Great video! I thank TH-cam's algorithm for this recommendating your highly opiononanted (and highly accurate) review I've been playing Metaphor for the past 2 weeks or so, clocking at 40 hours and, since the start of the game, I noted that Atlus did play safe with this game, and by doing so, it had to use well and expand little on its roots, still, it does not disqualifies Metaphor as a great game. Bravely Default did go wild on the formula and capitalized on it, it had the overture to do it, they weren't the studios main games as Final Fantasy is to Square, but derivative from Tomoya Asano's mind in a smaller unit. BD was a product refined from Final Fantasy Four Heroes of Light and branched into Octopath Traveler as well, and by no means these are bad games, quite the contrary, all of these are great games (FF4HoL, BD1 and OT1). Katsura Hashino inherited from a great gameplay base in SMT and Persona social aspects, everything we can call "modern Persona" comes from him. Metaphor is Atlus opus, despite the company insisting in calling it "another franchise parallel to SMT and Persona" and had to play safe by being so. It's job system comes a lot from recent Etrian Odyssey (God I'm old, EOIV is 13 years old, EOV is 9....) in highly specialized archetypes with some customization allowed, and the quickness to change like Final Fantasy's job system sums a great mix and huge hit IMO. It will scratch my itch for job system for some time hahahaha Just venting here, in no way I'm against your point, quite the opposite, I'm on it 100% hahahaha it's quite nice to see someone who looked to Metaphor through similar lenses as me (:
Thanks for the comment. You're right, the comparison between Metaphor and Bravely Default isn't exactly one to one and maybe it's unfair to compare them in such a way (I.e. $$$$$$$.) The point I was trying to get across was the creative differences between the two. Metaphor is derivative of SMT with the only real thing differentiating its gameplay being its job system. Which is just a different way of doing the same thing, which doesn't make any sense but it does! BD is derivative of Final Fantasy, but there's a concerted effort to stand out with its eponymous combat system, and I think it succeeds more at that than Metaphor does. I also think Metaphor is a great game but not really because of any one thing it does. It's a great game because SMT and Persona are great games, its story notwithstanding.
Very good criticism!
