      Absolutely!! When I first subscribed I was worried it was all going to be wood/resin carvings of animals. And don't get me wrong I still watched them all, and.i will continue to, but as an artist myself, I love the use of new mediums in forms they normally don't take. Mainly the tire sculptures! I love multimedium art, and one of my favorite pieces I've done is actually a very large American flag I made from shiny new and old oxidized US pennies. Because how often do you see pennies framed on a wall?

    A couple of things that would help tremendously with the vibration on the lathe: having it on a more substantial base the fact that there's an open space under the table allows the amount of vibration to increase over time. But the main issue is it doesn't have a speed control! That would scare the crap out of me! Reducing or increasing the speed can have a huge effect on the amount of vibration.

    • @BMSculptures
      @BMSculptures  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Agreed. If I intend to do. more of this I think I will invest in a proper setup and tool.

    • @syninys100
      @syninys100 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@BMSculptures That lathe _does_ have some (rudmentary) speed control. @7:35 we can see a stepped pulley set up. If you change the pulley that the belt is on, then it will change the speed that the spindle turns at. That one looks like it has only 4 settings, and such systems are a pain to actually change, but it does have some degree of adjustment. The setting it's on at that timestamp is '3 of 4' - I'm not sure if that's the second fastest or second slowest, but unless you changed that, then there potentially was either one or two steps slower that that lathe could have gone.
      You may well have used that (and it didn't make the edit; which would make sense, it's not a lathe how to after all!), but thought I add that for others that might be in a similar situation.

      Honestly the blank may have been off centered a bit too. Which isn’t a huge problem if it’s in the chuck correctly and you work it down quickly. But if he was going to do a lot of projects on the lathe. Too many off centered projects can put stress on the chuck which is no bueno.

    I work on the lathe a lot making pens and some other things. It is amazing to watch how others go through their process. People are amazed when they ask how I come up with the shape and material for a pen and I tell them that when I pick up a piece, I have to see a pen in it or it goes back in the pile until I get the right pen for it.
    I once started to make a large egg out of a root burl, but halfway through, it became an acorn. lol The shape just fit the wood much better. The pens are the same, as it "evolves" and the grain is exposed, sometimes the shape changes.

    for the shark, split the log lengthways glue it on either side of one of the slabs then you have more room for all the fins as they follow the lateral line, all you have left is the dorsal fin and cordial fin ( big one at the back depending on species)

    I love your TALENT! Your ability to create these amazing animals (and more.) The medium- epoxy or just wood- is secondary. You're amazing, Blake!

    I understand your fears when it comes to lath work.
    Back in the 60s a highschool student had glued up some wood to turn into a bowl.
    He too had misgivings and had put on a motorcycle helmet.
    But to no avail, the pieces of wood he'd glued together came apart at one point.
    Part of this came apart and sliced through the helmet and the top of his skull. It was said that the teacher lost it and tried scooping up the boy's brains and tried to put them back in.
    It affected him so bad, he ceased teaching woodshop and as far as I know never went into that area of the school ever again.
    So you're standing back and watching it vibrate is very understandable.

    I absolutely love the wood/epoxy sculptures, so that would be my preference, but I will not shy away from pure wood sculptures either.

    I’m gonna go slab for the great white shark, I don’t think you’ll be as limited on size. The trophy turned out beautiful dude! Great job as always. Can’t wait until your next video. Hope all is well with you and your family. God Bless.

    I like all the different videos but if pressed I’m most enamoured by your wood sculptures. I really loved the dinosaur but I also loved your female form and the wolf.

    Great Trophy. Just a little advice when turning, In general always turn uphill not down as your friend advised. Where possible you should always turn in the direction of supported grain.

    This one-of-a-kind trophy is something every guy's club needs. My father played pool with his mates every week ("The Boys' Night Out" eh, it stuck). Their trophy was an autographed framed photo of Minnesota Fats, and on the back the victor put their name and the year they won the tournament (in light pencil), and got to hang it up in their 'mancave' so long as they kept winning. The day I played pool well-enough to compete with them, my father got me my own pool cue as a sign of recognition and it's my most prized possession. The photograph was buried with my father as it was his originally.
