. One of those things in life that sucks😂🤷♂️🍺
some add-a-bug-deflector comments below; there is another 4Runner youtube review where the poster was understandably upset when the factory bug deflector vibrated on the ends at speed and dug divots in the hood paint. look for his video. paint chips too on my 2023 Corolla Hybrid hood I just traded in this past week on my 2024 4Runner limited. fact of life, rock chips happen. I had plastic on my old vette, 3m film even, turned yellow from uv rays AND the white vette was kept in a closed garage under a car cover! pee yellow plastic film on a white vette, eeeyuw! (note kept the car 10 years from film application, but i didn't see a dime more than book when I sold it even with perfect panels.) I see aftermarket wheels/tires (from stock) 4Runner limited on your rig; the 20 incher yokohama mamas stock on the limited are optimized for hiway driving, smooth as glass on my inaugural 360 miles home from the acquiring dealer. i about swallowed my chew when I read in another review that their stock limited 4Runner Yokohama mamas were still showing tread at 75,000 miles! Owner attributed to yearly alignment jobs. of course that poster had the dreaded limited red shock leak problem from premature failure at that mileage. Extended warranty or Bilsteins? since the platinum extended 10yr/125K miles will be good for probably only 1 shock changeout before expiring, will save that money and apply it to the bilstein substitutes when i see the red shocks turning black. take away: love the 'Runner! I am glad I read of its demise while I could still find the color inside/outside i really wanted; the limited is like an ultrareliable upscale Range Rover lookalike with the chrome/leather/wood-finished trim and cooled seats inside. itsakeeper!
I think it's an underground issue, IV seen lots of issues with this paint on all vehicles not just 4runners. I just got an underground 4runner less then 3 months ago, I have 2 chips in almost b the same area as you. I was shocked and annoyed. The Tacoma I traded in I had for 2 years and went on 9 road trips in it, I had zero rock chips. IV also had a 1st gen and 2nd gen Tacoma and a 2019 4runner and never had rock chips. I think the underground paint is trash, it looks cool but I don't think its going to hold up.
Got one just like yours, but Black . Beautiful truck. Only have 800 miles on it right now. Thanks for update.
I ordered some PPF for mine because of the rock chips

Curious .. Have you had a bad experience with the Pedal commander? Have a 2021 trail SE bought new 11/20 & been using PC probably 2 months after truck was purchased .. no issues whatsoever. It’s been a fantastic mod. Would like to hear. Thanks
Sign of the times, you made the right purchase....
@@ChristianGrest Yep, the rock sliders are OEM from installed at port. Thanks for watching and posting!
where did you buy your touchup paint?
@@knowltonthomas Through Toyota, but you can get it through Amazon. It just takes a while.
Have the same truck, same color, really interested to see how the touch up paint goes! Can you post a video?
@@JPSaidSo Sure thing. I will post an update video once I get the chips sorted.
@@JPSaidSo I’d like to see that video also. Last time I applied touch-up paint on my vehicle was when I owned a 1974 Vega GT! 😆 Also enjoying my new 5th gen ORP. Built like a tank!
@@ZetaDogProductions just got the same chips in basically the same spot as yours! Any update on how the touch up went?
I just hit a little under 5k on my limited and realized my subwoofer doesn’t work
Bruh, I got a small rock chip on the windshield on my 2024 TRD OFF ROAD Premium with 300 miles on it and within first 3 weeks of ownership...When you are driving 70+ MPH on the Highway...Stuff happens....
I have the exact same vehicle and I’m having the same problem!!🎉 my paint is chipping off as well😢
I put a weather tech bug deflectoron seems to be doing OK but I’m only at 1000 miles
I had the wobble , took mine to a tire shop and had them road forced. Find a shop that does that . About 30 bucks a pc. Great content! Ty
Uh no. Keep the 5th gen. Look at all the issues Toyota is dealing with. Maybe wait for a later model year once or if they can work out their kinks.
What issues?
Just bought AVS bug deflector on my 4runner
@@fodera0915 Nice, how do you like it?
Adds character 😂
Never rotate your tires on this truck been down that road not worth it.
Skimped out on the hood protector😅
6th gen will have thinner layers of paint. You're good with the 5th gen.
Is your engine block cracked?
@@MrCovert23 Yep - The block itself is not cracked. They're casting marks from the casting die. I believe they're called "turtle cracks." Anyway, it's purely cosmetic and not structural.
Toyota paint, especially in more flat colors, has always been poor quality. Magnetic Gray Metallic is considerably better than Underground. Getting rid of it was crazy. Otherwise though, man that car will last you forever.
These are not problems.. problems are, engine not starting, transmission not moving, smoke from exhaust, electric break down, etc...
I ceramic coated mine as soon as i got it off the lot got a couple little paint chips already
ugh, same. definitely getting a hood deflector
@@knowltonthomasyea swirl marks too are very easy to get on this paint
Ceramic coating is a scam
@@kerplunk38880 100% untrue, i'll continue to coat my vehicle annually to enjoy several benefits that have nothing to do with preventing rock chips
The paint chips were caused by the driver following too closely. Nothing to do with the vehicle.
Don't tailgate the semi's.
Rock chips suck and I will say Toyota, paint seems to be weak, specially white, which is all I buy! Clear bra about the only thing you can do. One of those things in life that sucks😂🤷♂️🍺
2023 orp here
You shouldn't have to purchase Touch up paint and a bottle of clear coat they should have given it to you for the money you pay
Why would they give it to you? They aren’t a charity.
Yup, Toyota paint sucks. I just re did my hood on my 22 due to paint chips. I added a Bug Sheild also.
some add-a-bug-deflector comments below; there is another 4Runner youtube review where the poster was understandably upset when the factory bug deflector vibrated on the ends at speed and dug divots in the hood paint. look for his video. paint chips too on my 2023 Corolla Hybrid hood I just traded in this past week on my 2024 4Runner limited. fact of life, rock chips happen. I am glad I read of its demise while I could still find the color inside/outside i really wanted; the limited is like an ultrareliable upscale Range Rover lookalike with the chrome/leather/wood-finished trim and cooled seats inside. itsakeeper!
Fake hood scoop is absurd.
This video just to wine about rock chips, just ridiculous!
Don't drive it and end of the "ISSUE"!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@miguelvazquez9962 No one is whining, buddy. Just sharing my experience, which seems to mirror a lot of other owners.' Thanks for watching.
@@kyledanger45 Yeah, I've heard the new Tacomas are having issues with this paint as well. I wonder why?
