    I am about a week away from setting up my first big 75 gallon tank. I got the FX6 because it will be housing my very messy painted turtle. I got it because of its reputation in the hobby and I know it will do me right. May not cut my maintenance down too much but when your tank water is basically your pets living space, toilet, and drinking water, over board filtration is a must!!! :)

    Hey John, great video! I'd love to put an FX6 on my 75g Mbuna tank but I can't afford to drop that much money at once. Instead, I bought 2 Marineland 360s at separate times when I had the cash. I replaced the carbon bags with more bio rings on both filters and if I do need carbon (after meds) I only put it in one filter. Also, I think having a pickup on each end helps get rid of more fish poo... oh, and I have a circulation pump that kicks on twice a day for an hour to help stir up dead zones. As for the video, I instantly knew that you got a new camera. The video was crystal clear. I do suggest, however, that you use manual focus (if available) on the "talking head" section to prevent the focus from switching between you and the tank behind you. Keep up the good work!

    I had the same set up, wasn’t overkill but was a pain to clean that filter for such a small tank. Way more then needed. Was also a disappointment of a filter. Impeller died after a year, fluval would not cover it under warranty because they said they recommend replacing the impeller every year. Get a sun sun, you can replace it just about 4 times for the cost of one of these fx6. Just my opinion

    • @wyzemann
      @wyzemann 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I finally purchase a behemoth canister, my money’s on an Eheim 1500XL. That bad boy makes the FX6 look like a crappy Tetra HOB. It literally allows for complete and detailed customization.
      However, I totally see your excellent point on the Sun Suns, maybe on the HW-704b.

    • @Andricity
      @Andricity 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wyzemann I have whatever the biggest sun sun is, priming sucks and it’s a little cheap but it has been working great. I love the big trays it has. Eheim makes some great products and wouldn’t hesitate to buy them. I have had two fluval 306s and two fx6s, they are no longer a go to product for me. Way overpriced and they get out of Warrenty claims easily such as the incident I explained

    • @UncannySense
      @UncannySense 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I run 2 x sun-sun 304b in series (not running impellers) with a jebao DCP 6500 sinewave pump running 50%@15watts and 3kg Biohome Ultimate, sponges and scubbies for filter media. All this cost less than a fx6 probably half as much. Silent, more filter media/surface area, 2 back up pumps/impellers, 2 UV bulbs if needed, extra fittings for other tanks/spares. Only thing i would change is swapping Sun-Suns for Biopro/hopar/worx filters due to slightly better build quality.

    Good filtration is about how well we filter the water, not how fast or how much water we push through a filter. Although filters improve the clarity of the water, they don't make it cleaner. Detritus continues to decompose inside the filter and pollute the water. In reality, they are nitrate factories. Over filtering is bad because higher flow rates reduces the efficiency of beneficial bacteria and excess turbulence in the tank is stressful to many species of fish.
    The only way to improve/maintain high water quality is with fast growing plants, especially floating plants, and routine partial water changes. Fast growing plants convert nutrients (aka pollution) into plant tissue that is eventually trimmed and removed from the tank. Routine partial water changes dilutes the pollution and replenishes necessary minerals. The solution to pollution is dilution.

    • @KGTropicals
      @KGTropicals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You must’ve missed the part where I said a big filter doesn’t change anything about the amount of work we as fish keepers still have to do.

    • @MikeV607
      @MikeV607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KGTropicals - I heard it...I also heard you need a filter 2x the recommended size. Imagine all those fishroom's running on simple air driven sponge filters. Bigger isn't necessarily better. I hear (er read) many hobbyists proclaim 'there's no such thing as over filtration' .... but there is! It's not better for the water quality, the fish, or the pocketbook!
      Stop the madness. ;-)

    • @Chris-ew9mh
      @Chris-ew9mh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience when you are talking African Cichlids with moderate to heavy stocking levels it really helps to at least double what they normally recommend for filtration. Many fish actually love to swim in current and getting more surface agitation versus less is very desirable. When I rinse out my filter inserts weekly I’m pulling all kinds of detritus and nitrates out of the tank to help keep everything in check on top of water changes every 7-14 days. Much also depends on how much you are feeding your fish and if all the food is being eaten versus rotting in the tank or filters.

    • @MikeV607
      @MikeV607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris-ew9mh Too many hobbyist's echo the 8x to 10x gph relative to tank size "rule of thumb". I maintain that if we're filtering well, we don't need anywhere near that kind of turnover and flow rate. Matter of fact it can be counter productive. It's good that you rinse/clean your filter weekly...I hear of many hobbyists with large canisters that let their filter run for up to 6 months before cleaning!!! I once saw a photo of a 55g with three (3) large canister filters down under! He was convinced that more is better.

    • @catfishcave379
      @catfishcave379 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mi@@MikeV607 - I'm going to go out on a limb... and agree with you! Stop the madness!! If you want great water quality, superclean the prefilter sponge every day. (and waterchanges of course) Remove the stuff from the system before it has a chance to break down. And a long contact time allows the bacteria to convert more ammonia/nitrite each pass. If you want extra movement, add little pumps where you need the circulation most. If you have enough bio media to support 1000 fish, and never have more than 50 fish - 95% of the bio media is unused. And you've wasted space and money.
      Lastly... those fx6s have a lot of void space inside them... they could be designed better. And they don't last very long. If only they were as good as their Aquaclear products. All my old Eheim stuff from the 90s is still running... as is all my newer eheim stuff.
      Lastly, the old "African Cichlid baloney" about requiring overfiltering. If they need it, its not overfiltering. You size your filter system by the fish in it, not the tank dimensions.

    I have a 50-75 HOB on my 20 gallon hex, it's slightly overstocked, but the water remains crystal clear and my nitrates and nitrites are almost always 0 even on water change day.
    When I set up my 100 gallon Bow saltwater tank, I'm setting up a sump and skimmer powerful enough for a 200 gallon tank.
    Less maintenance, clearer water and happy fish.
    IMHO the best is have the correct flow but with a TON of filter media and bio media.

  • @Puma1Sunfire1

    So many variables when it comes to filtration options. So long as it works that is all that matters in the end. Have had a SunSun 304B UV 525GPH on a 29 G tank and it worked very well but it was the ONLY filtration on the tank and it was pretty much overstocked from guppies breading. The 525GPH rating was only accurate when there was no media in the canister. Flow went to 2/3rd flow compared to empty flow rate when new unused media was added and then to 1/2 of the initial flow once time went on and the media got dirty. Other factors may have contributed so I agree with the two times tank size with canisters because once your media gets used it drops to half of the advertised GPH

Upgraded the filter with the filter pro fx6 upgrade kit and even though i have nothing to compare it with i can tell it’s doing a great job and the water is clean and clear (looks like the bottle of seachem clarity i bought won’t see much action) now i wait for nitrate reduction so i can stop doing 2 water changes each week (I dream of this day)

    I used to run 2 fx4's on a 75 gallon planted tank (swapped out the output nozzle for the fx6 nozzle to give better spread and flow, never liked the fx4's output nozzle). Also used an eheim prefilter sponge and the filters ran clean for 6 months (just clean out the prefilter biweekly) could have ran much longer before a filter clean as the sponges werent dirty due to the prefilter

    Hi, I too overfilter. My tank has a huge sump and I just installed an Eheim 2280 filter. Really, expensive but I love Eheim and as you said look after your fish. Also, I have a bit of coverage if the sump pump stops, as I have the Eheim going until I can get a new pump.

    Very helpful video, I’m looking to buy one for my new 80 gallon. I’m just wondering if adding the sponge to the filter inlet is counter productive? We want as much waste heading into the filter right?

    Hi KG can you please tell me where you buy the round suction cup? for the filter tube where the pre filter sponge intake is. I have it installed right now but it’s not straight cause I can’t find the attachment you have with it.

    I got a FX6 for my second tank, a 75 gallon. I was new to the hobby at the time and had african cichlids (water changes were once every one to two weeks). Now I have 3 blood parrots, 6 rainbow bosemani and 1 pleco and boy do they poop a lot! I do love my filter but I dread doing maintenance on it (which I just finished) - will have to get one of those sponges if it really does cut down on filter maintenance.

    1:54 better read the fine print on those specs. I believe the GPH they are quoting is "without filter media" in the canister. So, filter media will reduce flow, even when clean and it goes down from there.

    I was using an Oase biomaster 850 on my 125g for nearly 2 years when it started acting up. I replaced it with a Fluval FX4 which has been doing a great job. I managed to fix the Oase's mechanical issue, so my question is can I go ahead and add the Oase back to the same tank for even more filtration? It's stocked with 2 Oscars (~9 inches), 1 common pleco (~12 inches) and a red eared slider turtle (male, full grown ~8 inches).

    Thank you for your trusted advice I will be purchasing a new Fluval very soon I am sick sick sick to death of dealing with those junk hydor that leak all over the place I have already replace the O-rings multiple times should not have to buy a product that I constantly have to mechanically work on I will enjoy running my hydor filter over with my truck and smashing it to pieces in my opinion there should be a class action lawsuit brought against hydor for selling faulty products and knowing they're selling faulty products

    I recommend to get the upgrade from Pondguru. I got it and it works like a charm. Look up Pondguru's "Pimp my filter" about the FX6. Oh, and thank you, this was the vid when it came out that made me decide to go with the FX6 with my first tank which is a 5' 3" x 2' x 2'.

I thought I needed two FX6s for my 75 gal. and have always wondered about the order of media in the fluval canister. Love the idea of a prefilter .. Will buy one of those today
