Excellent methodical video with a great result. Cuts better than the new one I bought at the hardware store last year.

I was given a box full of old vtg Disston and Sandvik hand saws to restore. Just got into vtg axe and took restoration so no idea what any of the seals or symbols mean but I do love the modern Japanese stuff but nothing cuts like old American Hand saws!

What luck! I agree the western saws cut wonderfully. They are absolutely worth restoring and using often

When you're hammering metal the side you are hammering on stretches (using a hard hammer), so you should put the bulbuous curve side down and tap around in the "bowl" shaped depression part, which will stretch it and make the sides "equal" and flat.

You are never going to get the tension right in that plate, it's basically unfixable. Best option is to just buy another plate, they are usually 20-30$, teeth already cut.

I’m not sure I follow about the tension, but it does cut straight enough for my needs. Agreed it will never be perfect, though, and for a saw this old that’s a shame.
