It's important to know the correct procedure as well as the correct way to cuss at it ... and you covered it all! Thanks!! I also have a 2004 V10 Touareg and it has TWO of these big-ass batteries - one under the seat and one under the spare tire. They are a little easier to get to but take many more cuss words. UPDATE: I watched this video at work this morning - went and got a new battery at lunch - and replaced it when I got home. They said someone had ordered that battery and never picked it up, otherwise they don't normally have it in stock. And the one in there was the original OEM battery that was 8 1/2 years old; carpet had never been cut (I bought used 4 years ago so I figured it was probably the original battery). Knowing the sequence and secrets made all the difference ... I got it done in about 30 minutes with slightly less cussin', but I've had a LOT of battery experience with the V10 and had all the right tools. Two tips: Go get a vacuum and clean under the seat because it's the only time you'll have access under there; and the seat tracks have long pins in the back that fit into holes in the chassis that help line up the bolt holes, just make sure you have the seat far enough forward when you slip it into the holes because there are holes it will fit into that are too far back. OMGosh, I'm a girl, living out here in Colorado in the middle of no where, have no choice but to do this myself... are you serious. I got a used 2006 VW touareg in 2013 and it's been a good purchase, no problems for the past 9 -10 yrs but seriously, this battery thing is a pain...I may have passed it up if I had known this... p.s. love the narration of the video...real, honest and funny...

Some notes that might be helpful for others:
- the rail cover will pop off with a small flat head screwdriver
- you can get by with a T30 for the big bolts on the sliders; but if you try to torque it down (45 NM) it’ll slip.
- if it’s the first time the battery has been changed, you’ll have to snip 4 tiny connecting strips of carpet in order to pull back the carpet (no harm in doing this)
- don’t over tighten the small screw for the air vent; it’s a plastic to plastic connection and you can break it
- when you are disconnecting the harness, the most of what you see is the female receiver (this took me forever to figure out)
- Disconnecting the harness was the hardest part... until you get to those 4 clips
- the 4 clips are easy except that one pointed out in the video. I couldn’t get my hand back there, so I grabbed some plastic tubing I had laying around and lasso’d it around the latch and pulled for a bit.
- when you disconnect the battery, on the negative terminal there’s a separate connector. I strongly recommend you disconnect this so you don’t catch it / crimp it when you are manhandling the unholy heavy battery out of and into the car. (Don’t forget to plug it back in)
- when you’re putting the lid back on, don’t force it shut if there’s resistance - it’s easy to catch the acid drainage tube
- if you’re using a T30 to get the bolts back on (like I did) you’ll likely have trouble getting rear bolt closest to the console completely tightened down due to clearance
- if you’re wondering “does my battery need to be replaced?” The dealer or autozone are not able to load test it without going through the disassembly process; they can however give you a voltage test.
Armed with this video, this took me 1 hour to take the battery out and 40 minutes to get it in (1 hr 40min total)
Note: I am not a mechanic, but am comfortable working on cars.

Helpful and entertaining, doing this today - thank you. Missed Christmas but santa brought me a group H9 AGM today for my 2015 TDI. Fortunately enough power to move the seat still but subzero temps dealt the final blow on Christmas eve and left me stranded for the holidays. Zero indication of poor battery performance prior. Thanks again... did I mention this cheered me up?

I referenced this video again today when I needed to install a battery in our other Touareg - this really helped get the job done with minimal fuss - thank you for posting.
I would just note that I needed a triple square to remove the seat bolts - others have referred to this - luckily I have a set of triple square bits but, for those of you that don't it's worth being aware - some of the commenters used large torx bits, not an ideal solution but I guess it works in a pinch.

- I’ve hard that when you disconnect the old battery, the car loses its memory and you have to input codes to get the battery ‘talking’ to the car again. Is that true?
- can anyone let me know the size of the bit required to remove the 4 bolts from the seat runners?
VKJR Thank you for the compliment, and to answer your questions. For the first one the car does lose its memory and you would have to adapt everything all over no biggie. But the only code I think you would have to input would be the radio code but that’s if the radio was disconnected. And the second question is a 8mm triplesquare.

Great video and well said!!! However just a heads up, if it has zero power you open the bonnet and drivers side for you guys will be a red cover with a positive connection under it, then take the negative from any other screw. Plug ya jumper pack onto it and boom you have power 🔋

Thanks a ton! How long do the batteries last usually? My Touareg is at 68k miles and I need to remove the seat for the freaking drivers seat buckle which is broken and pops out occasionally. Since my Rex is a 2014, I wonder if I should preventatively change the battery already or if it’s a waste. Since they decided to put it in such a bad spot, it might last longer than the usual battery?
Hey I am glad that it helped. But to answer your question it takes at least 24 months for a battery to start being week. Especially if you live in a cold climate.
Hey thanks for the vid. I just bought one and thought I’d better check the date on the battery before some summer trips. I had no idea. What knuckle heads. 2 feet further back and they could have put it under the back seat with flip up easy access. My last car was a rusty trusty Pathfinder. So easy to work on.
Wow I agree they should of put it somewhere else. But yeah man that’s a huge come up you did from a pathfinder to a Touareg.
Dont forget to adjust ECU. You must tell her "Hey, you have new battery". So the ECU will process the charging of battery at exact current. Not necrssary, but correct way..
I saw you disconnected all seat cable, including airbag yellow cable. Did you have any issue after you connected battery. I specifically talking about “check engine light”, “SRS” light or similar considering that car was with no power for some time. Thanks few years ago I used your video to change the battery, but at that time I had jumped my old battery to the car. I was afraid that car pc will get damaged or need to be reseted at dealer $$$.
Hey, thanks for liking the video. I did not have any issues because I made sure all of the connectors that were removed were connected back before starting. You may have had faults that were already stored. Also, Volkswagens tend to trigger faults for low voltage. Once you clear all the faults, you should not have an issue. Glad I could be of assistance a few years ago as well.

Ok I know what problem you have. You need to clear all the faults. Most likely you have low voltage faults clear them and you should be fine.
And that's why I have a NOCO GB40 in the car. Jump it under the hood or use it to power up the seat! Thanks for the video. Now I gotta go do it. Aren't those seat mounting bolts Triple Squares?
Well, I should of noted that in the video that you should have a jump pack handy but to answer your question. Yes you need a triple square socket I believe it’s at 8 mm.
What size triple square is needed for the bolts on the slider?
If my memory serves me correctly it’s a 8mm
How do you remove the black AC vent after unscrewing that T20? It’s stuck under the fuse box

Great video. I was able to replace my battery fairly easily while watching this video. However, my Tailgate truck won't open or close anymore. it was working fine right before my battery died. I got a new AGM H7 battery from Pepboys, and everything seems to be working fine except for the tailgate truck... it latch/unlatches but won't open. It won't work with the key fab either. any suggestions? Could this be because of the new battery doesn't have enough amp/power?
Well try to adapt the rear hatch by holding down the button on the lid. If it works you should be fine. As for the other concerns, I would make sure you have the right DIN size. If that fails try performing a cap discharge that should reset the basic settings. If all else fails take it to the dealer.
My carpet 100% prevents one from getting to the battery w/o cutting it up or removing it in some complex way. Anyone else have that issue?
Is there a fuse for the radiator fan? Mine just quit working and I’ve checked the other fuses in the side panels and engine
Yes there should be a fuse for the fans.

The BEM (battery code on new battery sticker) needs to be programmed into the car with VCDS. So they car knows it has a new battery so it can charge it at the correct rate.
You don’t need to do this step but it’s the correct procedure.

Keltech 20901 i found out, its right under the passenger seat’s footrest. just unclip the carpet and there is a small compartment door, open it and its right there....so so much easier than the previous touareg

It depends on the engine - see whatbattery.co.uk/vw-touareg-ii-2010-2017-batteries/. For instance diesel versions use either the 95 Ah / 850 A, 110 / 920 or even the 105 Ah / 950 A
My seat motor went out now I can’t move my seat how do I get my battery out
Honestly you would have to fix that motor. All off the access to the bolt would be tight to get too.

Someone glued or ultra screwed down 2 of the screws for the seat in my Toureg and I’m tryna figure out why would the idiot glue down the screws like as it no one will ever need to get to my battery, jeez I’m a female and my battery is completely dead 💀 I’m so pissed
Ok no worries, try to get the exact triple square bolt and remove it slowly, and try not to strip it.

Well from the many years I have been a Volkswagen technician I would say from my experience, that the newer Touaregs are easier to remove the battery.

its the transmission speed sensor, it sits on the top of the bell housing of the transmission, so that means that you will have to lift the body from drivetrain, just to remove a $60 part. imagine the labor on that repair?

on the v6 non diesel they fail most commonly after 120k@@treedeblue

What is the socket size for the bolts?
St. Maurice 10mm socket, 8mm triple square and T20 torx

So dramatic! It is what it is and there are jump ports under the hood so u don’t have to worry about a dead battery and moving the seat.
