I've read that there's no clear consensus on why it does the dance. Some think as you said, that it's for hunting worms, other's think it's something they do to blend in with the environment.
It’s actually very unlikely that this is done for hunting purposes. The most convincing hypothesis is that this dance is a mild threat response from the woodcock. The threat isn’t apparent enough to stop foraging, but they want to be ready in case something happens. It’s also theorized that it might be a nervous tick.
@@DustyHoney clearly they are having a good time hunting for worms. They are thinking, "this restaurant looks good", or, "maybe we should just grille in the backyard". Dancing and eating is a valuable skill in the wild.
Great video. I have seen woodcocks on my property occasionally over the years. I was lucky to see them in flight a couple of times spiraling through the air. Unfortunately I didn't have a video cam on those occasions and am looking to find some video online. Thanks for posting this wonderful scene.
So you other countries think you have an interesting woodcock? Look at this bad boy, he dances every time he walks dammit even you have to say that's impressive...
Did you ever get to see him strike his beak into the ground? That dance it is doing, it's looking for worms. Excellent quality camera you got too. Check out my video of the American Woodcock doing the same thing: (wouldn't allow me to post link)
The bird dancing goes great with Lou Bega's Mambo No. 5
So cute. I love to see the babies 'walk this way' with mom.
They actually dance like this when hunting for worms.
👍😂👌

On the contraire, they dance because they are having a good time.

Why does he dance?
The male courts the female by walking stiff-legged and with his wings stretched vertically, and by bobbing and bowing.

El macho corteja a la hembra caminando con las piernas rígidas y con las alas estiradas verticalmente, y balanceándose y haciendo reverencias.
