After 3 years of development, AEW FIGHT FOREVER was released in JUNE 2023. Despite being the defacto spiritual successor to WWF NO MERCY, it has since fall into obscurity. In this video I discussed why a game that had potential to be in the alternate to WWE 2K ending up buried after 6 MONTHS.

When people today refer to N64 wrestling games as arcade it reveals alot. It was actually the Smackdown games on PS that were the arcade type. The No Mercy type games were the slower, simulation type.
The is 100% what I’ve been saying. No Mercy was never an arcade game. I’m starting to think a lot of people saying that never played the game.

All that time spent on those awful mini games would have been better spent expanding the match types and adding more layers to the main game mechanics. What a complete waste of time and effort. WWF No Mercy never had all that crap, it focussed entirely on good gameplay, a solid branching career campaign, and excellent match modes that were all fun to play. I feel bad for Evil Uno having to promote this and he never even got to be in the game. What a slap in the face.
Could not agree more. The mini games were a swing and a miss. Just awful and a huge waste of time. With all the other wrestling games that have come and gone, you'd think they would have incorporated the best parts and made an outstanding wrestling game. Instead they tried to be so different from wwe they went too far in a confusing and useless direction that will be damn near impossible to come back from. Even if they some how muster up a sequel, I will not be purchasing it.
A BR mode is embarrassing. It's what you do when you have no actual ideas. I'd never play one.

Kenny Omega wanted mini-games in, and Yukes got overruled by AEW on everything.
One of their people went to Visual Concepts and worked on WWE 2K24, and said it was much better, as they can just make the game without WWE interference, and WWE just tick off on things.
I consider Mdickie's Wrestling Empire as the spiritual successor to the N64 era of wrestling games.
It’s funny how just about every criticism of this game could also apply to the company itself.

People keep saying WWE is more focused on simulation gameplay but they keep forgetting you can literally go into the options and get rid of all of the simulation aspects of the game.

@@yutikoonowhere. The only option you can remove is the weight detection, you can set it to arcade, so small guys can lift up giants, but other than that nothing much changes.
What’s really sad is I want to play it but I’m not buying it at the price it’s at. No demo. No trial. Not a big enough sale… I wonder how they’re doing in the sales department. That price has to drop. I can’t really give an opinion on it until I play it myself.
For WWE 2K23 I can spend HOURS just cresting a wrestler. Thats not to mention creating an entrance for them and a moveset if I chose to do so. Im not buying AEW Fight Forever even at $40 if its customization is so limited. So sad.

I don't think that's weird at all. 2K19 was great. Fight Forever is absolute garbage. I feel so cheated that I bought this, given Tony and the current AEW product I should have known better.

Wrestling fan here, favorite video game...Here Comes the Pain.
A very fair review! Its limitations really let the game down. I enjoyed the general tone of the game and the old style mechanics. Road to Elite was fun the first couple of plays throughs, but not long after I started it up for the third time I gave up on the game all together. The fact there's no acknowledgement or title storyline after you win one sums it up.
It had lots of potential, but there's not enough to keep the user coming back.

Honestly, I could forgive a lot of things about this game but 2 things kill me:
-Customization SUCKS. This is not a secret, but like god damn it's disgraceful how few customization options there are for CAW.
-Mash to kick out. I get no feedback from this system, I don't like it at all. The 2k stick-flick up for kickouts isn't great but at least I feel in control.
I feel they purposefully made the creation suite so bad to force people into buying dlc wrestlers.
Even not much good game like WCW Backstage Assault and ECW Anarchy Rulz have a very good CAW and unlockables things to use and customize.

I had high hopes honestly since Yukes made Day of reckoning on the gamecube. Those games were my favorite.
AKI made the Day of Reckoning games. Yukes made all the SvR games and 2K games up until 2K20

The good news is that money mark doesn't have to make money on wrestling, video games, or anything as long as pops keeps giving him an allowance of car bumper patents.
I was pretty excited for this game till I saw the graphics. That made me wait for the reviews. Even the reviews that were good the gameplay looked bad. Hopefully they learn and come back with a better sequel.

At no point in its release was Fight Forever ever going "smooth".
What I like about WWE2K is GM mode, picking a roster and booking matches, how they didnt put that in here makes no sense.

All the missing modes and CAW stuff could have been fixed if they didn't waste time on a sh*tty fortnite wanna-be mode and stupid mario party modes nobody wants to play.
Give that budget to most wrestling fans and they would put out a better game.

For a day or 2 I was like this is soo cool and unique on release. I bought the ultimate edition and to this day I regret it. I tried 7 times to get a refund all times denied

Played this when it came out and it made me think of the PS2 WWF smackdown games, so I dug out my Smackdown Here comes the pain game and played it on my PS2 instead. Hopefully the sequel of the AEW game has better graphics if they ever do one

Ai isn’t programmed to eliminate. Core problem. They stand and look at you waiting for you to get up , refusing to attack the other opponent, team you , and it’s just randomized chance it’ll work.
Inferior a team of workers fail at something that’s their subject. Y’all bread and butter yall fail. But dance around fixing the ai and release dlc ? No seriously f these developers.

Eliminate the other wrestlers.
Hate seeing them stand there and not attack the other grounded opponents. Taunt get a signature or finisher then turn directly to you. If they attack the other wrestler it’s only to build a signature or finisher and use it on you !
Still no strong grapples in that match either. Never explained why you could never ever use strong grapples in a casino royal match.
I’m an artist and people demand a lot I get it. But a team is ignoring core issues within a main match type and do everything else but fix it. They choose to go around what’s needed and ask for dlc. I’m done at this point. truly disgusted they didn’t fix that mode.
Said oh season 2 that means career mode is updated and fixed. Let’s go through career mode and see what’s fixed it’s been months.

I think smackdown vs raw 07 was the best wrestling game of all time.
The game was announced as a long-term game... Translated: there will be some paid DLCs to come.

They didnt even bother putting on sale for Christmas, nobody wants this trash. The sad thing is, those of us who saw this coming and said so in the comments for years during gameplay trailers were seen as negative, or WWE fan boys. Hate to be right.
The AEW fanbase has fallen off since one bill phil departed.
Graphics 1 star, gameplay 2 stars, originality 3 stars, fun factor 3 stars, longevity 2 stars. All in all a poor effort. The graphics for this gen are unbelievably bad. Really glitchy, restrictive roster, nah.

I love Revenge, No Mercy, Here comes the pain and most of the Svr and WWE2k. 15 and 20 were dog shit and 22 and 23 have been let downs from glitches ( I can only download 35 caws... We should be able to fit 350 stars, plus 50+ arenas, championships, images, videos etc... ) to every other glitch we know. We deserve a new better wrestling game. AEW was laughably bad. No mercy was good in 99-03 but when they said a no mercy type game I didn't know they meant graphics, gameplay, how barebonrs it felt. We deserve a great wrestling game.

Was hyped when they released it, then I borrowed the Switch port, and it was a massive let down. I read a bunch of complaints about the game, so I'm certain that the issues do not plague to Switch port exclusively! Was so let down when no one liked it. I was hoping for a better tenure on PC, given that they allow mods, only to find out that no one is playing it there, either!
It's a shitty mobile game disguised that cowers behind a No Mercy comparison smokescreen. I tried so hard to convince myself to buy this game but I'm glad better sense prevailed.

AEW is a company that exists purely for the Attitude Era fan base. Nostalgia is gonna be their eventual downfall if they don’t realize those times are long gone. Cussing and being ‘hardcore’ just for the sake of it isn’t gonna cut it anymore, and a game inspired by a N64 game sure as shit won’t either. Nostalgia only lasts for so long. Then you get bored of it. AEW is proving that in real time.
Still better than any game in the 2k series. Bring back the no mercy, Smackdown vs Raw, Day of Reckoning gameplay!

If the game only costs 30 to 40 dollars, no one will complain, especially because it was technically up to date in 2010.

Ssooooo many hours put in on those N64 games. Even in the age of the GC and Wii, my friends older brother had made like 60 or 80 characters and we'd run tons of 'pass the controller' Rumbles with like 5 or 6 of us around. One guy would make like 20elims, then someone gets a lucky grapple and tosses him for the win, and all the sudden I'm taking a pedigree in the kitchen. ......

They went backrupt back in 2013 & THQ was liquidated & what was left was bought up by Nordic games who is Embracer Group now.

They did everything wrong - everything.
If your wrestling game can't compete with the production values of the 2K series, it needs to go the other route and have a lot of depth in its gameplay. Fight Forever doesn't accomplish that at all.
You can hit your strongest grapple moves immediately, which is contrary to the pacing of the AKI games that this is supposed to be patterened after. Wrestlers also don't hold damaged limbs or crawl to the ropes to escape submissions, both of which added depth in the AKI games and should be a basic feature of a game that came out in 2023.
The spirit meter also lacks nuance. It rises quickly, doesn't coincide with a wrestler regenerating any health, and isn't conditional on any other factors. By comparison, wrestlers had a fighting chance even late into a match they were losing in the AKI series, and there were smaller details like your spirit meter getting lower if you taunted outside the ring like a coward to your opponent who was in the ring.
The main story mode is laughable too. You get separate storylines that make each one feel pointless, and you get the cheapest and laziest JPEG backdrops without any audio for the segments with wrestlers in between. The mini-games were also a feature that no one has ever asked for in a wrestling game, so devoting resources to creating so many of them shows a shocking misunderstanding of the market. Since launch, they've also added a mobile game-esque mode in Stadium Stampede that could only be accessed online - in this game that barely has any players. It's almost like the devs were caught between wanting to be a more serious AKI-like game (which emphasized slower, simulation-style gameplay) and some zany Chikara-like experience. It instead does both somewhat poorly.
It's understandable that this game also wasn't going to have the crazy volume of options and match types that are in the 2K games. That's fine, but what's the excuse to limit customization so radically? Why can't the player edit those wrestler stats or change their appearances? Why can't the player play around with stipulations in exhibition matches? My suspicion is that they blocked all of that to force people to be dependent on THQ Nordic selling over-priced DLC. Regardless, it destroys the replay value. I don't want to play as Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus, and Outcast Toni Storm. I don't want to have the same exact timer in the exploding barbed wire match or the same first-to-a-fall stip in four-ways. Not letting the player tinker with those things robs them of any incentive to keep playing the game as AEW's storylines and characters evolve.
It pales even next to options offered in No Mercy, but it outright feels like a demo when compared to the amount of options in a 2K game. The depth isn't there compared to No Mercy's gameplay, and it certainly can't compete here with Fire Pro World. What else can Fight Forever offer then? Nothing, really. It's a mediocre game through and through, and the over-priced DLC offerings since launch are nothing but an insult.

If they make a sequel nobody will buy it. They ripped off anyone who pre-ordered the Elite edition and let's say they continue releasing DLC that actually makes the game enjoyable it'll come with a price tag like season 2 did and people will have paid the price of two triple a titles of not more just to make this game enjoyable.
I keep seeing the argument of "I'm gonna keep buying the dlc because i wanna support this game" which is the dumbest shit I've ever heard. If the only way a company can give you a game worth playing is to gauge you of every penny despite the same team making great games for 15+ years for a different company than I think you have an issue. It isn't that they couldn't make a great game, it's the fact they clearly chose to release a mediocre one instead and have the balls to ask for more money to give us things that should have been included for the price we bought the game for initially. Games that came out on PS1 have more match types and overall replayability because the team cared back then. Where as Fight Forever is nothing more than a cash grab!

I stopped taking this review seriously after he recommended the battle royale mode, also this game kind of died after WWE 2K23 came out and was surprisingly good
Here's the deal why pay $60 on a game when I can buy WWE 2k for half that price. 1st and foremost I play WWE 2k19. I don't even play the New WWE games. I also play emulators on my tablet like No mercy and Revenge. I've never played fight forever, I may pick it up if the price goes down to around $25-$30.
So it was the Right Decision to Not Buy it?
