Klaatu (Michael Rennie) gives a warning to the human race about aggression.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
All of Washington, D.C., is thrown into a panic when an extraterrestrial spacecraft lands near the White House. Out steps Klaatu (Michael Rennie, in a role intended for Claude Rains), a handsome and soft-spoken interplanetary traveler, whose "bodyguard" is Gort (Lock Martin), a huge robot who spews forth laser-like death rays when danger threatens. After being wounded by an overzealous soldier, Klaatu announces that he has a message of the gravest importance for all humankind, which he will deliver only when all the leaders of all nations will agree to meet with him. World politics being what they are in 1951, Klaatu's demands are turned down and he is ordered to remain in the hospital, where his wounds are being tended. Klaatu escapes, taking refuge in a boarding house, where he poses as one "Mr. Carpenter" (one of the film's many parallels between Klaatu and Christ). There the benign alien gains the confidence of a lovely widow (Patricia Neal) and her son, Bobby (Billy Gray), neither of whom tumble to his other-worldly origins, and seeks out the gentleman whom Bobby regards as "the smartest man in the world" -- an Einstein-like scientist, Dr. Barnhardt (Sam Jaffe). The next day, at precisely 12 o'clock, Klaatu arranges for the world to "stand still" -- he shuts down all electrical power in the world, with the exception of essentials like hospitals and planes in flight. Directed by Robert Wise, who edited Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) for director Orson Welles before going on to direct such major 1960s musicals as West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965), The Day the Earth Stood Still was based on the story Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates.

I'm 68 yrs. old and this is my favorite sci-fi movie of all time.
I am 65 and I remember this too, scary when the robot gets out its prison and disintegrates the guards and then turns on Patrica Neal.
If only humanity and AI could work in a logical, coordinated manner
I got to see this at the MGM grand in Reno, they showed these old films and I saw Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D there too. I was 8 and it was the early 80’s, but man was I captivated by the message and it sticks with me to this day.

This is one of the most influential and powerful films ever made in American cinematic history. Klatu's speech is awesome. Robert Wise, the director, eventually directed "The Sound of Music." Amazing movie.

Michael Rennie's artistry is pure class in this film.
He looks a little like Tesla...talks a lot like him!🙂
Rennie's performance fascinates me. It's so subtly alien. His body language is, well, wrong. He stands too close to people when he talks to them, and he never looks away from their eyes. When he walks or runs he barely moves his arms. His movements are all deliberate, like he consciously thinks about what he's doing rather than acts instinctively. There's rarely anything threatening in his manner, in fact he comes across as warm and gentle. But you can see how uncomfortable he makes the people around him.
This doesn’t mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibility.

One of the best moments ever in movies. This is badly needed to be heard today. Humanity has to wake up before it strikes midnight!
We tried it back in the 60s. It was called MAD or "mutually assured destruction. We almost nuked ourselves into oblivion, but for sheer luck.

@@dragonslayer9671 I grew up in the 60s, I'm 67 now, and prefer the movies from back the with a few exceptions such as the Man From Earth, 2007, about a 14,000 year old man. Just dialogue but we'll worth it. I prefer movies with good acting and a good plot, this was taken from a sci-fi book called Farewell to the Master 1940, different from the film but just as good. Agreed, Keanu Reeves was wasted in that movie. The book was very good and had a surprising ending.

It was relevant when Stalin was murdering millions to enforce his idea of a socialist utopia. People had to go along with the program or be liquidated. That seems to be the message here. @ReddNekk13 The Thing (1982) was a remake of The Thing from Another World (1951) - I don't think any reasonable film fan would say that was worse, and probably most would say it was far better.
Heat (1995) was also a remake of LA Heat by the same director, albeit scaled up to full Hollywood standards and what an incredible film it was.
The Fugitive (1993) was a film remake of the 60s TV series - I've never seen the series, but the film is one of Harrison Ford's and Tommy Lee Jone's best in my opinion (and one of my all time faves).
Also starring Sam Jaffe ... He was on the blacklist during the fifties. His role in the movie The asphalt Jungle as Doc Erwin Riedenschneider was impressive !!

I just watched this on television this evening. For the ?? time. Over the years I've seen it many times. It's definitely a classic. Love it. The message is simple and clear........clean up our act or get our collective butt kicked. As it should be.

It worries me how many people applaud the idea of an irrevocably powerful, tyrannical robot enforcer who punishes the 'irresponsible'. Remember, we just had 3 years under lockdown where visiting a friend, hugging your own grandma and even just going outside was deemed 'irresponsible'. Worryingly, some people are currently arguing that NOT allowing toddlers to 'choose their gender' is 'irresponsible (and 'immoral' according to Old Joe). Some countries are making it a crime to 'use the wrong pronouns'. Think carefully when you imagine tyrannically enforced rules - they won't always be YOUR rules.

Its about defending against an entity that would harm us all and potentially threaten mankind or democracy . Those are the kind of threats and actions that should be dealt with in that manner. They had many Sci-Fi movies before this one although this is one of my favorites.

I guess one could say that Metropolis was the first true science fiction movie... but I don't think that one really holds up today. This movie does.

Le Voyage dans La Lune (1902)
This is always been my favorite sci-fi movie.
It’s almost scary how relevant this statement is today. After 50 years this message has more meaning now than it ever has.
One part of this speech is interesting. Klattu mentions that in matters of aggression the robot force that Gort represents has absolute mastery over them. It's THEIR decision whether or not to eradicate those causing any violence. TDTESS is based on a 1940's short story by Harry Bates titled "Farewell To The Master." In it, the surprise ending comes where it is revealed that Klattu is actually Gort's slave, and the robots actually rule over the galaxy. A nice Twilight Zone style twist that the movie writers probably felt was a little too extreme for the message from the stars to live peacefully with each other or face the consequences.
This movie may be old, but it’s message is timeless
I was 6 months old when this was released. The line "At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor" AND "In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us This power can not be revoked" The first sounds almost Heavenly, the second sounds somewhat Hellish. What a choice, absolute peace at the price of absolute freedom. And this was at the height of the Korean Conflict (unresolved to this day). "Peace at any Price" Just imagine a mass shooter instantaneously ceasing to exist at the FIRST sign of aggression. ALL national conflicts ending, ALL political aggression over, "road rage" gone? It was in absolute condemnation of our most base "lizard" brain sense of survival and self importance.
The second is the best bit, it convinces the aggressor, not just suggests. Tackling all the road rage might be a bit difficult, it is going on in millions of places wherever there are people.

Profit need not be monetary. One could argue the pursuit of money is very unprofitable when all is said and done.
This movie was one of my many influences getting into film-making/writing, and of course Star Wars. A great film with a great message.
The remake, while predictably inferior, spelled out the message for our growng and plunging lowest common denominator horde. John Clease offered tangible hope when he "Submitted for Our Approval" the idea of our race rallying when faced with imminent demise.. He felt man shined brightest when closer to precipice . . Weather or not it is true, and I have no reason to believe it is not, I cannot support that strategy. In fact, if that's the best Clease has as far as hope goes, break out the drugs cuz we goin; down.
+Robert Erniso It reminds me of I AM ROBOT when the leader of the cybermen tells will smith that they must control humans to protect them from themselves. The aliens in this movie remind me of that as a what if.

I saw this when I was about 8 years old and loved it ifact this was one of my favorite sci-fi films. I also loved War of the worlds, to me they are both great I wouldn't be able to pick. All though times have changed ,I tried to watch it with my 10 year old son ,Ya I had him at 46 he thought it was horrible and boring. Kids today need great special effects. We had to use our imaginations We played Astronaut,army,baseball from sun up to sun down with a taped up baseball and one bat with a nail in it. lol now the ball fields are empty and all the kids are playing playstation. sad. When I was a kid Gemini and Apollo were going on, there was Vietnam and riots too so it wasn't all a bowl of cherries, but I was a kid so those things seemed non existent to me.

A memorable quote of the movie.
"Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection. But we do have a system... and it works."
This quote has stuck with me for over a decade. I screams humbleness. This is how this character earned my absolute respect.
The reason Sci-Fi films of this era especially this film are so beautiful and iconic is because there was no incredible effects to support the movie, at least not compared to today So instead they resorted to dialogue and this movie is coated in it.

Today that little speech from Klaatuu would be labeled as totalitarian and fascist - behave or be destroyed. But try to consider the time this film was made. WW2 had ended only a few years ago, millions dead, many in the audience had lost loved ones in the war, Europe, Russia, China and Japan were devastated. Klaatuu's message made sense to them. The way things are going we may need Klaatuu to return.

Gene Roddenberry always said this was one of his top favorite films. This was Star Trek before Star Trek was Star Trek. How prescient.
people always say sci fi movies from the 50's-90's are so cheesy but god they do deliver strongly on the message...
some trivia to see the guy in the suit with the gloves off google in "Gort without gloves" during filming they almost killed the guy because he had acromegaly was very tall and walking up and down the ramp ruined him--you can see him shaking. There were 2 suits for obvious reasons one with a zipper up the front-the other in the back. The guy was never the same again and died soon after. Also in the book "farewell to the master"--actually GORT is the master. They say when you get back to your master tell them nice things--Gort says you misunderstand I AM the master. That was the final line of the book.

Anyone else notice Gort's arms twitching? This scene took so long to film that the actor inside the suit who was a frail man named Lock Martin began to lose feeling in his arms.
And then we showed Klaatu the historical documents, and his reaction after seeing the destructive power of the Death Star was, in a word, incredulous.
Not only could these humans defend themselves, but they could bring destruction on at least the same scale as the robots.

Which is why their probably leaving us alone (aka we haven't presented them with a threat and if we're smart we never will).
Debonair Damsel Good thought, but we've been under ETs' protection since Atlantis and more reinforcement since after the atomic bomb we dropped in Hiroshima. They use portals to get to us in few hours instead of lightyear travel per say. Now it seems we DO have their undivided attention ever since that monumental yet tragic event. They still know well enough to keep just out of mind and sight to much of the world population (until we finally awaken as a whole to the fact that we are not alone and have never been alone in this universe), but you can certainly feel their influence behind the scenes concerning our governments and their ever-changing agendas.

We are all part of one Universe. It happened much earlier eons when the Atlantians destroyed Muldek planet which was part of the 144 planets of the system we belong too. Now, it's only 143 left, then eons later when we developed the atomic bomb that you've mentioned that exploded in Hiroshima Japan, that had seen and alarmed other galaxies nearby us. They were surprised for 3D humans with lower frequency could develop such scalar weapon thus as. They were alarmed because what we do here on our planet could threaten and spread to their world as well, just like the movie said. You've gotten it right there though. Thank you. One of my all-time favs, the arrival sequence probably best in sci-fi
I remember going too see this movie for 35 cents and a box of popcorn and a Pepsi in total 50 cents and we watched it 3 times spent all Sunday afternoon watching The Day the Earth Stood Still ! Our Sunday Treat !

As always, giving up all of your power to an entity in the name of security, gives you no freedom at all. You can’t have all of both, one of those things has to be sacrificed.
I believe the issue here is what kind of power, and what kind of entity. These robots act independently only in cases of aggression. You see here that in other matters, Gort clearly defers to Klaatu. And unlike organic beings, the robots are incorruptible, and have no other desire or ambition.
You got to figure that 71 years ago in 1951, the tensions between Soviet Russia and the Western nations were considerable. The Red Scare was in full force, and it seemed reasonable for the writers of this film to use an OUTSIDE force so powerful, it could threaten ALL of the world (should we decide to continue to "squabble" amongst ourselves). This was a brilliant concept to be used in any sci-fi movie then, or ever since IMO.
With the recent hearings on UAPs and non-human intelligence, this really serves more as a warning to us than it does a powerful theme.

Words of comfort from an outside source, its better to live by peaceful means than die in a pile of ashes, Klaatu: "take our advice and know these things," "we must break a few eggs to make an omelet, and if we need to break your earth to make peace. So be it"!
I'm 74 years old,,I remember seeing this the first time,,still one of the best sci-fi movies ever !
Me too! 72 years old . I was home alone and watched it on Saturday Night at the Movies. Scared the daylight out me, slept with my BB gun. Michael Rennie as Klaatu was one of the classiest , coolest portrayals in the history of cinema. Glad to hear another old timer enjoyed it also!

Interesting that he used the name Carpenter, too. So many levels to this great movie. Without the time he spent with the mother & child changing his mind, the interstellar policeman would’ve burned it all down.
Michael Rennie was perfect for the part of Klatu.
