This was often viewed as a "war of religion", but it had nothing to do with religious dogma and everything to do with history (Battle of the Boyne etc). Have you ever considered this (still on-going) problem as a future subject? Best regards and many thanks for all your hard work and your perfect videos.
Yes I visited Northern Ireland (and the Republic) years ago. It came to mind when I was doing this research, but as you say it would be a great oversimplification to reduce that conflict to religion.
@@evaschubert1 Yes, Eva it is very complicated. It is not religion but bigotry that is the problem. It is sad, but, some of the nicest people I have ever met, in my life, were citizens of Northern Ireland - both Protestant and Catholic. They never enquired about my religion, because I was English and therefore it was not relevant.
Anyway, keep making those videos, Eva. I enjoy them very much. I think I'll try Ferdinand and Isabella next. I love history, particularly European History. This is why it is important to learn from history. Unfortunately we are seeing some of this unfolding now in Muslim countries. Here in the USA where there is such a debate over abortion, those like me who are anti-abortion must accept differences in opinion and be reasonable in our legislation. I can tolerate what I can’t condone.
Second time watching this. Killer. I'd read Schiller's account of the 30 Years War two decades ago, but this episode brings a whole new level of depth, and provides a real sense of what it was like for those caught up in it.

Please do not be downhearted by the relatively low number of ‘likes’ for these outstanding videos, Ms. Schubert. I was delighted to sit through the first three episodes of the Reformation series back-to-back on Monday, after which I began referring friends and family. I finished the series, re-watching part of the fifth episode to rehearse the important conclusion and its implications for our current historical moment. As an American, I find myself marveling at the superiority of the Canadian educational system when I listen to the clarity, logical connectedness and humane descriptions of the implications of people’s actions, policy decisions and personal choices which you supply, not simply from speculation, but from quite often from the historical record! 😮 It is just this depth of focus, this sensitivity and wisdom that give your work real credibility and makes me want to watch everything you’ve done, regardless of the topic. It is also what made me strangely both unsurprised and delighted to see, when I looked at your website, that you saw yourself first of all as a singer-songwriter. There is that same sensitivity and emphasis on human feeling - so rare in historical studies. Thank you very much! 😊

There's a great movie about something similar at that time with Michael Caine called the last valley.. Some of my ancestors with my family name left Switzerland in 1649 and went to Germany near Heidelberg to a hugenout settlement in the odenwald
My Huegonaught 4? great grandmother emigrated from from France & married into an English Protestant family but hostility towards Catholics was so intense that my family might have altered her history. My mother was Catholic but she knew that she could not remain so to marry my father. She became a Methodist-Presbyterian, whichever church was close. Dad's father's family were Presbyterians & his mother's side were Methodists. When my cousin married a Catholic her father expressed doubts about going to the wedding. His mother, my g-grandmother told him to "Shut-up", we are both going to the wedding. That was my first taste of champaign.
There are 2 other results from the thirty years war ending in 1648. 1. Switzerland becomes independent. 2. The Hohenzollern dynasty begins to strengthen by “picking up the pieces” of the Holy Roman Empire. The H dynasty will eventually unify the Germans in 2 centuries to create the German Empire.
This is not Christianity. It’s barbarism. When are we humans going to learn? In all the chaos there will always be a remnant of true believers. In the book, “Devils Delision,” Berlinski lists the wars that were not religious. The list goes on and on!!! What does this say about man? We are definitely fallen creatures in need of a Savior. The ligue was not an international ligue but an alliance of catholic prince's of the German empire And Sweden was primarily financed by catholic France to fight the Habsburg emperor. This war was not primarily about religion but about power. Gustaf Adolph himself said that if this was primarily about religion he would have marched to Rome.

@@piushalg5041 The Wars of Religion is a historical convention (I did not invent it) and refers to multiple conflicts, not just the 30 Years War. While religion was not the only factor, it was undeniably the new factor in these conflicts.
The common denominator is all of this are humans. The more I learn the more I believe the Stoics had it mostly correct. BUT then again appears the common denominator. Sapientia, Virtus, Iustitia , Temperantia , Summun Bonum.

Yeah the problem with the author’s thesis is that there can’t be two answers to the math problem. Protestantism and Catholicism’s to two fundamentally different takes on Christianity. Both of these takes can’t be correct. Protestantism was a definitive revolt with the previous 1500 years of Christianity. What it wanted to do, was not Christianity. It was some form of following christ independent of the Church Christ founded on the Apostles and their successors, and completely u raveled Christendom to this day. And continues to unravel in itself.
My southern primitive Baptist preacher in the early 60's said Catholics weren't really Christians, so I guess that first 1500 years was just an error God finally decided to fix. Lol
