  • CAMEO APPEARANCES -- Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Chris Tucker, Ice Cube, Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Bruce Campbell.
ROCK SONGS INCLUDE -- Jesus Christ Superstar, Mr. Roboto, Space Oddity, Jailbreak, Riders On the Storm, Enter Sandman, Show Me How to Live. This classic sci-fi film is my favorite allegory of modern evangelicalism's twisted view of the Trinity.
PANEL ANALYSIS of this rockin' video: • Klaatu Project Raucous...
Scripturally speaking, Jesus sacrificially saved humanity from sin. Klaatu, on the other hand saved humanity from Gort (God) with a password: Klaatu birada nikto (the "sinner's prayer"?) His was not a rescue mission. It was an ultimatum. It was a threat of fire from a race of robots given Godlike power to burn those who attempt armed aggression. Stopping armed aggression seems a good thing. But how can wiping out a planets give Klaatu the moral high ground? If a man murders, would it be just to execute his family, too? This removes individual accountability. Does having the power to obliterate a planet give one the right to dictate under threat of annihilation what is acceptable behavior? This is the imposition of a vast superpower upon a helpless population. Will earth people accept having new overlords who force them to disarm?
    * Is Klaatu the impressively dignified emissary he presents himself to be, or an alien supremacist?
    * Is Klaatu a tolerant ambassador or humanity's new master?
    * Is his message one of peace and good will or of threat of annihilation?
    * Does he represent an advanced democracy or a radical police state?
    * Is his talk of freedom real or propaganda to veil a coup d'état?
A strange Christ figure, Klaatu shows no tender feelings, no compassion or tears, no empathy or concern, and no interest in personal relationships or providing humans with assistance. He cruelly speaks of blowing up New York and wiping out life on earth with no twinge of conscience or remorse. Klaatu shows us a judgmental, exasperated, annoyed, smug, remote threatener, not a savior. He’s a lawgiving overlord with a genocidal robot (the God character) whom he created but can't always control. Comically, Klaatu the "messiah" even litters on the street and lies to a child about his need for a flashlight.
In perhaps the strangest plot hole in the film, Klaatu gives Professor Barnhart the formula for the development of the very technology (celestial mechanics) which moments later he warns will put the planet in "grave danger".
A Christ figure at first glance, perhaps, Klaatu reveals himself as a kind of antichrist. He sells his mission of ultimatum as a mission to save, which makes this "Christ's" theology not one of grace, but of decision. To save ourselves we are told we have to "make a decision for Klaatu." I don't buy decisional salvation or a theology of threat and fear. To Klaatu I do not say, “Yes, sir and No, sir." I don't care to repeat, "Klaatu barada nikto," either. To Klaatu and all smiling, extorting thugs, I say, "Give me liberty or give me death." I'd rather die free than to be a slave of intergalactic automatons of mass destruction on every street corner.

I have watched this film many times over the years and I never get tired of watching. The simplicity of the movie is overwhelming and the acting by everyone was superb. So much to take away from this film. If I were a teacher I would force my students to watch it.

@thomaswayneward , Interesting. Perhaps it's not a coincidence that the philosophy of the evil trinity (gort, klatu, flying saucer) should resemble Marxist/socialist/communist philosophy--the philosophy responsible for more evil than facism.

I am 70 and I really enjoyed this. The way you related the story and actors to the story of Jesus was amazing; I would have never noticed that. This movie is one of the very top classic sci-fi movies of all time; and for the 1950's, it was so very far ahead of it's time. This one...Forbidden Planet...War of the Worlds...at the top of the very best of the 50's.
I had never heard these other renditions of Major Tong and Riders On the Storm; also classic songs and not to be casually messed with, but I also really liked these versions.
See...even an "old dog" like me can like new stuff...LOL..!!

I saw this movie decades ago, so I did not know Scripture, but I was floored when she asked him if they had the power of life, and he said, that is from the 'All mighty Spirit' ....

Peter, It might interest you to know: “In the original script, . . . Klaatu explains to the astonished onlooker [Helen] that ‘Yes, this is the future power of science and technology,’ but the Motion Picture Association of America’s censor for the film, Joseph Breen, determined that this was unacceptable and forced the producer to add the line ‘that power is reserved to the Almighty Spirit.’”

    • @bertgary5916

Mr. C, the "message" is a threat of annihilation. Intervention? Global incineration (and the threat of global incineration) doesn't sound like a temporary deployment to help. The intent to use robots of global destruction hardly gives Klaatu the moral high ground. To me, this looks like a silent coup. It's nice to have caring new neighbors. But the film's "Klaatus next door" are conscienceless world destroyers.

I went to the movies on my 7th birthday to see this movie because i could get in with just a dime and 6 RC cola bottle caps. Things were so much cheaper in 1957. But not wanting to stray too far from why I am making this post, the movie impressed on me an idea that had been building since I could get my hands on a comic book or get in to see movies like this or Forbidden Planet. Needless to say I have been able to say "KLAATU-BARADA-NIKTO" since that day.

Indeed, Arthur. The name Gort is a bit obvious. Helen Benson is interesting, in that it was Queen Helena who traveled to the holy land in the 4th century to identify Christian holy sites and build memorial chapel's. Regarding her last nane, Ben means "son of" in Hebrew, so Benson means son of the son. The Judas character's name is Thomas Stephens, bringing to mind both doubting Thomas and Stephen, the 1st Christian martyr. The Professor reminds me of Nicodemus, and Secretary Harley's name brings to mind Herod, who imprisoned John the Baptist as Harley imprisoned Klaatu at the hospital. Also, Klaatu's alias, John Carpenter, bears the initials JC. Do you see others?

@aylarose1024 All universities have classes that analyze works of music, art, literature, theater, and filmmaking. I know you aren't suggesting all such classes be cancelled. Enjoying a work of art doesn't mean you can't also thoughtfully reflect on its meaning, does it?
As to your suggestion, Ayla, I appreciate it. And I can and I do enjoy the film as such. TDTESS is my favorite 50s sci fi film. It's great fun and well done. Yet, it is a documented fact that the filmmakers intended TDTESS as a "Christ allegory". It's true. I did my homework. As such, TDTESS is fair game for Christian theological/biblical analysis, dialogue, and debate.
Theology exists in contexts of human meaning and meaning making. Thus, I make videos from time to time specifically and exclusively for my church's Wed Nite Panel Zoom and Livestream discussions. I do so as pastor of Owl Rock UMC in Atlanta. My Klaatu Project video's popularity among thousands of TH-camr "strangers" is a surprise, albeit a welcome one.

There is the argument that any species that has learned to traverse the vast empties of space would have little use for the negative traits which plague Earth humans. But I rather enjoyed L Ron Hubbard's take on that in 'Battlefield Earth' (the novel, not that god-awful movie, although that is enjoyable as a terrible movie that's so bad it's good), where the alien Psychlos intercepted Voyager 1, I think, whichever surveyed Saturn and shot on out of the system. We had provided a map for them to follow back, the Gold Record, and the metals and alloys in the probe indicated good mining on Earth! So, they drop drone ships in the atmosphere and flea-bomb the pesky vermin in the way on the surface. Yeah, us, exterminated.
Of course, talking Hollywood takes, that possibility has to be reviewed, but the reality we are facing indicates otherwise. Whatever species or multiple species have been buzzing "our planet" apparently have their own motives, and are in no hurry to explain. And anyone who doesn't believe that something is really occurring in our vicinity, well, must disagree. Too much in our sky, too much from our space probes, too much on our moon, and the stuff sighted around our sun is mind exploding. We are the infants, and maybe those things have always been there. Don't know, but doesn't change the fact that many highly accomplished people have seen these "things."
Our science and technology is infantile in comparison.

@WhiteBeard SkyDaddy - Forceful comment. Thanks for watching.
Your opinion appears to be that aliens have been buzzing earth for some time for unknown reasons. I use the word opinion because it has not been proven that the evidence (some of it produced by the US military) of what appears to be oddly shaped craft behaving oddly ARE alien craft. Nations and militaries (including ours) continue to investigate what these videos and radar images show, and what credible eyewitnesses are seeing. Called UFOs and now UAPs, the “U” still stands for unidentified.
One can believe UAPs are alien craft. One can have an opinion they are alien craft. But, for something to be factually proven, one needs incontrovertible evidence. Investigation-wise, these phenomena remain unidentified. Thus investigations continue.
My opinion: I think it's possible that some of these aerial phenomena are alien craft. It's also possible that none of them are. They could be unexplained natural phenomena. They could be optical illusions or equipment artifacts. They could be manmade craft. They could even be human time-traveling craft coming from the future to study earth’s past.
I agree with you that we have credible witnesses who have seen “things”, and we have electronic data that shows “things”. Right now, given the evidence I’ve read and seen, those “things” remain unexplained. Meanwhile, everyone is free to believe, speculate, argue, and opine about it. I wonder: when it comes to UAPs, how far away are we from the day when the unidentified become identified?
For me, the underlying question is: How hard is it for the universe (or multiverse) to produce life? How tough is the “life genesis filter”? Some count the many galaxies, stars, and planets and proclaim with certainty that the universe is teeming with life. This is an opinion. It may be true. But it also may be true that life is so hard to produce that it took an entire universe, or even an infinite number of multiverses, to produce life on one, and only one planet. I lean toward the latter. That’s my informed opinion based on the books, lectures, and online videos of Paul Davies, Brian Greene, Stephen Hawking, David Kipping and others. I could be wrong. I remain open.

@@bertgary5916 We are within 99.99% agreement, reserving .01% margin of error from writing down thoughts. Talking about Hollywood UFOs and aliens always brings me around to what's going on with that currently. Sorry. Very short explanation, I was with three friends back in 1985, we were house-sitting one's uncle's place. Waiting on him to open the door, I noticed this "thing", machine, craft, floating out of the neighbor's yard into his backyard. The other two saw my attention and noticed it and we were calmly watching it, but when other buddy raised up from the door and saw what we were fixated on he started to freak! (He was raised in a very fundamental Christian environment) Very close, less than thirty feet away. It was obviously a machine, like a wingless wedge shaped jet fighter, but jet black and no insignia and it was floating, very slowly. It destroyed our realities. But I have to admit that yes, Earth people may very well have built that thing. My guts say otherwise, but that doesn't make it so. The other part that adds doubt, we acted completely out of character afterwards. All we had to do was move a little to keep viewing the thing, but we looked at each other, went inside and sat down and started eating and watching some eighties movie. We never spoke of it, to each other or anyone else, and the fellow keying the door completely occluded the entire event from memory. I know because I asked him at our ten year school reunion, and again earlier this year. The other two remember, but like me they struggled with the recall for years.
All right, sorry about that man. Didn't really intend to go off into that, but it's only the most incredible thing I ever saw, and I've seen some amazing stuff. It's not like it's an uncommon story anymore though. The mundane everyday setting gave the whole thing a very surreal quality. You know, BAM! There it was. And WTF?! An understanding of others comes from such an experience, because what are everyday ordinary people supposed to do with such knowledge and memories? Like I said, shattered realities. Certainly changes perspectives of what is possible and impossible.
Yeah, I like movies too man. Lol

    • @bertgary5916
      @bertgary5916  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, from what I've read and from what they said in the documentary, "Making 'The Earth Stand Still'", the Christ allegory was intentional. John Carpenter and Jesus Christ share the initials JC, and of course Jesus is thought to have been a carpenter by trade, although that is a mistranslation of the biblical Greek word tekton which just means builder. Carpernter (Klaatu) comes from above to earth using biblical words like peace and goodwill. His robot, Gort (the God character in the allegory) demonstrates unearthly power, as does the ship (the Holy Spirit character). Klaatu, the robot, and the ship (the film's trinity) alarm the authorities. They guard the ship; they shoot, arrest, grill, and then hunt Klaatu; and they encase the robot in a plastic prison. The position of Klaatu's dying body in the street is the classic crucifix pose. And there's more. All of this is to say that the subliminal biblical allegory wasn't as subliminal as the filmmakers intented. As you say, the religion and God issue comes to the fore. In that sense, far from being a no-show, the "religion and god" angle was integral to the show. But, in at least two other ways that come to mind, you're right about the no-show. First, I read about a lastminute change in the resurrection scene about the power to raise the dead: “In the original script, . . . Klaatu explains to the astonished onlooker [Helen] that this (restoring life to the dead) is the future power of science and technology, but the Motion Picture Association of America’s censor for the film, Joseph Breen, determined that this was unacceptable and forced the producer to add the line ‘that power is reserved to the Almighty Spirit.’” So in the original script, the "Almighty Spirit" was indeed a no-show. Imagine! A Hollywood censor added God to the movie. Second, in my estimation as one who has studied and taught the NT Gospels for decades, the filmakers created an allegory of evangelical fundamentalism's warped yet pervasive view of the trinity, not the actual Trinitarian God of the Gospels. In this sense, God is also a no-show. Thanks for the thought-producing comment. My livestream/zoom panel discussion of this issue might interest you: th-cam.com/video/M6nhLlrk250/w-d-xo.html

Wesley, i can understand why you would say that, but you're wrong.. I'm not making fun of the film.. The filmmakers Intended It to be a Christ allegory. This is documented. Their allegory, however, models and serves an atrocious and pervasive modern evangelical view of Christ and the Trinity. As a theologian, I am lampooning that, not the film. I suggest you read what I wrote in the description and watch the Panel discussion we had on this video. There you will see trat I bear no malice against the film.. It is my favorite sci-fi movie from the fifties.. Coincidentally, it's also the perfect vehicle for challenging modern evangelicalism's unholy view of the Trinity.
