  • In the past 4 weeks, we have had the unique opportunity to test out a $35,000 VR camera. The Kandao Obsidian Pro was interesting to try out in the field. We took this 30 pounds of metal EVERYWHERE in real-world scenarios, in different locations from Yosemite National Park to Laguna Beach.
    In this video, we will show you our results in comparison to the Insta360 Titan 11K VR camera and the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K with Entaniya Fisheye lens. We will list all the pros and cons of the Obsidian Pro to help you decide if you should invest or wait.

    Fantastic comparison!
    I’m very curious as to why the Ursa+Entaniya performed so poorly compared to the other cameras. The Obsidian Pro has almost the same sensor size as the UrsaMiniPro12k and the Obsidian Pro’s lenses have almost the same angle of view (195°) as the Entaniya HAL200 (200°).
So theoretically, if you take a center crop of the image, which you seem to have done, the Ursa should look better than the Obsidian Pro since it has a much higher PPI and thus more pixels per degree of AoV.
    There must be some other explanation. Any ideas?

      The idea of depth-map base stitch might be able to do something like this as they are adjusting the stereo base using depth-map and the depth budget can be animated.

  • @bingobriano6021
    @bingobriano6021 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    WOW cool! Clearly image quality would be great but yeah my first thought was the IPD distance would be too far and that things would look the wrong size. I'm still only learning but it seems odd to me that a company would invest so much RND into a really expensive camera that has such obvious issues with close up 3d and the hyperstereo. I can't imagine post would truly fix the issues either as we really need to shoot 2 images as close to human eyes as possible. That's why I love my k2pro!!!

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes K2Pro is great - just shot this with it: th-cam.com/video/ivn0J_6PJVs/w-d-xo.html - this review video focus on the hardware as their stitcher software is not ever out yet. So we don't really know if that large IPD is really large IPD - as look like from the Mistika VR panel with Dan, their software adjust the IPD back to normal before stitch alignment - there are a lot AI in the process before even running optical flow. So I will have an follow up video focus on the software when they release it to the public (or hopefully I can get a beta version soon but still radio silence so far )

    • @bingobriano6021

      @@hughhou Oh wow, I love dance in VR... its probably my favourite thing to watch in VR!!! I'll watch this tonight! I actually stopped using Mistika as the preset wasnt giving me an accurate image shape, it was close but not perfect especially around the edges, I feel it was squishing 200 into the 180 but perhaps there was something else I could do to fix it. Anyway I recently shot a dance video myself with a ballerina and lots of smoke and mirrors but I edited it as source fisheye in MXK200 format which works on the deo player but nothing else. So I think I'm going to have to give Mistika another go if I want to get it onto youtube. Did you have any issues using Mistika for the K2pro? Thanks Hugh!

  • @BenEncounters
    @BenEncounters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am trying to understand something. So what are the reasons of super high-resolution cameras if most headsets have lower limits? Is it because downscaling still gets a better quality or is it because it is for reframed purposes mostly?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Capture more details meaning your picture look more real life. GoPro 4K is no where capture to a RED - for that reason. Sensor capture, color rendering and sharpened will all be improved as source resolution is higher

    • @3dsilentium419
      @3dsilentium419 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is simple. In VR glasses, only a section of the total resolution is displayed. Example: If VR glasses have a field of view of 90° horizontally and vertically, then the viewer looks at an image of 360°/90°= 1920x965 pixels at 7380x3860 pixels. This is just a TV picture in FullHD horizontally. Therefore, videos for VR glasses should be output at least in 8k and recorded with 12k.

    i use Quest 2 to view VR videos. I'm now using Vuze 500USD to take videos, but the video quality is not high 2k x 2k at 30fps at 360 VR video. Should I upgrade to 6k x 6k or 8k x 8k or even 12k x 12k? I'm worried that 12k x 12k may be too high and the high resolution video may not be benefited on Quest 2. Am I right? Hi Hugh,I am interested in the Kandao Obsidian. I wrote to the sales department and never received an answer. Also, I have not received any information about the service, how to repair or troubleshoot in the event of a fault of the camera. No response from the company. That doesn't make a good impression. You should mention that. My experience is, cutting-edge technology without service is expensive and unusable, as there are always some problems within the warranty. What about the warranty at Kandao? Do you have more information?

    Why 12k recording. The answer is simple. In VR glasses, only a section of the total resolution is displayed (FOV=Field of View. Horizontal: Valve Index 130°, Quest 2 110°. Vertikal approximately 60°). Example: If VR glasses have a field of view of 90° horizontally and vertically, then the viewer looks at an image of 360°/90°= 1920x965 pixels at 8k video playing with 7380x3860 pixels. If you could watch a UHD television picture in glasses, the glasses 3840 would have to be able to output horizontally, which is possible today. For the output video, this means a resolution of approximately 15,360 pixels horizontal. However, there are still no VR players and the internal hardware of the VR glasses cannot process this data. With 8k videos, the output is just a TV picture in FullHD horizontally. Therefore, videos for VR glasses should be output at least in 8k and recorded with 12k.

      There is - using fovated render test like the Pimax or using pixel breaking tech like what Beijng Olympics did (8K live with RED V-Raptor) - all have special player tho. I think the player will get adopted hopefully soon by Meta Quest TV.
