Dumb Guy Accidentally Made A Bestseller (Free Plan)

  • This is the true story of how I plagarized a danish design icon in my pursuit of becoming a woodworking millionaire fast. It was ‪@dainermade‬ who got me started in the first place, kind of by accident. He appears in the video, and I kind of throws him under the bus, but I promise, it's all for good fun. We're the best of friends, at least the last time i checked. Go check him out at ‪@dainermade‬ .
LEAKED! Should you feel inspired to pursue the building of this lamp, then download the plans for free or with a little donation here: jespermakes.com
Check out the xTool P2 laser I'm using here: jespermakes.com/xtool
Other tools in my workshop: jespermakes.com/tools
I'm using the track Cereal Killa with permission from the composer @BlueWednesday . Thanks Gustav.
I'm using a short clip from ‪@neemantools‬ brilliant video • The Birth Of A Dugout ...
Watch Jesper Makes origin story here: • This Video Will Change...
About the title "Plagiarism and woodworking" and the amount in the thumbnail: Firstly I feel like I plagiarised the danish design lamp "The Artichoke" by Poul Henningsen. There are also many talented lamp designers selling their designs on Etsy, and also many people copying those designs. The amount on the thumbnail is taken from a lamp being sold on Etsy. There are many people making a living from selling different designer lamps, and if you're creative, feel free to download my design and get going making a lamp business.
I mention some of my maker friends in the video, that is NOT the complete list, and neither is this one, but go theck out these awesome makers too: ‪@FixitFingers‬ ‪@TheSwedishMaker‬ ‪@wittworks‬ ‪@AndrewSzeto‬ ‪@MorleyKert‬ ‪@MakeWithMiles‬ ‪@BlacktailStudio‬ ‪@Lincolnstww‬ ‪@Advoko‬ and many others.
    Shoutout to ‪@rubiomonocoatscandinavia‬ and ‪@xToollaser‬ .

Hi, it's gona be a longer one... but it's my first comment so be patient with me :) and I'll still try to make it short. Maybe You are "the world's worst milionair in trainig"... but, the content you make, is a different univers, that has influenced me. Not only in the truth about the amount of drinking coffee... since I started, I'm brewing my coffee in 4 different ways... not at onec... does'nt mastter... I like coffee... but I like wood. But far more important was the video "New Life" posted 4 month's ago...it made me realize a lot of things. For most I love my kid's and wife... but in my 39 years of life, I never did something for me, or realised any of my goals. It would be a long story, but simply to put it, belive, me... as a healing workaholic, I only made what was expected of me. And in the last Year, Mark and Your channel made my heart work a bit different, it gave me some lil amount of dopamine... a belife I cane do something I like. And it's hard... I mean, I do it only at night's in my garage, where the temperature is slightly higher the that outside, and haveing a stray cat-companion. But I like it. Since the 3 months I started I made maybe 3 small project's. But they are my scale of succes, and a proof I finaly can creat something with my own hand's, and not hear the evel whisper in the back of my head: "... still you owe it to..."... So maybe now, since the crisys continues, and my worke place is in danger, I'll try to learn as much as possible to learn the idea of "joining peaces of wood to other peaces of wood"... and create. This video and Your thout's gave me the power and will to go in my shops today - after a week's break - and get motivated. And I'll start by organizeing my 16m2 meters of workaspace and finaly build my workbench.. gonna make pictures and record it... dont know if I ever post it enywere or use it... but I'll try and learn... hope to feel some more dopamine in the future.. Thank You Jesper and wish You all the best in the started 2024. Hope my 40th year on this planet will allowe me to be a woodworker.

Hey, thanks for taking the time for such a heartfelt comment. It's amazing to hear how my channel and, of course, coffee, have positively impacted you. Keep brewing both coffee and creativity! ☕🛠️

Nicely said! You too seem to be 'on the level' in terms of being and recognizing the magnificence that resides in humans. I can honestly say that I too have been moved by both these inspirational and capable men and am for the first time in a LONG time excited about what my future can potentially look like in terms of finding my own 'niche' in this beautiful world called woodworking! I've just recently lost my job and have been in a bit of a funk due to lack of purpose and direction at the ripe old age of 43. I can't possibly describe the feeling I've got right now thanks to Jesper, Mark and yourself. Thanks for sharing the kind words and genuine sentiments. If you have a Dremel type tool, you can use a router tip to cut things out the way these CNC and box laser cutters do. Takes longer, your hand gets shaky from the vibration. And, the level of satisfaction from making it by hand is off the charts. Easier than crochet, especially easier than crocheted i-cord and Tunisian crochet. You got this! 👍

Many libraries have Maker Spaces where you can learn to use 3d printers, sewing machines, and some even have these laser cutters. I work at a school, so have access to a laser cutter there, as well (as long as I provide the materials). Perhaps there is some sort of club or other maker space in your area?

COOL!!! Love the Lamp!!! I used to build and design furniture/equipment for severely disabled kids, only because what they sold in catalogs were so expensive, and we’d look at some of the things and say, we could do that. I worked in a school district and budgets were always tight for certain programs. We didn’t make anything fancy, and used regular plywood for a time, after we’d gotten a little better at some of the projects we undertook, we moved up to birch. It was always fun creating, and doing things that helped kids with their challenges. And glad to say, never sawed off a finger, though I did staple my thumb. Ouch.

I’ve been a lighting designer for 30 years, I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been asked to copy a Poulsen artichoke fixture. Making one for yourself will probably go unnoticed by the Louis Poulsen foundation, selling them for a while might work out for you too. Be prepared for the cease and desist letter. Be prepared for the copyright lawsuit. It’s not a matter of “if” it’s a matter of “when” they go after you.

Copyright is just for words, songs, etc. To own the rights to design you need to be granted a patent design application by the Patent office. My last video kinda tanked after sinking another 100+ hrs into it between the build and the edit and my next one doesn’t quite have a story yet. You should increase the reflectivity of the lower / inside face of the wood, to allow the light to escape the shade. You can do this either by the design, such as metallic paint on the inside, or just by applying a high gloss coating on the inner faces. Gloss contrasts also make good design features, so a satin or matte exterior would work well with this.

Hi Jesper from Vancouver Island Canada. I have watched many of your videos, some several times now. Simply amazing pieces of art you have compiled here. Just outstanding! Bravo!! I am a newbie content creator. I am really enjoying the process of all the joy and frustration I get from learning how to make videos, and hopefully I learn through trial and error on how to make each one more engaging, entertaining and fun to watch. The thing that engages me about your content is it's not about the item you are making, you weave an entertaining storyline into your videos. The item you are working on, or building, almost seems secondary to your story telling. This is where I think I need some advice and some help to reach a new level with my videos. I'm wondering... I'd like to learn more about how to tell a story, or at least get better at it, like you do so well! Is there any course on skill share, or do you have any suggestions, or advice that could help me with story telling? Thanks Jesper and looking forward to more of your content, Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for the kind words! Storytelling is indeed a key part of engaging content. My advice is to focus on what interests you most about your projects and try to convey that passion to your audience. As for courses, there are many on Skillshare and TH-cam about storytelling and video production. Keep experimenting and learning, and you'll find your unique voice. Good luck with your journey in content creation!

While I was kid, I was impressed by the woodwork I would see in the DIY monthly magazine my father was buying.
I always wanted to do something like that, but my father strangely enough wouldn't allow me to use his tools, and later on my life simply went in totally different way.
But well, life is sometimes quite strange, and after almost forty years, I've met a guy who has a kind of small workshop which he has abandoned, with all kinds of different projects he started and never finished. I saw that as a kind of opportunity to finally realize that childhood dream I had, to build things on my own, and also to motivate my new friend to get back on track with work.
And so, we've agreed to start with some smaller projects and see where will it lead us.

I haven't seen anybody on woodworking YT do it but maybe this design would look even better if coated with something reflective and monochrome, like metallic paint, or a vividly coloured glossy lacquer (primary colors would work best: red blue yellow, white/black). Also, what if the 'petals' were longer and split at the end, like maple seeds or a mustache, not exactly that but in an organic way? I think it would look even more elaborate and cool.

    Jesper...
The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. If a laser doesn't point straight down at the work piece then there is a danger of a reflection into the shop and all kind of James Bond private parts jeopardy. Laser cut things have this one annoying feature that they have black crisp right angled edges and have a flat 2D feel. The laser cutter that can make an angled cut would be a game changer and add a way to maybe chemically remove the charring and then the results would be much more unique and interesting... but that is one for your sponsors to think about...
Your videos and stories are the best, my heart leaps when I see a new one. The condensation down to "find your piece of wood" is beautiful and insightful and inspiring.

A lot of templates are small and thin so you could offer a service to quilters and ask them to supply you with dimensions and a sketch of the block or a picture dor an appliqueed block. A+ work, as usual.
Also, sheer brillance with the emoji lasered onto the one lamp 'petal' you show at the very end.
I have been experimenting with pallets I picked at my place of work, for fixtures and shop 'furniture' (clamp hanging racks, router sled and table, dust collection boxes, etc). I assume your Euro pallets are just pine? I haven't noticed any special pre-treatment you have made to them before the Rubio Monocoat 2C oil treatment. I want to give them a stain, but I rarely have good luck with traditional oil-based stains on pine. My pallets are United States and Japan (which often uses North American-sourced pine/fir) sourced.
    Keep it up!

The lamp is beautiful. I have become such a fan of your work and videos. Your story telling ability is second to none, but what I really appreciate is your self deprecating sense of humor (oh and the guest drop ins from some of my other favorite makers is awesome as well). Thank you, I look forward to future videos.

Larry, thanks so much for your support! I'm glad my storytelling and sense of humor resonate with you. The guest appearances are always a fun addition. More videos are on the way!

Thank you Jesper. It's been a tough couple of months with study and life, and today I'm stressed to the gills with my last assignment due on Friday. Your videos always make me laugh. Thank heaven you started with what you had and shared your journey. May you keep evolving, but never change ♥

Hi 👋, that was a great idea, you have definitely seen the light 💡, 😂, what about shaping and texturing them, I think you might need a CNC ROUTER machine, that can do curved work, your Lampside still looks very nice great project, I thought I had seen something where are you could take an image for a picture and then scale it and drawing and then cutting the pieces on your laser, look forward to seeing your next project,

Hey Phil, thanks for the suggestion! A CNC router is definitely on the wishlist. It's all about evolving and experimenting with new techniques. Stay tuned for more projects!

Always makes my day, when a video from Jesper Makes pops up. Both you and Mark always give great advice, and the best advice is "Just Start". Personally, I don't think your first million is that far away. Keep at it, Jesper. 🇦🇺🇩🇰👍☕
