    Thank you. I consider myself as an advanced learner but for me, the most interesting pieces of information were the usage of the Past Continuous 1. to set the scenery in the story and 2. with "always" to describe annoying habits.

    Can we use the past continuous to talk about the duration of an action that may have been incomplete?
    Yesterday evening, I was building this model wooden ship for forty minutes.
    I think "built" - the past simple is wrong here because it means that it was completed.

    Hi sir, I watched most of your video lessons and I liked it. It is very helpful to me to improve my English grammar .At present I am studying in Bolton college English Level 1. Actually I come from India two years ago on spouse visa and I am living in the UK since December 2012. My English writing skill is little bit weak that's why I am not enrol in level 2 English .My question is that I am still don't understand British pronunciation so when I go to shopping I Have very difficulty to understand British English because different people use different slang and speak very fast so everything goes above my head so what I have to do so I can understand English well even if people speak so fast. You speak very well in your video lesson and I understand well. Thank you very much sir.

      Kalpana Dakoria You just need to practise. Try to make some friends with English natives and to speak with them as often as possible. It is easier in small groups. Ask them to correct your biggest mistakes but not every single mistake you make so that you have the chance to speak without being interrupted. You will improve, don't worry. Good luck. :)

      Hello and thanks for the comment and question.
      No we cannot say that.
      There is another possible sentence that I did not mention in this video. We can also say: "When you were calling me, I was walking to the train station." -> Here we are describing 2 continuous actions which are both happening at the same time, in parallel.

    Dear prof: ,
    I wonder If I might ask you a question.
    Topic:
    The past continuous subjunctive can be used in the if-clause of a sentence in the second conditional to express an unreal action in the present which is imagined as continuous:
    A) If it wasn't raining, we would have lunch outside. (it is raining)
    B) is correct If I said:
    If it weren't raining, we....
    By the way : May I use it / She he + were + ing ( past subjunctive)

    Excellent Mr. Andrew, yet, there's a doubt I have with one sentence from an excercise where you have to pick the correct form of the verb;
    "A Police car (passed/was passing) us on the motorway when we (did/were doing) 80 miles per hour".
    Is the correct answer: "A Police car passed us on the motorway when we were doing 80 miles per hour"?, could you clarify this one doubt for me, please?. Thank you.
    Patricia

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes, there is more than one possible grammatically correct way of expressing something. It depends on the context and what aspect of an event we are emphasising. But if it is an exercise on the past continuous with the past simple:
      "A Police car passed us on the motorway when we were doing 80 miles per hour" is probably the best (most appropriate answer)
      Here is a tip for you. When there are 2 actions in the past, identify the relative length of both actions. We normally use a continuous tense for the longer action and a simple tense for the shorter action. In the example, the longer action is you driving too fast and the shorter action is the police car passing you. (You are already driving at 80 mph *before* the police car passes and probably continue for few seconds after), so the passing of the police car happens in the middle of the other action.
      However, the sentence would be grammatically better if it was "*while* we were doing 80 mph. But it is acceptable and common to use "when" +ing form.
      Andrew

    Hi Andrew, I watch your video regularly. I ll grateful if you could help. For question form of past continuous instead of asking
    'What was he doing when when I called him?'
    Auxiliary verb+ subject+ main verb ?
    Can we say
    'What he was doing when I called him?'
    If not, then kindly give brief description. I m waiting for your reply Andrew.
    Thank you.
    Mehnaz.

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mehnaz Hashmi Hello and thanks for the comment and question.
      If we are asking a *question* with "what", then you must follow the form I explain in the video:
      What + Auxiliary verb+ subject+ main verb
      Example: "What was he doing?"
      But if we are making an *affirmative* statement with "what", then it is possible to follow this form:
      What + subject + auxiliary verb + main verb
      Example: I don't know what he was doing. (notice that this is the affirmative form and so there is no question mark at the end)
      Best wishes,
      Andrew
