    With the filter still powered, close the inlet valve for 5 to 10 seconds, then close the outlet and power off unit. This will lower the level of water in Canister, water will not leak out when valves are taken off. It only lowers it past the lid but much cleaner with no leaks when energy is applied.

    Love the video however there's a bit of a misconception with cleaning with tap water. The levels of chlorine that are in tap water is not nearly high enough to kill the beneficial bacteria right away. On average you would need to soak the sponges for close to an hour to do damage. Now this is anecdotal but I've been rinsing my mech filtration in tap water for years with zero cycle crashes. Check out prime time aquatics on this topic, he has an exceptional scientific deep dive regarding this.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive seen the video, its a great video. But I still dont trust it lol Also since this is a beginner-focused channel I would never advise a beginner to clean with tap water simply because I assume their tanks are still young and immature, and any potential BB loss could affect their tanks.

      @andreanikolic8125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also use tap water. I rinse the bio media in tank water but the mechanical filters I literally use the steam power washer on it to get the shit out and never have cycle crashes.

    🤔 the crushed coral can be added to substrate of the aquarium. It will do a better job of buffering because it will be spread out. The bio- media in the top tray can go in the bottom tray and medium porosity filtration foam can go into the top basket as it should when considering the foams sponges that come with the FX6 filter comes with are a coarse porosity.
    Also a prefilter can be added to the intake to help extend the life of the foams and impeller/ motor.
    Chemical filtration is unnecessary but if it must be used then a quality carbon is really all that needed. Carbon is a natural product and can be bought in bulk.
    To keep the tank in balance then add an additional inch of substrate. This will create the zones needed to properly house both types of beneficial bacteria.
    Good luck with your hobby and your channel.

    Big thank you to you KaveMan- I inherited a 250gal tank w/FX6 a few months ago, it is my FIRST tank ever (I don't recommend this!) and it is such a beast to care for and clean (especially for someone who is 5'1"); the first time I cleaned the FX6, I watched some other cleaning video which DID NOT INFORM ME that the impeller must be removed and cleaned! So today is the first time in a long while that the impeller got a good scrubbin' (thanks to the impeller cleaning video you posted a few months later).

    Dude, hint on putting the FX6 back together. When removing the filter from under your aquarium you first turn off the In Valve followed by the Out Valve. The same procedure when you replace the reassembled filter as follows: reattach the In Valve and then the Out Valve. Now very important, open the In Valve first and then the Out Valve and immediately plug in the filter. It will chug and gurgle and bubble in your tank for a few minutes until the filter gets all the air out of the system. It will then start filtering. The reason why you open the In Valve first is that will automatically prime your canister filter body with water. You only have to independently prime your filter only when you first buy it.
    The method I mentioned works as upon opening the In Valve allows water from the tank to fill the canister body, thus priming it. I hope I explained that to where everyone understands it. As I mentioned I run two of these great filters on my 150 gallon. I also have two Fluval E-Series 300 Watt Heaters which are excellent because they have a built in visible LED thermostat and keep the temp +.5 or -.5 from the setting you select. I run both at 83 degrees. I also have an over stock of Tetras/various species, Severums, Assorted African Cats, Silver Dollars, and 3 healthy Panther Crabs. I decorate with rock caves, artificial plants, and Mopani Wood. I went this route after having 85 African Cichlids in my aquarium but soon realized that they excrete a lot of waste. I sold off some of my surviving larger ones let’s just say, the surviving warriors.
    I really enjoy these videos as they are very knowledge oriented and they are done by someone who has experience and great enthusiasm for the hobby.
    Anyway, try the In Valve method I mentioned and that will save you from having to prime the canister before reattachment. Make sense? I hope so.

    U didn't use enough biome media in ur fx6. I have 5 kilo's in my fx6 and 3 kilo's in a 407 plus plants in a 125 gallon tank and it helps but I do change 60 to 75 gallons of water every 4 days in my tank. Which I have 25 5 inch r better size African chilids. The media helps but don't buy it off of Amazon cause it's way over priced. Go to Green wave engineering. U can buy 2.2 pounds at $ 18 bucks verses 18 dollars a pound. Plus they have fx kits to up grade ur fx6 to filter better. I have coarse and med sponges on the outside of every tray plus fine and floss sponges the top plus 10 pounds of bio media still not enough to get it to zero ppm. At the highest ppm is 60 ppm every 4 days in a 125 gallon tank but most of the time it's a 45 ppm.

    Nice video. I fill my FX4 back up by connecting the inlet hose and opening the valve. Watch down the outlet tube until you start to see the water. You can throttle the inlet valve to slow the water and shut it off as it nears the top. Connect the outlet and start the pump. You'll have a small amount of air come out the return, but your system is primed quickly.

  • @shallahk8403

    You didn’t wait too long, fluval fx is terrible at mechanical filtration, all those big beautiful initial sponges get bypassed like crazy. I’ve had mine for a year, tried every different kind of spine all the same, they stay clean and inner finer filtration by bio media gets mucked up.
    I’ve learned these FX filters are truly poorly designed, yet everyone raves about them. Why? Every time I clean mine out (which I do monthly) all the pre-large particle filter materials even the finer sponges I’ve tried in the outside rings are hardly dirty. Nothing like what all the other canister filters I’ve used in the past resemble, full of gunk fish waste and debri. But the fluval inner ring filter media where the bio materials are held are clogged up and nasty (water polishers and finer filtration material goes in these). Anyone ever wonder why the outer rings have these fins that the more coarse sponge filter pieces don’t fit into? I personally believe it’s how fluval gets high flow on these filters. Water just bypasses most of the initial sponge material byway of these open spaces between the fins. Then that water goes through your bio media and the final water polishers clogging them and your media up terribly and your flow drops to 1/3 the initial at the start after just about 2-3 weeks. A filter this big shouldn’t gum up in a couple weeks but it does because all the true filtration is only in the center of the filter where there is no designed bypass. Yes, my nitrates and ammonia levels are zero and the bio-media is doing its job, but my tank is dirty. Nothing is being filtered out of the water sufficiently, the water hits the bio media but the final filtration can only hold so much gunk as the big rings of the coarse stuff don’t grab onto anything. I have tried every material even floss in these out rings and only about 20% of these materials collect debri after running a month. I hate to say it but these filters are terrible. See how clean your coarse sponges are when you clean it? And now look at how dirty the final inner filter piece is. It should be the opposite. Fluval FX are a scam, advertised as high flow, but only because there is so little true filtration going on. My tank is dirty debri on my sand bed, on my plant leaves, because this filter just circulates the dirty water over and over but doesn’t clean it worth a damn. I use a prefilter on the intake as well and if it wasn’t for it, I’d be cleaning these inner ring pads once a week just to keep up the flow. I’m amazed no one else has noticed this or questioned these water flow gaps designed on these outer rings and why the huge area of the initial filter material remains so clean. Tons of bacterial action, for sure! It works great to keep your ammonia, and nitrates at zero, but oh my does your tank look bad as it’s where all the floating debri ends up that should be going into the filter pads. This design just lets a good portion of the water bypass the initial filter material. You will see! I’m sad I wasted money on it, I love how quiet it is and the initial great flow, but it’s not worth the added tank maintenance and muck, I’m done with mine. Going back to better canisters that have no fancy gaps and truly filter every ml of water coming through the filter.
    It’s sad but it’s true, look at how the flow charts show water movement. There’s no directed water flow through the big sponges, they just pick up extra debri floating around at the edges.

    Should i pour seachem matrix in a bag or just dump it in the tray

    • @KaveManAquatics

      you can pour it directly into red trays because you can dunk the red trays into a bucket of tank water to rinse off, but you cant dunk the white basket, its too big. So use a bag of matrix for your white baskets, then you can just remove the bag and dunk in the bucket to rinse. Does that make sense?

    When my FX6's were new, I couldn't remove the valves from the canister lids because they were so tight! Did you ever have this problem? Someone recommended using waterproof grease ($4 from Home Depot) I rubbed some on the O rings and on the inside of the valve body and what an amazing difference it made! Actually... you can toss out all the bio media in that filter. Bio media in an external filter is not needed if you have a lot of rock work. I have a 125 gallon with about 100 adult African cichlids. For 20 years I only had a big pond pump and powerheads to circulate the water through the rocks with zero ammonia and nitrite. I recently added an FX4 because I feed two big leaves of romaine lettuce every day along with flakes and pellets, my Hot Magnum filter and quick filter couldn't keep up. You can get cheap FX filter pads on Amazon, I can change out all the filter pads for about ten bucks, all three kinds of pads. That's only five bucks a month to change it all out, don't need to even clean them. Bio balls are way over rated, don't need them unless you have a bare bottom tank with no rock work. I also add a big bag of carbon in my FX4 and change out the carbon every month or two. Swapping everything out is quick and easy. I also do a 50% water change every week.
    One more thing, I heard a lady on TH-cam saying that instead of draining your FX with a tube from the bottom she actually would leave it running, close the input valve and disconnect the input hose. The filter will draw air and pump the water into the tank. Sounds like it will work assuming your tank doesn't overflow LOL.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most hobbyists dont have "a lot of rock work" to adequately provide enough surface area to handle the bio-load of a tank, especially an overstocked one. I do agree that bio-media in general is overhyped and I've even used pot scrubbers as my bio-media for over a year and proved that it works just as much as the expensive big-name stuff.
      I now use Matrix because not only does it keep the tank cycled just like the pot scrubbers did but it has also helped in reducing my nitrates. Matrix has the ability to allow anaerobic bacteria to grow and complete the cycle.
      I wouldn't have believed it myself if it didn't happen before my very own eyes 🤷‍♂️

  • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
    @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So... I guarantee you don't need any biological filtration media in that Fluval FX6. I have a 125 gallon tank with around 100 adult mbuna with zero biological filtration. The rockwork in my tank is plenty. I have a 550 gallon per hour pond pump on one end, a 350 gallon per hour powerhead on the other at top water level, and a hot magnum filter on the back at 250 gallon per hour. I have no sump, no undergravel filter, no canister with biological filtration and have zero ammonia, zero nitrite and just a trace of nitrates after running this for 15 plus years. I do a 50% water change per week and change out the carbon in the hot magnum every week, that's it. You have plenty of water flow and rock work in your tank, I'm sure you could totally get rid of that FX6 and you wouldn't have any ammonia or nitrite buildup, all you really need is a small carbon filter like a hot magnum. I'm considering the FX6 or something similar for a bare bottom pool with red tailed cats, with that setup you for sure would need bio filtration in an external canister, but not for a cichlid tank with a lot of rocks. I say trash the bio media and add more carbon or other chemical media, maybe add a polyfilter. I'm actually surprised that the FX6 doesn't have a finer sponge material, seems like the pores are way too big all the way around.

      There is conflicting information about this theory. Some say what you stated to be fact. Others say that one mineral or another can deplete completely before the coral is completely dissolved. In my case, I judge by the fluctuation in PH. once it begins to drop, that’s the clear indication that the coral isn’t working anymore. Whether it’s still there or not 😊

    Your filter media is dirty because you dont have any filter floss. The foam you have in top of your media basket it too coarse and it flows straight through it. If you put filter floss on the top you need to change it once every 4-6 weeks but it keeps your media clean.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Chemical media like Purigen is always optional, never necessary. It will absolutely improve your waters quality and clarity but some people are happy with what they can achieve without it. I responded to your last FX4 comment. Recommended going with the FX4 cause of your big goldfish and pleco 😁

      @@KaveManAquatics Thanks. Saw it and it is on the list of things I'll get in 2025! I visited Strictly Reef in Reno, NV and mentioned that I may have grown out of what the chain stores can provide. They will make a tank that fits me (short enough to reach in, for maintenance, with out a ladder). They will even make the cabinet to match it and put a door on the end for additional convenience in servicidng the Fluval. The salesman at the front counter walked me around the store to show me what they can do. Now that's customer service.
      I found my new fish store.

    That canister is barely dirty.. , if you want botton and middle tray clean, you need filterfloss in the top one. Education, for sure. Great there. But you clean the canister when you notice the flowrate is lowered.

      It was, but it was lowered due to the amount of biohome and crushed coral that was in the filter. I agree it wasnt dirty enough for a full cleaning. But in my defense, at the time I was gauging the proper frequency of cleaning for my tank. Because as Im sure you're very aware, every tank is different. 😉

    I came across this guy purely by accident and I'm glad I did. I don't know what it is about him, I think it's his genuine sincerity about his hobby but he's entertaining to watch and I learned a ton. Thanks man
