I must have sung this Mozart aria dozens of time (Tokyo, Los Angeles City College, Penang (Malaysia), Islamabad (American Centre), etc… “Cherubino, alla Vitoria, alla Gloria Militar!!!”…
When I first heard Mozart's 'Non Piú Andrai' from the Marriage of Figaro, I thought I would use it for a march tune. And look what I found here...the tune I was going to use. I'm glad someone had the idea and utilised it. You can hear that it isn't a particularly British tune; the composition still holds true to the sentiment of Non Piú Andrai.
Spoiler Alert: This song was made by a German - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Don't believe? Check Le Nozze di Figaro aria No 8: Non Piu Andrai. (ending part)
+Fatmos0010's Realm he was born in Salzburg, which is now in Austria. At the time it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Definitely not German since Germany didn't exist until 1815.
Michael Evans The French Beaumarchais is at the origin of everything, it is him who invented the play Le Mariage de Figaro which provided the inspiration to Mozart for his opera.
It was composed by Mozart when he was a child during his visit to London as a slow march for the coldstream guard and was later incorporated into the opera
Reuben Braganza, Mozart wrote it as a child, when he visited he Royal Court and stayed at St James's Palace. In the morning he saw the changing of the guards in the courtyard below and dashed off a little march, which he presented to the Captain of the Coldstream Guards. It became their regimental slow march. Thirty years later the Opera Figaro was played in England for the first time, and the opera-goers recognised he regimental march. With no such thing as radio to broadcast music, every new tune of any quality, quickly became known to those who heard it. The words that people sang to this march were Oh, the blacksmith's a fine sturdy fellow! Hard his hand, but his heart's true and mellow. See him stand there, his huge bellows blowing, With his strong brawny arms free and bare. See the fire in the furnace a glowing; Bright its sparkle and flash, loud its roar. Blow the fire, stir the coals, heaping more on; Till the iron's all aglow, let it roar on! While the smith high his hammer's a-swinging, Fi'ry sparks fall in show'rs all around. And the sledge on the anvil is ringing; Fills the air with its clanging sound. Let the blows, strong and sure, quickly falling, Haste the work, for the iron fast is cooling. Oh, the smith he's a fine sturdy fellow! Bravely working from morning till night; Hard his hand, but his heart's true and mellow; Like his anvil, he stands for the right.
Well, it is a marvellous tune to march to. That, Scipio, and the Artillery slow march. Been round the square in front of Old College at Sandhurst many times to it. - Saturday's Adjutant's Parade and of course Sovereigns.
My dad was a coldstream guardsman, we played this at his funeral, never felt so proud when his coffin was brought in to this, second to none

This is a rather energetic tune for a slow march.
Play it slower.
A jolly tune
As this is a regimental slow march I myaelf would use the terms 'stately' and with 'pomp' but I understand exactly what you're getting at.
I find that a lot on you tube, Scipio , Duke of York, if it is the official march, why would it be in slow time?
This song is also the Official March of the Canadian Governor General's Foot Guards based in Ottawa.

Michael Evans So do not joke with the French knowing that without them this march would not exist 😉
Michael Evans The english are also so laughable to be proud of things they did not create
Michael Evans either you're not very clever or you have not read the first comment
it best of the five foot guards slow marches. the Scots guards have the best quick
