That's a lot of work for one print . Photographers really have to jump through hoops now to sell prints . Nice to see someone still take pride in their work and deliver a premium product .
Really great information there. Thanks. Certainly shows that a print isn't just hitting the print button, but a work of art in itself that requires time and thought.
theres something really soothing about the way you talk during this video. maybe its because i really like how much thought and care you put into the presentation and delivery of your art.
Hi. I bought one of your prints about a year ago now. Pride of place on one of my walls. I did not appreciate until now how much work went into it. Which now makes it all the more special. So a big thank you to you, for the print and your inspiration.
The best explanation on printing I've found. Forwarded this to a friend who fell in love with your photos too. Not only calibrating the monitor but using the icc profile to make sure the paper matches your edit is that tricky bit that only makes sense once you think about it. Closest analog is treating a room to remove sound reflections so you can edit music without the room contributing its character.
I know I've said this before but I am totally inspired by your videos! I'm a hobbyist who dreams of being more. When I watch your videos I'm torn between my inadequacy and my desire to be better. Thank you for the great content!
I didn't know that you could get a personalized profile from the manufacturer, that was a very valuable information to me, thanks ! I loved how your video was structured and clear.
Was kind of "ho-hum" about watching this video because I do enjoy your on location videos so much. However, I must say that this was one of the most enjoyable of your videos I have watched (have watched pretty much all of them). Attention to detail, caring for your customer and passion are a heady and powerful mix. Wishing you every success.
This video prompted me to purchase a few prints. We are decorating our living spaces. That I enjoy all of these videos, can watch the process of capturing the images I love, get comments on the process of developing and printing, know that tons of care goes into the prints... makes me compelled to buy prints of those images that I truly love. Great video. Thank you for showing how much care you take in sharing your work.
My prints arrived safely in Austin right during the mail bomb scare. I’m taking them to the gallery on Monday to decide how they will hang on the wall. I’m so excited! The prints look great!
Thanks, Tom, wonderful video! I learned a great deal and it encourages me to do more printing, though I do quite a bit already. I don't sell my work, but I do give prints to people who admire my work and I think they really value it. What I like about this video is that you show all the steps and I think many people don't realize that a lot of work goes into getting a good print. Thanks again. Cheers, Bob
Absolutely smashing video. As someone who never really wanted to sell my work but is now rethinking that notion, it really helps to see how you have chosen to do so. Thank you for continuing to provide inspirational and valuable content.
Isn't it funny, photography has come such a very long way what with digital and how we view them, but still for some reason the print contains the the originality and honesty unlike any other view. Thank you Thomas.
Its amazing how careful you are...really, since the planning to go to shoot until the final pack it is possible to see how much love and effort you dedicate to photography. I have been watching your videos for a couple of years and I think this is my first feedback for any video/profile so far. I admire your way of express your art. Keep doing it you inspire a lot of people! My humble thank you to share it with us.
This video was an eye opener. Now I want to print my own photos. You have ultimate control over their quality and aren't trusting a print lab. The only downside is you cannot offer a wide myriad of choice as far as print size when you have your own printer, unless it is one of those big expensive ones like what Jared Polin has. I love your workflow, Thomas. It is an inspiration to any aspiring photographer.
Great presentation and info Thomas - I personally find that red is the most challenging colour to print accurately. Agree with another viewer who said smaller proofs are the best way to see how the colour is traveling. Your back story for each image is a nice touch.
Thank you for your professional presentation. I had hoped to discover some photoshop settings tips for making great prints. I loved seeing how beautifully you package your art. Thank you.
Just bought my first dedicated photo printer, Canon Pixma Pro 100, so this video was very helpful. Surprisingly noticeable difference between the stock paper color profile and the unique profile, will definitely be following your advice as a way to print the best quality images. Thanks for your help!
I do have the Canon (Pro 1000) printer since last summer. The whole year I was just figuring out which paper works for which of mine photographs. It really gave me a boost in understanding my photography. Especially with my analog photography. Thanks for the insights.
I'm just starting my journey into professional photography and your tips and videos are priceless resources of knowledge. Thank you for giving us this channel.
The amount of detail and attention you put into each print is just another thing that separates you as a pro from a novice. I imagine it's sometimes difficult for people to understand why a print costs a certain price but good for you for adhering to the saying, "you get what you pay for."
Ye you made it look luxurious by showing the whole process, I like the story behind the photo thats included, it makes you to look at the picture again and it brings up different feelings... Lovely
Not wishing to take anything away from yet another great, informative video. Please don’t let me be the only one who found this - (17:42) “To stop it, shaking around...” laugh out loud amusing! Great video Tom, thanks for all your great content.
TH-cam pointed me in the direction of your video (I had read about your work as a photographer previously) after spotting that I’d been browsing other videos on printers and printing. After years of struggling, and having moved from troublesome Epson to a Canon Pro, using a calibrated monitor I finally got to where images on screen came out pretty much like the screen except for some extra brightening. Yet I still found your video very useful, as well as interesting, particularly the paper manufacturers’ printer profiling service (hadn’t heard of that) and the presentation pre sale. So, thank you!
Hi Tom, another very calm, clear straightforward video, I just don't know how you do it!, maybe you could do another one outlining the logistical and strategic process , how you decide what to do and how you organise the time and resources to film and edit this sort of output?. The finished product seems so neat and effortless but I'm sure it isn't! I can't help wondering just how long it must take!. Well done anyway, Cheers, Richard.
It's funny because I'm on my second year of photography. This last year or so has been just a plethora of learning. Not only cameras and composition. I learned everything from quality of lenses to dynamic range, also the use of tools like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and other softwares. It was a lot to take in and I'm still working on mastering certain things like Photoshop and composites... but I must say recently getting into printing images from my Canon Pro 100 has not only taught me a whole new realm. But it is actually made me a better photographer. I look at composition kind of in a whole new light now. I found myself taking less pictures and focusing on getting better ones
Having watched you channel (subscribed) for some months, it's quite evident the passion, care, diligence, and attention you invest in your creative works. This video displays your unique approach. Were that more of us captured and replicated this comprehensive approach in the areas of our creative works; indeed, maybe other aspects of life. Thank you for sharing your gift! Looking forward to seeing more!
I have had a look at your site (again). The images are great, and seeing in this video, the care you take to print, prepare and ship them, I think your prices are totally fine. Thanks for showing us in all honesty what you are doing, down to the smallest detail.
I received the "star of the show print" for my birthday from my father because he knows that tom is my favorite photographer and I absolutely love the print. If you are on the fence, definitely go for it!
Thanks a few years later for this helpful video. Your thoughts about test prints reminded me of the hours I spent in the darkroom making small changes to dodging and burning a print.
Incredible work, Thomas. Keep going, loving your craft, and inspiring all of us. You just taught me so many things that I didn't know I didn't know. It's really wonderful to see someone take so much time and pride in their work, and seeing the behind-the-scenes really adds to the sense of craftmanship.
Hello Thomas, thank you for the great impressions in your videos. When I saw this video, I thought to myself. "Oh my god, what a effort, these pictures are probably priceless!" Then I looked at your shop and saw that you almost give away your pictures, for so much so little money. I know that's my opinion and others will not agree, but I do! Thumbs up Thomas!!
all great info here, what most people don't mention is how much the brightness has to come down on the monitor which even with a Datacolor profiler is a little bit hit and miss, and re ICC profiles, not all of printers are not covered, I have an Epson eco tank which is not even on the generic profile list so it's a lot more trial and error.
A great vlog for me Thomas, thanks. As someone navigating this path (on a much smaller scale and barely there demand) it was interesting to see you have a similar view...I think the idea of direct communication with the customer through the embossed cards and letters is a key part of the sale. Cheers!
Thanks for the video Thomas, you can see how much hard work, love and care goes into your prints, very impressive set up. Your customers are definitely getting their moneys worth.
What a great inspirational video, thx Thomas! You are doing lots of effort to your prints, your customers can expect great quality, not only from its arts.
Thomas could you do an overview video for people looking to get into printing? Recommended printers, running costs, calibration, soft proofing etc. Assuming I'm only printing my own work for myself, would a printer make sense/pay for itself at all? What minimum print volume is required to warrant your own printer? Thx!
THIS IS AWESOME information.. Are you also printing the larger prints that you have on your site; 60 x20, 23x9?? a third party printer?? Where do you get your supplies from for packaging?? ( box for flat prints, tubes, etc) Many many thanks!!
Wonderful and informative videos Thomas. You put so much work and care went into not only the actual shooting of the image, but the packaging and sending of them. The little information card and thank you card are indeed very nice touches and special to all who have them.
Cranking printing workflow video, lot's of great ideas. I was hoping to see in your links where you purchased the large shipping tubes from, along with the presentation boxes. If there is a chance you could share this, it would be appreciated. Keep up the great inspirational work 🙂
Thank you so much, Thomas! I'm not quite there with my photography yet, but I love looking ahead to my potential. Today, I struggled greatly trying to print out a photo that matched the one I see on my screen. One photo turned out pretty good considering my HP printer isn't that expensive. However, the second one I couldn't get any of the colors right at all! So frustrating. But you showed us how you also have to try many times to get images right and one you couldn't get. The "orange" one. I really appreciated your honesty and sincerity. Again, many thanks! PS I'm going to break down and by the Canon one level down from what you have.
A very interesting and useful explanation of your printing routine. Enjoyed it Tom as I do all your videos. Nice to see how much care you put into your product.
Great Video Thomas, and it shows you really care about the quality of prints, it inspires me to take printing more seriously and adding those little elements shows you care and you got some great ideas to elevate the experience for the person buying the print. also they will be looking at the print everyday of their lives so it has to be perfect and they must have to love it to hang it on their wall, they probably should love it more than you do, because they are purchasing it. Cheers and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing all this info! Would you also be willing to tell us a bit about the embossing you apply - what's in it, how you got the tool, and stuff like that?
Incredibile..! Well done. I would very much like to take a printing course explained by you because I'm trying to get experience with my Canon Pro 1000. Greetings from Italy
A great video. Your attention to detail is what sets you apart from others. I love that you take the photo, edit it, print it and ship it. All personally. Long may it continue. Very inspiring stuff as always. Cheers.
Thank you Thomas. This is a really good insight on the process of creating and selling prints. Something I'm trying to do and contemplating getting a printer and doing the whole process myself instead of using a print company. This really helps!!
Very nice video Thomas, thank you. I find it very interesting how some folks in their comment are kind of freaking out over the "favorite kid" remark. Hey, I have 4 and believe me, we all do have a favorite whether we admit it or not. And no, we should never admit who that favorite is, but love them all the same.
Brilliant video. Never thought I could learn so much in a span of 20 minutes. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make such amazing content.
Very informative but I wanted to know if you have a video about the printer you use, am interested as I at the first stage being a graphic designer and wanted to know what type of printers you have used in the past etc, thanks 🙏🏼

Fantastic video ! been trying to get the hang of printing my own work for a while but I’m still miles away from anything I’m happy with coming out the end of the printer, think it’s just trial and error!
Wait, did you just get me to watch a 20 minute ad by being informative, interesting and helpful? Not even mad that's amazing
The amount of care and pride you take in your work is humbling.
Hard to thank you enough for a perfect demonstration of how a real artist "makes" his work. Just wonderful...every little consideration you make.
QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY - Mr. Heaton - You're a rare breed. EXCELLENT.

"The most challenging thing is signing it." = This is a GOOD problem to have!
Thanks for sharing this process. Many blessings!
OH MY GOD! I've been waiting for this video. THANK YOU! Very very very helpful. I did not know it existed. Glad to have stumbled on it.
This video has changed my photography life. I'm copying the thank you note idea! Thank you for sharing!

One of the best videos related to Photography!! You are truly amazing Thomas!!
So helpful. Printing is one of my biggest photography challenges. Thanks Thomas.
Excellent video. I really respect your attention to detail and consideration of what those touches will mean to the people purchasing your images.
Ye you made it look luxurious by showing the whole process, I like the story behind the photo thats included, it makes you to look at the picture again and it brings up different feelings... Lovely
So nice that you take such pride in your work and sell such a quality product

Great video Tom, thanks for all your great content.
Thank you Thomas. This video is very timely for me as I wrestle with the complexities of printing.
There's such a natural consistence between your pictures, your workflow and final product. Thanks for sharing! :)

Been watching your videos from some time now. The work ethic that you must have to accomplish all the things that you do, is inspiring. Thank you!
Wow! With all that thought and care that goes into each print I don't think you charge enough Tom. They are worth way more than that.
Fantastic information! Thank you for sharing. Could you please give a link to the plastic protective wallets if it's possible? Thank you!
From A to Z Mr. Heaton continues to deliver compelling content. Thank you!!

Thomas, thank you so much - this is the most comprehensive and easy to understand to overview on printing that I’ve seen - love your work!!!!
Your pride and professional approach to your work shines through in this vid 🤟

You have a knack of posting videos about the things I'm wondering about. Highly appreciated and thanks for all the tips.
I appreciate that you are honest about where you got ideas from and give credit. Good Man! Your videos are great too!
You're simply amazing man, you value your photo like your prints so much and of course your costumer service is fantastic.
Great video! It’s cheered my last 2 days binge watching your videos whilst off sick from work....thank you!
Great to see your workflow and pick up some tips too. Especially the use of different papers. Thanks Tom.

Would love to hear about your approach to sharpening for print. I've seen a ton of different ways out there.
Thoroughly enjoyable, interesting, and informative video. Thank you Thomas.
Thanks for the video Thomas, you can see how much hard work, love and care goes into your prints, very impressive set up. Your customers are definitely getting their moneys worth.
What a great inspirational video, thx Thomas!

A very interesting and useful explanation of your printing routine. Enjoyed it Tom as I do all your videos. Nice to see how much care you put into your product.

Fantastic video Thomas. Love the whole process with so much care to detail. Very impressed.
Fascinating insight into all the care and attention put into these!
Canon need to wake up to you Thomas!
Another informative video, thanks for sharing your work flow.
Have you tried Moab Slickrock Metallic Pearl? Stunning prints
For the certificate of authenticity, any recommendations on where to find templates and a good embosser?
This is super insightful. Thanks!
Would you consider doing a similar video about how you make your calendars?
A fascinating insight into how printing should be done. Many thanks for this Tom.👌
Always a pleasure & appreciated for your help, information & approach to the subject matter..
I love how open you are, so refreshing. Thank you
Brilliant video. Never thought I could learn so much in a span of 20 minutes. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make such amazing content.
Amazing video Thomas Heaton.. Hats off to you for your work... love your work and your videos..
Very informative but I wanted to know if you have a video about the printer you use, am interested as I at the first stage being a graphic designer and wanted to know what type of printers you have used in the past etc, thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you! I never print any of my photos...and was thinking about it recently...and here you are reading my mind giving me amazing advice as usual.
I would still like to know more about the tracing paper, what paper it was, how you printed on it. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this. I don't print my own images, but it was nice to hear about your process for signing and packaging your prints. Over time I've slowly been making more clear decisions on how to handle these aspects of the distribution cycle. It's great that you're starting to balance between photo shoot and other process type videos.
You are doing such a great job! Those prints are beautiful, and in good hands. Well done.
Fantastic video ! been trying to get the hang of printing my own work for a while but I’m still miles away from anything I’m happy with coming out the end of the printer, think it’s just trial and error!
