I love how people like that guy will take the time & explain stuff like the lock system.

Very cool, I love watching locks working. I grew up near a set of locks on the great Ohio River.
I took my son down there a few times when he was little and he got a kick out of it.
Enjoy NY and safe travels, hugs to Jax.

Eric, in the US and Canada, free camping and facilities are provided along canals for the boaters to overnight. They obviously do not have wheeled vehicles aboard their boats for camping. So camping facilities are for tents. It will be that way along all canals. An amazing trip in Canada similar to this is along the Trent-Severn waterway in Ontario.

    • @lynnholtz
      @lynnholtz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Trent-Severn Waterway charges overnight mooring fees for boats and camping fees. Camping permits are for boaters only although with prior notice and TSW permission they may accommodate cycling and hiking groups. Not free. Mooring and camping permit fees support the TSW. Various locks have various stay periods too. Many only overnight.

A really great loch to check out is in Seattle going in/out of Lake Union. It has a salmon run as part of it. You can go underground and check out the salmon swimming upstream through the loch. It is such an awesome site to see how they can move boats through the lochs without blocking or harming the flow of the salmon. AWESOME!

I am right down the canal from you. Fairport, New York. The towpath on either side of the canal is great for walking or biking. The towpath was used by the mules pulling the boats. I am at Hamlin Beach state park camping now. Pretty...not free. You should make time to scoot up to Lake Ontario to see the great lake. Enjoy NY. It's a beautiful state

Hey Eric! My wife and I are going to be purchasing a big class c motorhome(30+ feet with 2 slides)in the next couple months and going full time in it. She will be working full time over the internet from the rv (going to get some kind of satellite rv internet I think) and I am on disabilty. We know your busy with all the hard work you put into your channel and traveling but could we maybe bounce some ideas off you about full time rv living and get advice from you about looking for a used class c? We love your channel and enjoy it so much. We learned so much from you. We especially appreciate how you dont sugar coat living full time in a rv and give pros and cons and show the bad times as well as the good. You are one of the most real full time rv'ers on youtube. Please give Jax a treat from my wife and I. Drive safe and keep up the great videos!

I was just up in the area of Macedon. I actually stayed at Holley, NY on the Erie Canal over there and in Albion NY on the Canal again. Holley allows 48 hours stay with permission from the local police, basically they just wanted to know you are staying there. I loved it. I am in a van and the parking area was small. I met a couple of Cyclists traveling from Oregon to Maine. Thanks Eric for sharing.

I grew up about 5 miles west of Macedon, in Fairport. Fairport has a lift bridge like no other in the world. The locks have four grates in the bottom, 2 that let the water out, they close then the other 2 are opened to let the water in, it is all gravity feed as far as filling and emptying the locks, so filling the locks the incoming water will seek the same level as the upper canal where the water comes from.

Oh Eric, you must go up to the into the mountains. Old Forge and stay on that route. So so beautiful 😍. The leaves will be turning soon. Just ask the locals. If you miss it then you've lost much beauty. Also Apple picking has starting. We alway went up to Mexico, New York to pick them. Alexandria Bay is another nice town to walk around in . Plus, take the boat ride around the 1000 islands . It's a good couple hour drive. so beautiful. A might see.

...free camping there because the boats passing thru are transient. Most are doing the ''Great Loop''. Locks shut down at night. So when tied up here overnight they can pitch a tent not far from their boat. Not really meant for vehicle camping.
Alexander NY Steamshow going on now to see some neat old timy tractors and such.
Rideau canal in Canada are all hand operated = no electric or hydraulics. Also checkout the Peterborough Lift lock and Big Chute for an awesome engineering lock system.

I took a cabin cruiser I bought in Long Island Sound up the Mohawk river to the Canal and on to lake Ontario then the Welland Canal onto lake Erie. It's a beautiful trip.
Enjoy the canal. At least you can get gas easier than I did, the damage to the canal docks and locks was still under repairs.

    Great earworm Eric Lolol!
Since Jeff said "probably before the slide rule was invented", I knew that was incorrect because my grandfather had one for school in the 1890's. Sooooo, of course I had to google it and, drumroll. The slide rule was invented in 1622 by William Oughtred. May predate even the beginning design stages of the canal by just a tad. 😉
Thanks for the locks footage, very cool. And thanks to Jeff for taking the time to show you (us) the inner workings and brief history. Glad Jax made a showing.
Signed, never giving you or jax up
