Good composition in woodland photography can often be complicated and challenging, so I thought it would be useful to talk through one of my recent photos from a local woodland and give some tips along the way. I then complete the process by going through my photo editing process in Adobe Lightroom and finally printing the image on some Fotospeed matt paper.
As I mentioned, Meg has been very well so we've not been out much in recent weeks. She had a lump removed from her leg which thankfully turned out to be a benign tumour. She's now fully recovered, happy and loving life again :-). We're looking forward to a lot more photography and filming as we transition into autumn!

You got just ONE thing wrong, Simon, that seeing the editing can be a bit boring... For me at least, that is the absolutely most exciting part bar none. Totally invaluable. I could watch it all day long! Lovely photo as always. Cheers!
I normally switch off straight away when we sit in the classroom NOT because I don’t want to learn but because I just can’t take it in and remember stuff. On this time I sat through your hole video love your work some of if not the best forest work out there amazing
Many thanks, Paul! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Who said you have to sit and close your eyes to meditate. This whole process of yours seems very spiritual to me.
As ever so much love and enthusiasm is shown, which produces a wonderful composition which most of us probably never see. Excellent detailed video from start to finish. As ever my wife send her best wishes to Meg, a video without her is just not a Simon Baxter Video. Made my day watching this, thank you.
Thank you very much, Martin :-)
I feel like this video changed my life. it answered quite a few little questions for me that added up in a big way. good job.
Great video. The difference between the image taken and the original is unbelievable. A shot of some tree to a beautiful image. Excellent and thanks
This was a masterclass in landscape photography, thank you.
As someone who is new to woodland photography, it is great to watch your process from start to finish. It was interesting to see how you develop your image in lightroom and the final print looks superb. You are an inspiration Simon.
Thank you very much, Stephen!
Great video. Just discovered your channel after the Thomas Heaton vlog. Yours is by far the best channel for woodland photography I've come across after watching 12 months of TH-cam photography channels. Learning so much and very inspirational. Thanks 👍
Great episode mate. Lovely start to a Sat morn.
Cheers buddy! Much appreciated :)
Superb video, no-one does woodland better than you.
Much appreciated, Colin :-)
Hi Simon I am a big fan of your photography and volg which you present here. I see that Joe Cornish has a big impact on your photography and the entire creative process. You have to learn from the best. greetings and waiting for the next episode. Christopher
Thank you. He was certainly a big influence in the beginning and I very much enjoy our outings and conversations. These days I try to carve my own path to ensure I'm true to my own vision :)

Of course, your photography is one of a kind, I have been observing it since your first episode on TH-cam, and that is why I respect you very much and I watch your videos with great attention (despite my poor English). You yourself are an inspiration to many many people. Thank you Simon
Outstanding video!! A Simon Baxter creation from start to finish is a whole lot of insightful information. Best 20 min education I ever received. Thanks, really enjoyed it and so great to see Meg back out in the field!!!!!!!
Thank you very much :-)
What a great all round video….👍
A bit longer run time but fully worthwhile. Thank you for sharing this with us. Do hope that Meg makes a complete recovery from whatever has been bothering. Her energy seemed a bit lower in this video.
Thank you. She is fully recovered but she had to be on the leash near the photo location because of a nearby drop :)
Simon-- Thanks again for the education from start to finish. Composition is challenging for me and this helps greatly and is saved to my library. Glad I stayed to the end to see Meg chomping away and dashing toward camera. Made me laugh! Thanks also for the recurring planet health awareness focus as well. Best to you and your loved ones for health and happiness!
Many thanks, Michele! Glad it was enjoyable and useful. Thanks again and all the best :)
Meg is absolutely gorgeous - woof! 🐶
Thats what I call a good learning curve for anybody who is interested in photography, no matter how advanced you are there is something in this video lesson for everybody. I see many photography video's on here and most are very enjoyable, but to see a somebody do a shoot from start to finish. I often wonder about some photographers whether they actually print any of their pictures at all, which seems a pointless exercise. Well done Simon, that was most enjoyable...
Much appreciated, Des. Thank you :-)
Very sorry to hear that Meg hasn't been well. So glad to see you both back. Thank you for the editing info. Beautiful image. Looking forward to more videos.
Many thanks :-)
Oh, there's Meg... And that photography guy:) Seriously, the best video I've seen in a long time! I've been in kind of a slump lately, but after this video it's of to my local woodland. Thank you for the inspiration:)
Much appreciated! Glad it helped :)

Very nice images and interesting post processing technique. I'm glad Meg is up and around and feeling better.
An enjoyable walk through the process. Nice to see Meg out and about. Rock on!
I started photographing a little over 60 years ago with film, of course. So, getting everything right in camera is ingrained in my thinking and work flow. The end result is better for this work flow.
Great video, Simon! 'Always interesting to hear other's discussions of composition and editing style & workflow.

Great idea with the drink bottles, you respect nature so much 👍🏽
Many thanks. It's the gift we need to give back to :-)
I’ve learned so much. Thank you. I needed a good tutorial video as I think I need to get back to basics. I wish I could find a tutorial this informative on the other types of photography I like. I’ll try some woodland shots very soon I think. Cheers.
Absolutely loved this Simon. That photograph is stunning, and you had me watching from start to finish.

Great watch thanks, some interesting tips in all of that.
Great video! I am glad to see your editing. Your videos just moved up to a new level. Keep up the good work.
Really excellent video and a great final image.
Another fantastic video. Editing videos are not boring though. I have always thought that there was some form of black magic in your editing so it is nice to see it from start to finish and what great results!
Thanks, Alistair. No black magic :) In fact, there was more editing in this shot than most of my images.
Great stuff Simon , very much enjoyed that . Nice to see that Meg is ok . Lovely print
Thank you, Andrew :-)
Great content. Love your channel. Greetings from British Columbia, Canada
Superb processing Simon, I liked the rotation trick and your use of negative clarity. The new texture slider is so powerful from Adobe. Also you're halo grads work very well in your post technique. You're right various forest greens are difficult to control and adjust correctly.
Great video simon, well presented.😊😊😊
Beautiful image Simon!
It was really interesting to see your thought process both in the field and while editing :)
Great video Simon! And another great example that you are a very skilled woodland photographer!
Many thanks, Tomas :-)
Great to see your process end to end Simon. Good to see Meg back on form too.
Watching this has finally helped me to decide on the way I want to go in photography,as I'm all over the place at the minute......finding the right subject hasnt being easy....trees have had always fascinated me,love shooting images of them.......woodlands ...now there's the answer...woodlands are all around me here in Northumberland...thanks simon...tm66images
Meg looks well
Really beautiful editing 😍
Thanks, a lot of good tips in this one.
Great to have both you and Meg back. Really interesting video. Always wondered how you managed to get that unique atmospheric look to your photos. Beautiful.
Thanks, Barry :-)
Thanks for a great explanation of how you put this comp together especially to consider aspect ratio and getting it right in camera, now I have even more to think about and experiment with!
Good to follow your workflow too Simon.
Thank you, Carl!!
Excellent thanks for sharing I personally love editing tutorials not being very techie I find them very very helpful indeed thank you I inspire to be half as good as you
Thanks for showing us your editing and printing process. I’d be up for an in depth video on printing. For example, I see that you print from Photoshop rather then Lightroom. Also interested in your method for output sharpening for print.
Yor processing of a already great Image, made it to a first class print. Great video Simon. Btw, nice to see you and Meg in the woods again.
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and seeing Meg :)
