I've always been an aquaclear fan but i bought a tidal 75 due to your review and gave it a try. So I replaced the aquaclear 70 with the tidal. I was so excited because of the features. However it's not for me. I started to notice gunk and debris gathering on the bottom of the tank and when I cleaned the filter the media was always clean. I was used to seeing the sponge filthy like the aquaclear. It is quiet until the water level falls below the skimmer then its noisy even though it's still above the water max line. Well anyways one day I noticed the water flow wasn't flowing Ike it usually does. So I checked the media and everything was clean. So I took out the filter and all the debris had built up on the motor and not on the filter. So I had to take it apart and cleaned it. So the filter wasn't filtering the water it was just all getting clogged on the motor. So I switched back to the aquaclear. I really had high hopes but it does have its flaws. Also the "heater holder" is small. I don't know what kind of heater it can hold because the heater doesnt fit. So I still have to stick the heater on the side of the tank.

Just for clarity guys, the bottom flow control isnt a flow control as such, its to control the bias between the skimmer and the bottom input, open = more bottom flow, less skim, closing = less bottom flow more skim. I believe this is correct, maybe someone else can confirm, never seen this filter before. Top dial total flow control.

The lower Wheel slides a plate across the Opening of the Tube to Open or Restrict it. There is still an Open grate to the Right of the Lower Wheel on the 55, 75, and 110. Two fulltime Grates, and an adjustable Tube.

I cannot rave enough about this filter. (Sorry - long post!) Your previous HOB review series convinced me to choose the Tidal 110 for my dream 5ft 100 gallon that I set up during initial COVID quarantine back in March, and I can't thank you enough. Every little fine detail of this filter that you mention in this video isn't just hype - This filter is a workhorse! My favorite part by FAR is the removable media basket - a total game-changer. Makes me a better fish keeper who doesn't dread doing my media maintenance, which makes me actually clean it as often as I should. I added a polishing pad over the original sponge (cut a reusable template from the sponge shape), biorings to replace the media that came with (reused their bag) and tons of crushed coral. Plenty of room! Internal motor is a must in my book, and the adjustable feature helps when needed to hear my TV (although usually it's quiet enough not to matter). I'm supersensitive to sound, and after my initial filter came it had just a little extra hum to it (my family didn't even notice, but drove me crazy). Seachem's awesome customer service worked with me for a month troubleshooting, even sending me a replacement motor to try, then eventually sending me an entirely new filter that is AWESOME (and super quiet!). Great filter - best tip ever! And your website price is very competitive. Thanks KG! (BTW not sponsored by KG - ha ha).

🤔 love the video, great feedback I’m gonna have to try it out. However I think you’re making the wrong assumption about the pump being in or out. I have had several filters with the pump outside of the aquarium and even when the power goes out it has no problem starting back up because it’s still filled up with water. It’s essentially the same as if you just unplug it. The only time it becomes an issue is when the water level drops (like during a water change), at that point it’ll drain and will struggle starting back up unless you add water.

    • @American-Jello
      @American-Jello 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this post was a long time ago, but I think it really depends on the filter. I've had filters that haven't restarted due to the water being pumped out as the power shut down and not having enough to reprime the pump. Everyone has had different experiences, so he's not making the 'wrong assumption' he's just making an observation based on his own (and others, just not yours) experiences.

I just don't want to see that much of my filter INSIDE of my aquarium ! The features sound great, but to me ? It's more about being aesthetically pleasing, and my aquarium looking less 'cluttered up with equipment' ! I'll stick with my AquaClear 70, where ONLY the water intake tube shows, since I have an aquarium background that looks great, and hides the rest of the filter. ( I have 2 of them in my 55 gallon tropical tank that used to house goldfish - hence two filters.)

Poly-Fil, Purigen, Chemi-Pure Blue, and Marine Pure don’t remove green water algae or brown tannins long term. The only all-in-one filter media which does that, plus polishes the water, cleans out detritus, neutralizes odors, lowers ammonia, phosphates, chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, etc. - is Marineland’s Zeolite Blend. Too many good points to list as far as its capabilities, and it’s amazingly cheap.

I’m an Aquaclear faithful when it comes to HOB, love my Fluvals for Canisters, but one thing I don’t like about Aquaclears is the rattling top, have mine off on both, these look like it’ll give Aquaclear a run for their money, especially with that surface skimmer, but wonder how that will work if your water level is high 🧐 the compartment on these looks a bit small too, but if these are built more solid, may give one a try..., any chance of these giving off stray voltage since the pump is inside the aquarium and the plug is not grounded? any input is much appreciated 🤙🏽

My LFS has their water level close to the surface skimmer and it definitely skims crud off the surface. I’ve had my filter for 3 years now and still no stray voltage

I have a big tank (45 gal) that is heavily stocked, and I have gone through a bunch of hang on the back filters that I have eventually ended up discarding for a variety of reasons. I was ready to try something different, and was looking at canisters when I came across the Tidal hang on the back filters. I like SeaChem products in general, so I decided to give the Tidal filter a try. It was literally the last hang on the back that I had not tried. I ended buying the Tidal 75 because I couldn’t find the 55 at the time. And it had the two flow controls. I put the filter on and just used the media that came with it. It worked like a charm. My tanks parameters are fantastic. I did add a de-Nitrate bag from SeaChem because my tank is heavily populated and my nitrates were on the high side of normal, but I kept the sponge and bio-balls and now my tank’s numbers are golden, all the fish are active and my plants are gorgeous. Love this filter.

I've been running the Tidal 55 on my 29g tank for about 4 years now. It's so quiet. That was important for us as the tank is in the living room. I love it. Keeps my tank crystal clear. I love that it restarts on its own. A big deal for us as we live in a building that gets random power outages. The flow adjustment works very well. Two minor complaints....that blue dial!!! why did they do that lol. The other is when the water level dips too low....down about 3" or so, the skimmer will get crazy noisy. Doesn't happen often. I norm keep the tank topped up, but there have been times when I've been sick, and my water change gets extended into a few weeks where it will happen.

How do you address all the bypass? I’ve been using those tidal filters for two years and they have so much bypass it isn’t even funny. I have 55s and 75 s. They have a major flaw that you have overlooked. I was in love with them when I first got them. But I have gotten rid of them and gone back to aqua clear which has no bypass. Sorry you’re just dead wrong, if water bypass is the filter elements the filter is useless! Come on this is been well known by aquarium hobbyists for a long time I just don’t understand you don’t know this

  • @Thunderfoil

Sorry to disagree with some of these comments. I did my own TH-cam review on these Tidals and was all excited at the beginning. Did some mods too. I had two Tidal 55 running on a single 55 gal tank with 5 big goldfish and 2 bristlenose plecos. Otherwise bare bottom tank. Ten months later, I removed both of them and here's why: 1/ the volume filtration capacity of the box itself is small as compared to other filters 2/ the underwater motor and impeller is under the water level. Yes, this will make it self-priming, but all the uneaten food and detritus accumulates quickly and sometimes the motor won't re-start unless you take the whole motor enclosure apart and clean the impeller, which is a real pain. If you have fishes with high bio-load, you are better off looking elsewhere. This is my honest opinion, not trying to put anybody down.

It's a nice set up but I also hate when it runs low on water because it tends to start gurgling faster than your basic hangovers plus you are right if you want the flow consistence you must take out the motor and clean it especially if you have a heavy stock or planted planted tank BUT you gotta do the same on most filters, in all its a pretty good filter, I give it 8/10 😉

If the pump is in the aquarium, how does it prevent debris from messing it up?
How much can the flow be slowed down? Say you get the 55, can you make it suitable for something as small as a 20 gallon long?
And are these easy to make cherry shrimp safe? Can you put something behind the skimmer to prevent the tiny shrimp from falling in?
Lot of questions but I'm definitely curious about this filter.

I've used Tidals for almost 3 years and I love them for all of John's reasons. It's quality, reliable, easy to maintain, and quiet. The only tank I think it would not be a good solution on is for breeding anything with very small fry. Although you can put a prefilter on the lower intake, you can't on the skimmer and it also intakes water from the middle just below the motor housing and that can't be covered easily either. But for all others its awesome.
