The reason for battery acid Is that there is a vent on these batteries on the sides. There was a vent tube at the front that goes outside that appears to have disappeared.
Why why why under the front seat. My bettle's was under the rear seat very easily accessible. Yes closer to the engine. But 3 more feet of cable!! Vs hours extra in labor to replace it under the front seat. Yes

Older T1 models also have a gas tube to take away any off gas away from the seat area to the exterior underside of the vehicle.
