  • Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt discusses the biggest games and storylines from Week 13 of the College Football season. Joel opens with his main takeaways from calling the Big Noon matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines. Joel believes Jim Harbaugh has been building up to this point since 2018, and Saturday’s game was an example that proves the gap between the two programs has closed. Then, Joel shares his thoughts on the fallout from Ohio State’s loss. Next, Joel discusses USC’s win over Notre Dame and another really impressive performance by USC QB Caleb Williams. Finally, Joel shares his thoughts on Nebraska’s hire of Matt Rhule to become their next Head Coach as well as Wisconsin’s hire of Luke Fickell.

    The biggest fact that everyone overlooks.....Michigan has been dominating the second half all year long. Their halftime adjustments have been phenomenal. They have outscored their opponents in the second half something like 140 - 20......

      I only hear Michigan fans saying it to be honest. But other than Illinois, you have to go back to the Iowa game to find a team that scored more than 3 pts in the 2nd half vs Michigan. They are WILDLY good in the 2nd half.
      2nd half points scored by:
      Indiana: 0
      Penn State: 3
      Michigan State: 0
      Rutgers: 0
      Nebraska: 0
      Ohio State: 3

    If the cfp committee puts Ohio state in there, it would almost be the equivalent of Nebraska backing into the national championship game 20-odd years ago after getting destroyed by Colorado. Not entirely, but similar in the way that Michigan dominated Ohio state.

  • @TruthSeaker
    @TruthSeaker ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ironically, I think that Blake Corum being injured might have won this game for Michigan. If he had been healthy, Michigan would have relied on their bread-and-butter, and Ohio State was clearly stacking against the run. With Corum out, Michigan had to rely more heavily on JJ's arm, and that completely threw Ohio State off balance. If Michigan wants to truly be elite, I think they need to have a more balanced attack that leverages both run and pass. Balance Corum with JJ's arm and they would be unstoppable.

  • @mennig182
    @mennig182 ปีที่แล้ว

    If Blake Corum doesn’t get hurt, he’s got just as good of a chance at winning the Heisman as Williams. Corum has 1,450 yds rushing and 19 total TD’s. If he finishes the Illinois game and plays against OSU, he easily has 1,600+ yards and 20+ TD’s.

    Joel Klatt is the smartest, best informed, most articulate, and fairest analyst in college football today. This program, on November 28, demonstrates how much experience, knowledge, and sheer informational abundance he brings to his work. His research is thorough, his perspective balanced, his judgment reasonable and discerning. He doesn't hem and haw. He doesn't stumble over his words. And he doesn't waste them, either. Every sentence is worth listening to. Thank you, sir, for your hard and excellent work. (Now, can you help the Buffs understand what *they* need to do to become a top program again?)

    Everyone saying OSU will not make it, but if TCU or USC loses, think the committee might put them in. USC is playing the team that beat them and TCU on beat KSU by 10 in Fort Worth. KSU is only a 3 loss team.

    I think Blake Corrum had a chance at the Heisman, but I think as soon as he got injured and couldn't play @ OSU that chance is gone. I think he would have needed to been lights out against osu and in the playoffs. He isn't a qb, but you can't tell me that if he put up 150+ against osu, georgia and whoever they played first round in the playoffs, that his stock wouldn't go up. I don't think he has a chance this year now

    this now is reminding me of when clemson finally got over the hump against florida state. when they finally did they have went on an incredible run. not saying michigan is going to do that but what i am saying is they couldnt beat ohio state for years until last year and now they look better and the product on the field shows it. i can see them winning at least one more while ohio state recruits big defensive tackles to line up against that offensive line. i say one more year because that michigan qb is there for at least one more year. i dont see ohio state beating them and defensive tackles usually take two years to build up their bodies to play that position in college coming out of high school.

    Your deep take on what Harbaugh did to turn Michigan around is spot on and it can't be overstated. The fact that he has gone against what everyone thought Michigan needed and instead made them into what they are. For a very, very long time Michigan had no real identity. In the 80s and 90s they were so dominant over Ohio State because they had an identity and they came into The Game with balls every time no matter their record. That's why in 95 and 96 they beat back to back ranked #2 OSU teams that were incredibly talented (Michigan was ranked 18th and 21st iirc). Those teams understood that, while their season was middling, it can all be resolved by winning this one game.
    Braylon Edwards talked earlier in the week how there are no excuses for losing just because a guy is injured (Corum). Players have to step up. And literally the entire team stepped up. Sanristil's PBU and just play in general, the O line smashing in the second half, Edwards playing with a broken thumb and taking hand-offs in his opposite hand and still looking like a track star, CB torching the secondary all over the field, and JJ stepping up into the role he was expected to be all year. Great players, when given the chance, show their greatness.
    This didn't feel like a rivalry for a long time. Now it's back again. This rivalry has always gone in streaks. Seems like a new one has started.

    • @ethanweeter2732
      @ethanweeter2732 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First of all congratulations to the University of Michigan from a Buckeye fan. They played to win and did so. By far the better team Saturday.
    TOSU played to not lose. Zero adjustments by Ryan Day and Jim Knolls in the 2nd half. Kept trying to run the screen even when it was clearly not working and at one point almost picked (I wish it was so I could of just left early). At times it honestly looked like the play calling was for when they were winning and they didn't have a playbook if they were losing.
    On to next year. I'll watch whatever bowl they get to see next year's starters because you know CJ and them aren't going to play. They do not deserve to get a spot after Saturday. And also, CJs comments after the game about how "one game doesn't define us" I'm sorry, when you go to one of these two great programs, it does. Other than Alabama, OSU has basically been the best, most consistently successful program in CFB for the last 20 years.

    While I really like them, I was disappointed in some of the commentary in during this game. Joel did not really understand Michigan's strategy at the end of the first half when they were conservative because they did not want to give the ball back to OSU and were happy being only 3 points down with the ball to start the 3rd (get a first down and run the clock down unless there was something they could get with low risk). Also, Gus and Joel did not really give Michigan's defense any hype pregame, like they did for the "world famous OSU offense". In retrospect, I liked seeing this defensive analysis. Keep in mind they were missing their best player on defense, Mike Morris.

  • @brianbruce3635

    Great commentary. I agree it's crazy talk to suggest Day be fired. That comes from a place of arrogance and birthright mentality. Part of that mentality has bled into the program though and Michigan has straight up outworked a much higher ranked program from a star level. Is that not on the coaches to have gotten routed at home given the recruiting difference? Can you imagine this game if Michigan had OSU receivers? Watch out if JJ starts hitting these long balls and get some 4 and 5 star WR's.

    If you win the line of scrimmage, you have a very good chance of beating your opponent. This is true at every level of football. It’s the most important aspect of the game aside from having a competent quarterback as he is the one who touches the ball and makes decisions every single play.

    Ohio State is definitely slipping, Joel. They have wasted probably the top talent in all of football the past 2 years. And Michigan, who has consistently ranked far lower in recruiting rankings, has dominated them back to back. If that's not a coaching and organization issue, than I'm not sure what is.

    • @LetsPlayPC

      They have definitely outrecruited Michigan, but the Wolverines have consistently had at least Top 15 classes and they've had pretty good retention since 2019. Add in the best center in the country (Oluwatimi) as a transfer and Michigan has some pretty good talent. Not as much as OSU, but it's a manageable gap. About the same as the gap between UM and MSU over the years -- but MSU still managed to beat us quite a bit.

      I think you're missing his point. He's saying don't measure whether they are slipping by results against Michigan. If you look at the rest of what Ohio State has done, that level is still very high. They dominated almost everyone they played and were still 11-0. I.e. if they were 9-2 going into the Michigan game then you have a point, but sometimes you stay just as good as you ever were, but other teams just get better.

    Joe even though sometimes I don’t like what you have to say, I will say your positions are very well thought out! A few years ago I was hoping Michigan would add you as an analyst for the team (still think it would be good for them). I agree this year there is NO DOMINANT TEAM..last year Michigan had a defense with loads of star power and this year not really yet the defense is great! I will say that JJ STILL has a lot of growing to do..he still either over throws and under throws a lot of the vertical passes (saw a lot on Saturday). Yes he had some hook ups but to me it seemed more like the WR’s we’re going back for the ball. He also throws behind or above on the out routes consistently..if he can polish up just a little bit or have a great game against TCU or Georgia (specially) then we have something. I also think we have something that we haven’t had in ages..a true top notch DC in minter. He has/can make changes VERY QUICKLY. Stats show that Michigan is the BEST team in CF AFTER HALFTIME. This is Minter.. he just hope we can keep Sherrone (he needs to get better and more consistent and keep Minter. If we can keep those 2 for 2-3 more years Michigan should be able to stay here and improve..another issue Michigan has to work out ASAP is the NIL or the talent GAP with get much much larger
