I've been a Windham Hill lover (since the mid '80's) & following Michael's music through the years. Somehow this performance slipped by my greedy lil' ears. At this point in my life, I am a single middle aged Mom raising 2 kids with autism. I don't have the luxury of being able to get away for vacations & my stress level can get very high. I find 2 things in life help me to cope (& sometimes escape into my own head): my own sense of spirit & music. Michael has no idea just what a joy his gift of music brings to me.

Whenever i see a person who is at the highest level of their craft im always astonished that they wear pants, they brush their teeth, they eat food...like they haven't advanced that aspect of their lives and it makes me feel really special because i also wear pants. Ya know?
This man proves that you don't need to play 16ths at 200bpm or slap all the time to have incredible technique. I don't think I've ever spoken a word while listening to this song, how many hundreds of times I've listened to it.
How can this performance even be possible? The incredible memory he must have to be changing the tuning in his strings constantly to feed both the bass notes and the HARMONICs too is insane! Its as if he added 4+ strings and created a new instrument entirely out of the bass sequence of notes/chords. To get so much more out of the old stodgy 4 string bass is amazing to me. I feel lucky to have a recording I played on where Michael accopanied myself with Carl Weingarten.
I'd never heard of Michael Manring before today. This is what happens when inspiration meets mastery of a craft and is played through a beautiful instrument. Sublime... especially his humility.

I love this song. It's really made me rethink my playing and particularly playing a solo. A solo doesn't have to be fast and filled with as many note as possible. Michael's playing is so interesting and the song has such a beautiful melody. It just slowly unfolds. Ingenious!

I had the fortune to watch Michael perform this song in a small venue in Eugene Oregon, from 10 ft away. One of the best evenings of my life. And a very kind and gracious man as well. He can do no wrong.
I bet the designers of that bridge and those tuners never thought they'd be used in such a way. It's really amazing how it works, and how much he has to be familiar with alternate tunings to switch so often and quickly. Pretty awesome.

While not as intimate as this performance, it was a real treat to interact with Michael in small-group settings. He's such a sweet guy and his skills leave me speechless every time I see/hear him play! At once clinic someone commented that what he does "sure beats playing Led Zeppelin covers" to which Michael replied, "I'd probably make more money doing Led Zeppelin covers!". When I first discovered this song (and Michael), I was playing in a band. I showed him to every one of my bandmates and I said, "I want to be able to play like him." Everyone except the singer basically scoffed at me. Michael is one of the main reasons I strive to be a better bass player. I've only been playing for about four years come Christmas, but I think I still have a long way to go. A VERY long way to go. This is, in my own way, an "aspiration chain", of what I strive for: Technique: Michael Manring, Geddy Lee, David Ellefson (for picking), Geezer Butler, John Myung, Martin Mendez Humility for the Instrument: Michael Manring, Geddy Lee Experience: Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle Rather corny way of looking at it, but these are all my main aspirations when it comes to the bass. But I hope that by playing with many different bands and seeing those still alive in concert, maybe I could learn something more by watching them or understanding them as people.
I've been listening to Michael since 1984( I've been playing since 83 ).....he still makes me feel that way. I had the good fortune of meeting him at a small show and watching from this same distance. A kind , gracious, and gentle soul indeed.

Manring helped design that bass. It's called the Zon Michael Manring Hyperbass, so I think the designers how some idea how the bass would be used.

When I first discovered this song (and Michael), I was playing in a band. I showed him to every one of my bandmates and I said, "I want to be able to play like him." Everyone except the singer basically scoffed at me. Michael is one of the main reasons I strive to be a better bass player. I've only been playing for about four years come Christmas, but I think I still have a long way to go. A VERY long way to go. This is, in my own way, an "aspiration chain", of what I strive for:

Rather corny way of looking at it, but these are all my main aspirations when it comes to the bass. But I hope that by playing with many different bands and seeing those still alive in concert, maybe I could learn something more by watching them or understanding them as people.
I've been listening to Michael since 1984( I've been playing since 83 ).....he still makes me feel that way.
I had the good fortune of meeting him at a small show and watching from this same distance. A kind , gracious, and gentle soul indeed.
