    I don't know why people are hating on this burger. I love eating animals, but i also know that it isn't a sustainable food source for am ever growing population. If there was a plant based product that tasted and felt like meat i'd buy that shit up. As delicious as they are, fuck farming animals, they take up way to many resources. The upside would be, since there would be fewer animal farms, the quality of the meat that is still being manufactured would be a much greater quality.

      I have no problems with it. Making meat out of vegetation except of cattlestock is simply an advancement for humanity imo.
      Scientists have spent decades trying to find out how to 'grow meat' through stem cell research and this here is probably the best solution!!
      I'm not saying stem cell research has to do with this, I don't know honestly, but literally 'growing meat' like this solves that issue.
      Achems Razor: Except for looking for a way to replicate cattle, *simply* continue growing plants and make meat out of those plants.

      I can't wait to be able to buy this stuff in a supermarket. I've been having it regularly at a restaurant in my area called Clover that's using it to make a vegan "meatball sandwich." I'm not a vegan (or a vegetarian for that matter) but about a year ago I had to give up red meat for health reasons. I love meatball subs, and it was one of the hardest things for me to give up. The Clover "meatball" sandwich is awesome. I would even go as far to say that with the impossible burger "meat" you get a better rate of consistency with the quality of the product. Some ground beef can have cartilage in it and be too chewy, but the consistency of impossible burger meat is the same every time.

    • @Just_A_Dude

      I look at it this way: I'm an omnivore. I'll eat anything that tastes reasonably good and isn't overly toxic. I have no problem with meatless or vegan-friendly dishes... IF that's what the dish is designed to be from the ground up. It's the idiots desperately trying to convince themselves that processed soy or a grilled Portobello mushroom is a hamburger that I have a problem with.
      If you can get me a veggie-burger that triggers the same cave-man parts of my brain as a real hamburger and isn't significantly more expensive than regular beef, however, I'll be all over it. Especially if it counts as a serving of vegetables!

    For anyone wanting to know how the patty is made:
    * Heme, created from yeast which contained genetic code from soybeans (which created heme). Heme gives blood its color, turns meat pink, and lends the traditional burger its slightly metallic flavor and delicious aroma when it's exposed to sugars and amino acids.
    * Textured wheat protein, which is processed in a pressure cooker to imitate animal muscle.
    * Large baked potato for protein and chewiness.
    * Coconut oil, fat, salt, sugar, additives.
    Once all of these are added together, it creates a fake burger that smells, tastes, leaks and even sears like a burger. The texture is still a little off, having more of a rubbery mushroom-like texture.

    I just had my first impossible burger last week, (I was Paleo for over a year, not afraid of grass fed beef). It was ASTOUNDING how close this comes to the real deal! In a blind test... maybe not side by side, but with an decent interval of time between tasting... I doubt I could tell any difference in taste or texture. I would have to dissect the patty. I'm definitely impressed!

      The chemistry between Adam and Traci, works alright...it's just a generic segment on YT, but they get along as well as Adam and Jamie while the cameras are rolling, which isn't saying much. However, I'm not so sure about the chemicals that went into developing this fake burger though. I mean, what kind of chemicals are used to make orange flavored soda, and to mimic the flavor and/or color of actual oranges...or substitute the flavor and color? What kind of chemicals does it take to make that soda artificially taste as sweet as it would if it contained a natural sweetener that isn't linked to many health problems?

    I cooked the Impossible Burger 2.0 yesterday. It was delicious. I need to wait until it gets cheaper than $3/patty, but it’s easier on my stomach, less greasy, it doesn’t shrink in size, it’s easier to chew (I’m 67 and my teeth ain’t what they used to be), and I love the crispy bits - that’s a more useful description than “comforting,” don’t you think? I cooked mine in a little canola oil in my cast-iron skillet on Med-Hi, like the website recommends. They say not to salt it until after it’s done, but in another place they say to salt it conventionally. However, I followed a commenter’s advice and used msg instead of salt, sprinkling it on the second side before topping it with a slice of sharp cheddar and melting it a little. Mine cooked, again as recommended, for two minutes/side. I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian; I just like the taste and texture, it’s way easier to digest, I don’t have that feeling of heaviness after I’ve eaten it, and no animals are murdered for my eating pleasure. My homemade Special Sauce, which is FANTASTIC, is made of Kewpie mayonnaise, catsup, minced parsley, minced red onion, and jalapeño pickle juice. My cheeseburger had pickled jalapeños, sliced red onion, avocado slices, and shredded lettuce, all on a toasted brioche bun. O. M. G. As I said, once it becomes more affordable, that’s the only burger I’ll cook.

    People who force their CARNIVOROUS pets to be vegetarian/vegan are seriously jeopardizing their health! Both cats and dogs are classified as carnivora. Cats must have animal proteins to survive and though dogs have developed adaptations to a more omnivorous diet, while living alongside humans, unless they are very special cases they will be healthier on a diet that contains animal protein! You can eat whatever you want based on your feelings/emotions/religion/morals but please don't force your beliefs onto your pets!

      The meat that people are currently feeding their cats and dogs is of the the absolute lowest quality. It is made from leftover parts of animals from factory farming that are ground up and made into dog food. And I am not even making this up but when dogs are put down at shelters some of those are shipped to pet food companies, and they use that. So if you gave your dog vegan dog food, I am 100% certain it is better than the food most people are currently feeding their pets.

    I tried a burger like this once- not the same brand, but the same concept- and it honestly did taste like meat. If I didn't know, I'd have said the meat was a bit too lean for a hamburger, as it was a tiny bit dry (but the restaurant forgot to put ketchup on it so that may not be the case). On the other hand, it was a dollar more expensive than a meat patty...

    • @SeanLumly
      @SeanLumly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Nutritionally it is supposed to superior to traditional beef. It has slightly more protein, slightly more iron, has fiber, slightly less fat, has no cholesterol, antibiotics, hormones, viruses, bacteria, etc... And this is comparing a high-end beef. If comparing nutritionally against a grocery-store/fast-food ground beef (that may contain fillers or lower quality beef), it is likely better still.

    When she said that vegetarians would actually find it too “meaty” it was my thoughts exactly! I don’t like the taste of meat and when I have a veggie burger I don’t expect it to taste like faux meat. So really a veggie burger that tries to replicate the taste of meat is actually catering to a meat lover who’s trying to go vegetarian/vegan.

      what
      The point is that, of all vegan dishes, the veggie-burgers (and calling grilled portobello mushrooms "portobello steaks") are the ones that are most perceived as trying to ape a meat dish.
      By comparison, there are plenty of naturally meatless dishes that can be made vegan with some unnoticeable back-end substitutions. Plenty of Indian dishes, for example, can be made vegan by simply cooking them in vegetable oil instead of clarified butter.

      Up to now a burger never was a burger to me without a bit of dead cow in there. All these other options just ruin a perfectly good burger because they don't taste like the way a burger should taste. It ruins the burger experience.
      This seems to be a good substitute or at least gives a good burger experience even if it does taste different.
      Different isn't a bad thing, as long as it tastes good in it's own right.

    Lifelong meat eater here. I tried the Impossible Burger at a burger place near Detroit. It was pretty good. The place I went to made it smash burger style so it was a rather thin Paddy than the thick one here. Tastewise it didn't taste exactly like a ground beef burger but was pretty close and the texture was a little less chewy than a ground beef burger, but was nonetheless a good "meatlike" texture. Overall I would definitely order it again. If they start carrying them at supermarkets that would be awesome.

    Really cool and all but what I want to know is if this actually *healthier* than a red meat burger. Although not that common and expensive, I can buy organic, pasture-fed red meat which will likely be healthy if I eat it once or twice per week and I'll be happier knowing the cows were actually decently treated. Yes, for this I don't have to eat any animals (especially since cows are wonderful animals) but at what cost? Are the components full of GMOs? Does this require more energy and water to produce, pound for pound?
    I'm not a vegan in any way but I also wish people stopped thinking that vegetarian burgers HAVE to taste like meat. I've eaten them a few times and some are delicious. As long as it's tasty by itself, I eat it. It doesn't need to emulate anything.

      It doesn't have any cholesterol, so at least it's healthier in that sense. As for the cow comment, I think you make a great point. However, can we really say we're treating pasture-fed cow's decently at the slaughterhouse when we take their lives and cut them up into pieces? Even if the farmers take great care of the cows, it ends as soon as they leave the farm. I've see said cows up close in the trucks en route to slaughter, and it's obvious they're scared. They're crowded, and a lot of the times dehydrated, overheated (or freezing), and I've even some that are injured. It's heartbreaking and totally unnecessary since there are so many other options.

      seymour engelbert that's a great point and unfortunately I don't have an answer to that and it's up to each individual to analyze it. it's increasingly harder to fully understand what we eat and it's origin - some vegetarian meals are full of GMO ingredients, sometimes sugar or stupidly high amounts of salt, for instance. We've all heard about fake bio certificates as well... I just hope that we can *advance* to a future where we *go back* to some more traditional means of cultivating food or reinvent them to better suit production demands because eating the way we do is harming us, the planet and animals as well.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anthony, there are *so* much more than just calories to this equation. The human body reacts way better to plants versus meat. We digest plants way better. Also, the saying that plants doesn't give you proteins is absolute BS. The proteins in meat are made out of the different amino acids coming from the plants that the animals ate in the first place. Also it doesn't have cholesterol as Seymour said. No this doesn't require more energy or water to produce : it's impossible because it is made ouf of plants, literally the food that the animals eat before we eat them! So that doubles up the amount of energy and water easily.

    To those asking "why" to a vegan meal: I would point to the skyrocketing cardiovascular disease in the developed world, the food scarcity world wide, the coming food crises as the world hits peak water and agriculture, the exhaustion of antibiotics on livestock (just to make them grow faster), and the ethical concern of animals living in cramped, stressed, diseased, unnatural enclosures who then develop diseases we eat (helloooo cancer in the milk and mad cow disease in the meat).

      Hypatia4242 thank you. So many ignorant people in this comment section. As a meat eater who has tried this burger, I can agree that the impossible burger is revolutionary. • @Hypatia4242
      @Hypatia4242 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Dana Kehrley Absolutely. Even people who aren't considering a veggie/vegan lifestyle could look at this as an opportunity to try new things. And if they like it (or the crabless crab cakes, fishless fritters, etc. already on the market) they could do just one meat-meal substitution each week. That reduction in demand alone could improve everything I mentioned above.

      So, here's a legitimate counter-question: What do you do with all the cows, pigs, and chickens once we go all-vegan? Because if we completely kill off our consumption of our livestock, cows will end up either extinct or only living in in zoos.

    • @anxez
      @anxez 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cymon Cyrado Manatees are way harder to breed and maintain, we would have to literally create inland shallow seas for them to graze in, placed in areas that don't see hard-freezes or regular droughts. The real problem is how few babies they have compared to the domesticated animals we currently eat, it would take maybe a century just to get them into a profitable meat to fat ratio, and even then they would never get the birth rate required that one prolonged drought in the wrong area couldn't just wipe out all production for decades, I mean their low birth rate is part of why they are endangered in the first place.
      ... I had no reason to post this.

      as much as practicable = any amount is making you a vegan
      reducing is not a solution, you are just moving a goalpost further down the line where you will face the same problems or even more and you will face a bigger population...
      are you a vegan Nigel? if you are, can you eat meat and still be friends with your vegan friends? if the answer is NO . then it is a religion. it is not a choice or a philosophy, it is a choice. you just want to belong.
      I watched all of the vegan propaganda films, cowspiracy and what the health were debunked by science because they overclaimed what happens in reality with over inflated numbers and taking things out of context. I can actually calculate the production of plants in such a way that it is more detrimental to the planet(water and toxicity wise) than driving a car 100 miles/day. but that will be dishonest.
      I was vegan for 9 months, it made me sick and fat( and yes I did it right ) . and I also love science, and I crunched the numbers of cowspiracy, they were flawed. also I analyzed the claims in what the health, and they were fallacious. from the standpoint of biochemical reactions of the human body, the anthropological evolution of humans and the sheer lies you find in that movie. less than 2% of the claims are barely supported by science( and when I say barely I mean there is a 2 ton elephant balancing on a toothpick)

The person who is trying to stop eating meat, the person who thinks meat is morally wrong, or to fool someone who enjoys meat? I just don't understand who is the demographic for this product.
    Maybe the person who likes eating meat but has been told to give it up for health reasons... maybe them. But then how is this helping them change their lives, they are going to get used to the idea that they can have a burger again, and if they can't get this burger it's going to be a test of their will power to stay on their new diet.

    I'm all down for steak, I love beef I really do but this is so freaking awesome! A reliable source of protein made from plants that tastes and feels like meat will be absolutely crucial in preparing the planet for the massive food shortages we're going to experience very soon.

    • @jasondashney
      @jasondashney 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Vegan "butters" are available. They are made from oils. You can get vegan cheese, but it's not like a vegan every time will say "pass the vegan cheese please". It's just understood.

      I mean butter is butter, whether it's vegan or not it probably all looks the same when melted. i doubt they would go through all the effort to even get vegan buns and then use dairy products for cooking

      All vegans love meat - the reason they don't eat meat is the inhumane way of the keep and slaughter of the animal

    • @ethex74
      @ethex74 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Reviving a dead thread because this was in my recommended, but a lot of people don't dislike the taste of meat, they dislike the fact that it comes from an animal. Also a lot of vegans don't "need" anything to look like meat, but it helps people who are akin to eating meat to adjust to a vegan lifestyle.

    ive had one. its heavily dependent on the sauce and additions.
    not very juicy at all, pretty dry patty.
    a truly good burger is good alone.
    the rest just helps.
    its almost like having a nice steak. but asking for the steak to be cooked well done.
    its dry. and not very good.
    medium rare - medium is the best way to have a steak. all the seasoning you need is salt and pepper.
    everything else is an addition.

      If it was dry, whoever cooked it for you screwed up badly. The Impossible Burger, properly cooked, is very juicy. Most likely whoever cooked it for you forgot it wasn't actually meat, and shouldn't be cooked for as long or as hot as a meat burger.

    I just tried this burger in Fargo (Green House Cafe) Thursday. They have a vegan big Mac with 2 of these patties. HOW IS THIS NOT MEAT?! I went back and bought another Friday. Now it's Saturday and they closed early so I can't get another and I am sad. Been veg 16+ years and this is insane tasting.
    I've seen some people claim their impossible burger was dry. This is due to cooking it incorrectly. They're actually juicy. My cats actually desperately tried to eat some, which made me paranoid this was meat lol. They know any meat in the house belongs to them and/or the ferrets.

    I've had one. I can confirm (as strongly as a confirmation of taste can be) it does not taste like a real hamburger. It's just another veggie burger; nothing impossible about it. The name is clickbait or "misleading advertising".
