    I have been dealing with a faulty cluster on a 01 silverado diesel. Recently bought the truck and needed the odometer fixed to title the truck. The service screen and odometer booth where not working. Was at a loss until i saw this video. After a close examination of the board with an ohm meter . I determond the same diode was bad on my cluster as this video. I managed to get a diode that ohm @ .533 that was close enough to the .60 that yours showed. Installed it and all is good. Powers up and functions as it should. Was also impressed with the mileage being lower than i thought it would be. Thank you for the information contained in this video.

    Thanks for posting this operation. I just bought a 2000 GMC and have a cluster issue. So I’m absorbing as much info on this, before I jump into it. So knowing other issues ahead of time helps so much when in unknown waters. Just to share another known issue with these things, there’s a black & white (ground?) wire going to the main plug on cluster that fails. It goes to the back of the engine some where. Not sure of its failure origins, but wanted to share the knowledge. I made sure I liked 👍 and subscribed to your channel.

    Love your video. I have a 2002 chevy silverado 3500 with instrument issues. Odometer and gear selector not illuminating, diesel gauge not working, trans Temp doesn't seem to work, and temp doesn't seem to work. Battery light stays on. I have the gas gage problem I replaced the gas stepper motor. I tanked the car full and put it in Ignition Position on and set the needle to full but when I shut it off it goes to the bottom right. Could it be the sending unit for a 1999 Buick Regal? And were is that? Thanks!

      Clusters that use air core motors that have gas gauge issues are 99.999% the fault of the sending unit and or gas tank wiring. Not the air core motor.

    Question!!!
    Where can I get the twist sockets for the replaceable bulbs for the 99-02? Mine has the Wagner PC194 bulbs which are soldered to the bulb sockets.
    Someone had replaced one of mine because it was removable, but there are no identifying marks on the socket besides a 6 or 9↕️. It is grey. All the ones I've found online are the wrong size or have the locking tabs in the wrong place.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always had plenty of good cores to pull working ones from. Those bulbs usually last 300k+ miles. I've never needed to track down the socket part number. Sorry I can't help.

      @jonathanst89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffescortlx your good. Yeah, I can buy the replacements for those pretty easily, but I'm afraid the bulbs won't come out of those either. One is blown in my cluster so I just figured why not go to LEDs. Multiple attempts buying sockets to no avail. They all twist too far past the contact strips on the board, if I turn back a little it won't be secure. Does no one change these over to LEDs properly? All I can find are the wrong darn sockets.

      I don't really want to solder anything, I'm not very good at it and I want to be able to easily go back to halogen or other LEDs. I'm just going to keep looking for the sockets, I know they're out there somewhere!

    HI Jeff, thanks for sharing all of your awesome videos and help! I've browsed through several but cant find my issue. Have you seen a cluster in this 99-02 range that displays solid Security light, Low Fuel, and Battery light. But the truck starts and runs perfect (so I dont think it's Passlock), fuel guage shows empty when full, and also have an ABS and Airbag light. Then the security thing drains the battery dead over night. Someone in a forum said they swapped clusters and it fixed it, but my cluster solder looks great with no burns or anything unusual. Thanks so much!

Calibrated all of my gauges and every thing worked fine. When I started the truck, my tach isnt working. Used my GPS to check speedo. Everything is functioning except the tach. I pulled the cluster and re installed the motor to insure that it was seated properly. No change. I have a 1999 gmc sierra and the kilometres only show when the key is in accessory. We know the following works, Speedo, check engine light, oil pressure and battery works. The PRNDL is delayed when going to P. The fuel level and oil gauges doesn’t read. I scanned the pcm and it shows the amount of fuel left in litres and percentage so I know the sending unit works…. The red battery symbol is on when key is to run position. Off position says Security. Is this a gauge cluster issue or wires from pcm to cluster?
    AllData doesn’t show fuel level sending wires from PCM to gauge cluster fuel gauge for some reason.
    When I plug the harness in with key on, the gauges all pin high and fall back down.

    Jeff, I have an 02 Tahoe cluster that is possessed. Nothing works on the cluster except the check engine light, no gauges, no display. When the cluster is plugged in, random things happen like the rear AC blower will come on, the door locks will click, and there are odd noises behind the dash. The battery will eventually go dead, unless I leave the cluster disconnected. I tried reflowing the primary plug header and also the fluorescent display header, but it didn’t help. I purchased the truck dirt cheap, because the PO couldn’t figure it out, and he says the thing only has 75k on the clock. I’m going to try a known working cluster in it today, to see if maybe the issue is in the trucks wiring, as I don’t have a test setup. Any thoughts on this thing? If the good cluster checks out, I would like to send this possessed one to you.

I wish i would have come across your videos earlier, i have bought quite a few reman clusters because i didn't know the causes of the common faults. In the last couple of years i've been self studying electronics design & repair and trying to apply it to what i do in my auto repair shop making a little extra money in the process (which is good because my one man shop barely pays its own bills lol). You should put together a video of your knowledge relating to automotive electronics repair, i would pay for that. I just wish there were some type of class covering clusters mainly, common faults and fixes, and general skills to pin down uncommon faults.

    Hi Jeff,
    I have been struggling with my 02 gmc sierra 1500 gauge cluster for months now. The speedometer and odometer are not working right now. When scanned with a computer it has diagnostic trouble code P0608 which says to check the wiring between the instrument cluster and the PCM. I have hooked up a multimeter from the PCM to the gauge cluster and the wire has continuity in it. I have taken it to a GMC dealership and they said that the speedometer fails their sweep test when they send a command to sweep the speedometer. They said it jumped straight to 50mph when it should sweep all the speeds slowly. They wanted to replace the stepper motors in the cluster.
    Should I replace the speedometer stepper motor? Any thoughts on why the odometer is stuck at 149k miles? Anything else to check? Its funny that the code pulls up for a bad wire connection between the PCM and cluster, but I'm leaning towards instrument cluster problems. thanks!

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds to me the cluster isn't seeing the VSS signal. That gen 99-02, when I sweep with my tech 2, will not do a full range sweep like the 03-06 do. So with it only sweeping up to 50-60mph doesn't alarm me. They use air core motors, not stepper motors, your thinking 03-06 style.

    • @morgandurocher2023
      @morgandurocher2023 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jeffescortlx if the cluster is not seeing the signal, any thoughts why there is continuity with a multimeter from the PCM and the Cluster? Do you think the PCM pin that sends the signal is bad?
      When the car is hooked up to a scanner it can see the vehicle speed, so I know the vehicles computer is calculating it correctly.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have have a different cluster you can plug in for testing?

    • @morgandurocher2023
      @morgandurocher2023 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffescortlx I just barely tested my cluster in a friends truck and the speedometer and odometer are both working on my cluster. So you are right, the signal must not be making it to the cluster. My friend had to head to work or else i would have tried his cluster in my truck, just to confirm.
      I don't know what to think because I stretched my multimeter leads all the way from the wire connector at the PCM, to the wire connector at the cluster and my multimeter beeped with continuity. All I can think now is the PCM is not actually sending the signal through the pin, or there is just enough resistance or something on the wire causing the signal to fade out.
      Any thoughts?

    Hello, i wanted to ask you a question. I have a 2003 Suburban another vehicle cut me off and I had to slam on the brakes I slammed them so hard that a rusted brake line burst at the exact same time my fuel gauge went to the line above "E" and the light came on.
    I thought that the level indicator might have got jammed because of the abrupt stop but my mechanic checked it used a new pump & sending unit and a spare cluster he had at the shop but the fuel gauge still reads at the line above "E" and the light is on. When you start the truck the needle looks like it goes down a notch to "E" the back to the line above "E" at time this occurred I had put 20 gals in the tank. Any ideas as to what might be going on?
    Thanks for any thoughts.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first thing you should do before you start throwing parts at it is hook up a scan tool. You can confirm the sending unit signal and run tests on the cluster. Since the Orange low fuel light is coming on it's probably a problem between the sending unit and ECU.
