Watched this as a kid thinking it was a legitimate science fiction and I loved it. Rewatched it recently as a comedy as it was intended as and I loved it.

I still remember being an extra on this movie (I played one of the soldiers). Got to meet several of the stars, including Michael J. Fox (he's a genuinely nice guy in real life) and the director Tim Burton (also a nice person to work around.). I spent a week in the Northern Arizona desert working some of the Alien Ship arrival scenes and even got to play a tanker with some Russian tanks standing in for American tanks. It was fun, long days, and I watch it every so often for a good laugh.

@@mrgarica9633 No, they warned us about souvenirs as it was an old Army Tank and Training Range. I did get a really nice paycheck and a ruined pair of muddy combat boots. One of the conditions for any military extra's (most of us were Air Force or Army National Guard) was to bring a pair of combat boots (to wear as soldiers). It rained a couple of days on the set and it was an older pair anyway.

but it does not fit with logic he only attacked after they felt threat from bird . humans are really assumptious and try to think that everyone else is also like them if humans kill and torture animals just for their pleasure and taste its good according to humans but they also judge aliens even without looking at them how can you say every organism have the same feelings as humans just like humans like greed , ego and hate ?

I was terrified by this movie when i was a kid. For some reason I would watch things that were not for my age and feel fine but I took a glimpse of it while my parents were watching it and it traumatized me for years. I don't remember a lot from it but the sheer mention of this movie reminds me how scared I was.
Meanwhile I would watch horror movies or violent movie and be completely ok
Dad also was overprotective, but for some reason he'd would watch watch comedy, horror, etc with me. So after watching stuff like The Thing & Pumpkin Head, this was just funny, lol. I was born in the late 80s, so maybe you are are younger than myself?

When this came on tv when I was a kid, my parents thought it to be more like a kids movie(since the aliens looked so comical) so I was left alone to watch it. Lets just say I had nightmares for a long time..

Why does this whole movie feel like one big fever dream
You'd think after the first time the aliens just destroy and kill everyone leaving no survivors in the first meeting and then leave...You'd think that alone would say they do not come in peace, also launching nukes at them would've saved a ton of time and lives...assuming the device they had wasn't prepared.

Cartel members come accros the border while the president claims they are all good people who want peace so he let's them all in while ignoring the murders etc.. That happen..

I think it was pretty reasonable to assume that it was just a cultural misunderstanding.
There were many wars in human history that were started because of cultural misunderstandings, that ended in unneccessary bloodshed.
The second time it happened was a good time to realize that they didn't come in peace.
All in all I think the President in this movie acted rationally.

considering a few % points difference can make a human thrive or pass out it's not that weird to think they couldn't breathe our atmosphere without some extra nitrogen. Maybe they needed 90% nitrogen instead of 78%.
One of the best star-studded over the top comedies. This was the 90s version of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World for the 60s and Cannonball Run for the 80s.
That's a fair comparison of the casts. The difference is that It's a MMW was actually funny, whereas Mars attacks was a new genre, namely a comedy with no jokes.

That movie scarred me . I watched it pretty young and developed a fear for aliens for pretty much all my teen years. Watching the recap now, i still find those scenes disturbing even thought i know its a comedy movie

The amount this terrified me as a child was no joke. For months I couldn’t sleep because I was much to young to have seen this. The dismembered heads were a prominent feature in my nightmares. I’ve since watched it and it’s not as scary as I found it as a child. If only that worked for the birds, watched it multiple times since, still terrified of birds.

I saw this in the theaters and people were walking out because they didn't understand it. The monotone voice doesn't do justice of how great this film really was.

I watched this with my daughter who I guess was around 7 at the time, with it being advertised as a comedy I had no particular qualms about her viewing it, it turned out she was absolutely terrified of the aliens to the extent I was horrified by her reaction! Switched it off and to this day she won't watch it!

For a goofy film, the cast is overloaded with top Hollywood stars, before superhero films, we had never seen so many stars in the same, goofy comedy film, and i love it.
Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Pierce Brosnan (who was James Bond in those days), Glenn Close, Jack Black, Michael J Fox, Nathalie Portman, Jim Brown, Pam Brier, Sarah Jessica Parker, TOM JONES!! and more i forgot... That was unheard of, with that cast that year you could expect the best film ever done in history, but we got this... And i prefer it
The design of the aliens is naturally scary, its basically a skull with human eyes, without the skin. We instinctively find this horrifying. Kind of underhanded in my opinion...
