I come back to this every few months since late 2000s when I first saw it. This dude is incredible. Such a trippy beauty mixed with virtuosity, the melody is so sick
I remember this from my early 20s when I had only been playing bass for a couple of years, now I'm 36 and I come back to this from time to time. What a natural talent.
Saw this in my first few months of playing bass in 2008. It inspired me so much! 13 years later I'm sitting here as a music professional and student still thoroughly inspired and impressed. Good will always be good. Kudos.
His Pentabuzz strung picccolo style combined with his fingering and phrasing equal one of my favorite electric bass solo performances I've seen/heard-even after five years I will watch this vid. I had the pleasure of finally getting to play a Pedulla a cpl of months ago in Dallas TX. Wasn't a Buzz, was fretted-MVP and was a killer instrument. THANKS again for this post!
what an incredible bassist! he makes me get up and practice! maybe you guys can take a second to check out another solo bass piece? tapping and harmonics solo bass - epic love the finished version has the lighter image...
Are you related to Joseph Zon? I met him at a NAMM show once (early 80s) before his basses went national, and I bought a bass from him. It had been intended for some famous player originally I was told. It had 8 holes in the headstock but 4 were filled in, so it was a 4-stringer. Very heavy bass, but cool sounding. Actually I heard some of your videos. Good job, and playing Zon basses of course. :) I don't currently own one, but it's interesting that I saw them that early on.
This video is a classic in the Bass world! I first saw this alongggg time ago and remember being completely blown away- still am! Also wow those Pedulla basses are icons- truly missed and legendary !
in this case, piccolo refers to lighter gauge strings that can be tuned up to an octave higher than normal guage strings. maybe check out my piccolo bass... solo bass - moon river : )
This is one of the most incredible pieces I've ever heard. I remember hearing this back in the 2010's; one of the first bass playing videos I saw. And I was almost moved to tears with how incredible this man's musicianship was honed.
I love this! I can only imagine Jaco sitting in the audience- after the tune ends, he'd run up on stage and check to see if Schmidtt were actually human, then he'd grab a mic and say "Damn! I'm taking up the accordian!"
Great to see Jeff has almost half million views-when i first saw this video he had around seven thousand. He definitley deserves a large audience. RIP JACO
The word AMAZING has been created to qualify this video. Not only a master performance, this partition can not be played with such intensity in a normal way and touch. This is and will stay UNIQUE. Thanks Jeff.
Michael Manring must be so proud to have you dedicate this work to him. You are both new dimensions in the art of bass playing ... I'm a leftir so I have a bias .. but I'm so intrigued to watch someone play a guitar 'upside down' .. it makes for a totally different set of sonics and scale handling .. makes you more than special .. unique !!
Man, that's one of the most inspiring themes I've listened to... So real... so natural... There's a catch in it every next step... and so inspiring...greetings...!
Fucking amazing!!!!!!!!!!! This guy has everything, feeling (extremely important), dexterity, speed, harmonics, etc. What can I write????? Just Beautiful Music.
I met him a few years back in atlanta georgia at a bass jam in a coffee shop, i had a cup with him and talked with him few about 35 minutes. hes a great guy.
This video was featured in a trending video yesterday. So glad it brought me here. Loved your song and performance. I can definitely hear the Manring influence, but at the same time, lots of innovative stuff going on. Looking forward to exploring your channel!
Many builders do inlaid lines on a fretless but I do believe the Pedulla Pentabuzz (and Buzz & Hexabuzz) all have painted fretlines with the whole fingerboard getting a polyester coating just like the body. It's a fantastic sounding instrument but it's Jeff's playing and feel that make it really sing here.
I just became a fan of this guy. This was great! I`ve never seen a left hand five string fretless bass with an upside-down piccolo string setup before, and the way it is played is just brilliant! It seems that the upside-down stringing of the bass is no disadvantage at all, like some people claim. Great job!
@TheReighnart Yes, most fretless basses have markings of some kind - where the frets would be in this case. Otherwise, there are dots on the side of the neck (invisible to the audience) which are exactly in line with the notes. This is what people commonly mistake for having no markings at all.
@SuperEnigmation That's exactly what it is. I've seen Jeff Schmidt live before, and I saw him use this same bass at the second bass solo night at Freight & Salvage, a year after this video was taken. :)
No, it is. No question about it.
Adam Neely, here You are, let's check wht Jeff isn't playing anymore.
What was this in response to?
Truly a comment lost to the ages.
@@Flaminglog Probably whether this is a bass or not :)
No, it’s obviously whether or not it is a left-handed instrument. It’s a left-handed instrument that was strung right.
Never would have thought I would see a 17 year old comment… and nice surprise it’s from Adam Neely!
I come back to this every few months since late 2000s when I first saw it. This dude is incredible. Such a trippy beauty mixed with virtuosity, the melody is so sick
I remember this being one of the first videos I watched on TH-cam. I was obsessed with this masterpiece. Glad to have found it again!
For me too, and I keep coming back to it every so often, when these melodies randomly start playing in my head.
I remember this from my early 20s when I had only been playing bass for a couple of years, now I'm 36 and I come back to this from time to time. What a natural talent.

heard this the first time in 2007, still listening to this almost 12 years later... good music stays good forever.

Only 4.9K likes, what's wrong with people.... this is one of the best performances I've seen on any stringed instrument. Mind blown.
Just watched an Adam Neely vid where he talked about five string basses, reverse string order, and piccolo strings. The internet is a wild thing.
Still coming back to this in 2024. Thanks for doing piccollo justice and introducing me to pedula
what an incredible bassist! he makes me get up and practice!
maybe you guys can take a second to check out another solo bass piece?

Each time I hear and look this vid, it completely blows me away.
Mind blown...this is trippy and awesome!
15 yrs later and I'm still watching this in amazement...just stunning playing..
amazing how he integrates the harmonics so naturally
Left hand bassist who composes such amazingly ponderous music, and executes it as if it's the simplest thing in the world. Excellent.
This is one of the most incredible pieces I've ever heard. I remember hearing this back in the 2010's; one of the first bass playing videos I saw. And I was almost moved to tears with how incredible this man's musicianship was honed.
After looking at a whole bunch of fretless solos, I end up back here 'cause this musician has such a fresh approach. A truly great sonic experience!
Awesome!I love the stringed harmonics followed by the slide! Just terrific!
Came back to this beautiful piece after many years. Still sounds amazing. Thank you Jeff for your own special kind of musical magic.
I love this! I can only imagine Jaco sitting in the audience- after the tune ends, he'd run up on stage and check to see if Schmidtt were actually human, then he'd grab a mic and say "Damn! I'm taking up the accordian!"

Beautiful! Listening again after years.
I cannot even fathom how he constructs a masterpiece like this.
I am constantly amazed by this performance. This guy is one of a kind~
I member the first time I heard this
Unbelievable, his cool playing is adorable and the sound of that bass is mindboggling..., what a sensation !
All these years I still come back to this video...I hope Jeff is alive, well, and making some music!

Super awesome!!!!! WOW!!! Straight to my favorites!
The word AMAZING has been created to qualify this video. Not only a master performance, this partition can not be played with such intensity in a normal way and touch. This is and will stay UNIQUE. Thanks Jeff.
I can't stress how much I love Jeff Schmidt's solo bass stuff. He's so orginal.
Michael Manring must be so proud to have you dedicate this work to him. You are both new dimensions in the art of bass playing ... That's really something... I'm deeply impressed! Watching this video over and over again...
Quite amazing and beautiful.
Wow. Amazing use of harmonics. Amazing playing start to finish. Incredible.
Man, that's one of the most inspiring themes I've listened to... So real... so natural... There's a catch in it every next step... and so inspiring...greetings...!
Fucking amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I write?????
Just Beautiful Music.
Jeff,U r truly an amazing player, and your music is the most beatiful music written on the bass!
Thanks for playing man!
Just a few things blew my mind in my life and they're all awesome. This is one of those things.
Man he gets those harmonics to sound so perfectly even then really difficult ones.
Thanks Jeff, such a distinct voice.
Fantastic Song, esthetic, sound and artistry!!!
I met him a few years back in atlanta georgia at a bass jam in a coffee shop, i had a cup with him and talked with him few about 35 minutes. hes a great guy.
the visual distortion at 2:35 was so perfect to throw in at that part of the song, it was absolutely incredible
I'm always coming back to this, I can't get enough of his tone.
as well as the cleanest harmonics the intonation is other-wordly. un-funking-believable
Its amazing how much you can do on the bass
Loved it .. Awesome playing ... Thankyou.
Wow. This is just simply amazing. The fretless sound puts it all together nicely.
incredible composition
STOP STOP, this is too much music for my ears. Lots of groove! Amazing
his tones always blow my mind
This is possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. That tone is just wondrous. I now have to buy a fretless bass.

Awesome... He reminds me Eberhard Weber as well... ❤❤❤
Jeff is nothing short of amazing..

One of my all time favs right here.
This video was featured in a trending video yesterday. So glad it brought me here. Loved your song and performance. I can definitely hear the Manring influence, but at the same time, lots of innovative stuff going on. Looking forward to exploring your channel!
Stunning...
How did I not find this sooner. This is ridiculously phenomenal.
Just brilliant. Absolut original
Thanks for sharing Jeff!

You are amazing, i love this sound so much.

@@iliaperez7290 What strings do you recommend? I’ve tried a couple of brands, and wasn’t impressed. 😔
Amazing Mr. Schmidt!!

Absulote fantastic bass player.Bravo this is so fantastic:D!!!
damn amazing. its such a great composition too
no need to call Michael - he played on this same show.
We've played several shows together since. He's been very supportive.
Very unique and unorthodox playing, especially with that choice of instrument. I especially loved the harmonics you were hitting, great job!
Added to favorites, thank you very much
amazing just amazing
i still think this is one of the best bass solos i've heard.
@SuperEnigmation That's exactly what it is. I've seen Jeff Schmidt live before, and I saw him use this same bass at the second bass solo night at Freight & Salvage, a year after this video was taken. :)
