I’m 25 and Being bored as a child (without a cell phone and barely a computer) always forced you to have an imagination and sparked creativity to go find something to do, and that just doesn’t happen for me anymore because I’ll go straight to my phone. Can anyone else relate?

24 and it's exactly the same for me. 600%. And now I've gotten scared that even if I give up my smartphone, even just for a bit at a time or all together, it might not help me get my creativity back. I feel like I'll always just be 'behind' now

I'm 25 too. I spent so much time as a kid outside, my tiny garden felt like it was acres wide. Everything was so enchanting and brand new everyday. Luckily my phone isn't attached to me anymore, it was as a teenager. But now I spend my time housekeeping, cleansing, making things, painting and a lot of time in my garden!

A cab app, a GPS enabled map app, an online payment app (google pay or something like that) and a portable hotspot bundled in a rugged flip phone .. that all I need to be it my daily driver but, such phones are not widely available. However, there are mobile OS like "kai OS" that pack these features.... so, there is a possibility but, again, the cost of those devices are expensive

Nothing angers me more than seeing a baby or a toddler with a phone planted in their face. How do parents not realise what an affect that has? When we watched tv as kids in the 90s, it was far away from us. No child ever sat directly in front of the tv for long, or we would have been told it's bad for our eyes. But yet now, babies have phones held up to their face and no one blinks an eye. It's terrifying and sad :( No one thinks about a child's brain, eyes, lack of imagination and development due to this.

I feel the same way I babysit for a couple of friends of mine and the one-year-old likes to watch was on my phone and I always hold it in arm’s-length away whenever she’s in my arms and I have something playing because I know it’s not good for my eyes to be so close to my phone let alone her little eyes.

    • @ToxicEyes1010

You are so right. My sister-in-law's kids start their day and end their day with phones in their face. I try not to make a big deal about it but I can see the effect it has on them. They get fussy when it dies and throw tantrums, even if we have the exact same netflix show on television and now they "can't sleep" without it. Phones are temporary babysitters imo. It definitely makes me uncomfortable, but it's cemented the fact that my children will use a phone when they can pay for it themselves.

It you cant completely give out your smartphone try this:
    - stop paying for 3G ( that way when your outside of your home you cant use your phone for much except calls and taking pictures)
    - when you are at home put your phone in a drawer when you don't need it
    - delete the most addictive apps and yes that includes youtube as well 😤
    - forse yourself to not touch your phone for at least an hour after you wake up an an hour before bed
    - always log off of apps after your done using them (some apps like messenger don't have the log off option but if you go in your settings and clear the catche of the app it will automatically log you out)

I'm 16 and I'm getting rid of my smartphone in 2021. Over lockdown I really realised how dependent I have become on social media and Ive decided I can't go on living on a screen for 6 hours + a day. Maybe I'll come back to this video at the end of next year and give an update :)
UPDATE! Best decision I've ever made, since getting rid of my old phone I've been able to spend my time making art and music, met some amazing friends, and I got better grades than I could have imagined for my GCSEs in the summer. Also in general I just have more time to think and I feel a lot more at peace with life, and can prioritise what matters. Getting rid of my phone obviously hasn't solved everything but it has changed my life and I really urge anyone who is thinking of doing the same thing to do so. Honestly just stop watching youtube videos about phone addiction and do something about it yourself, you won´t regret it!! xx

Like, I will sit and just watch my chickens or cats or hell, the leaves falling from the trees but a four year old needs cartoons at ALL HOURS?!

When I visited my partner's family in upstate rural New York, I had NO service and I chose not to connect to his families wifi. I had the best week I've had in years because I was forming real bonds with him and his family, experiencing a new place, and enjoying myself. The only time I was on my phone was to take photos (I opted not to take my camera, otherwise I would have used it instead), check the weather, or read. I think my screen time was 30 minutes at most that whole week and it felt amazing, and I didn't miss a THING. I've also limited how often I am on social media and when I am "allowed" to use it and it's felt nice. Thank you for this video! I was thinking about your videos this morning and I take this (and the new moon!) as a sign that I should limit more.

A lot of the things we use smartphones for are optional. The device itself isn't bad - it's the way we use them. You don't have to justify having one or give it up to take steps to adjust the way you use it or rely on a smartphone. If it helps you to switch to a different type of mobile phone, do it. If not, don't. Everyone is different and we have different needs!

I don't really think about this stuff a lot but it's always really interesting to me to hear that other people just don't do those things!
I'm definitely older than you, and smart phones came into my life at a later time, so I'm not sure if that's part of why the relationship to the smart phone is just so different. This was a really interesting video!

I definitely think people should have 'no screen' weeks to bring things into perspective every now and then. I delete all my social media for 1-4 weeks every now and then and than helps a lot in resetting my relationships with apps once they start to become toxic again (by design). I'm attached to Instagram way less, I don't have the hardest time not using Twitter. The only app I'm still on a lot is TH-cam. Which is definitely something I'm trying to work on since it does eat up your time no matter how much the content is educational or entertaining.

I support this SO much! I mean I personally am really into this "stop scrolling, eliminate the tech/social negativity" movement, but what's most important is that you found this and did it in the way that is so positive for you!! I keep hearing about people doing this brick phone route, and I admire that so much! I think there are so many people who should try this and whom it could really really help!
For anyone who's confused and torn about this whole thing: I'm actually in the "still have a smartphone, but not social media" camp - I find the planner, camera, music, audiobook and texting functions to be positive things I don't feel the need to give up, but I'm pretty close to just deleting all my social media. You don't have to completely go brick phone if it will create more stress for you than good, BUT you HAVE to be honest about 1) how much time you're spending "scrolling" 2) whether it's positive or negative for you to have a smartphone at all and/or use certain apps. I know many many people who it's a self control issue where, they can't just delete their social media apps or whatever, if they have a smartphone, they'll just get them back. In that case you should 100% use Harmony's guidance and try the brick phone route. But just because I never liked social media and I don't personally feel the need to use it all the time, I'm not ditching my smartphone, because i use it more as a device, and that's a route you can take if it's positive for you! I personally find texting to be positive because my friends I text with are a source of joy, but someone else might find texting to be addictive, negative, and contact with people who bring them down - you have to do what's best for YOU. I really support anyone who wants to give up their smartphone, but just wanted to mention it's not the only choice between cold turkey and staying a slave to it :) If you're very honest with yourself, you can keep the elements that are not coping mechanisms/distractions.

I just recently left WhatsApp and Instagram. Initially, that was one of my main thoughts too, but I sent out a message to my contacts saying I'll be available through text, or email, or even video call (Zoom, Duo, etc) and I have started to mainly focus on having in personal relationships. People who care about you or want to meet with you in real life WILL make the effort to text, call, or even email. I have had three in-person meetings with people I hadn't seen in months (its been a week and a half since I deleted it all) because social media creates such a false sense of closeness, in each meet up we spoke for 2 hours straight, just catching up on life. I realized how much I missed out on, how pressured social media makes you feel to look one way but secretly you're lonely, etc. Don't let that hold you back. My struggles with contentment, comparison, and even trust issues have decreased immensely since getting rid of those apps, my relationship feels more secure than ever, because I'm not constantly comparing, my thoughts don't taunt me the way they used to, and I have gotten to do numerous DIY projects in place of waiting around for texts, or posting or scrolling through media endlessly. It's possible and it is truly life-giving. Give it a try!

I'd struggle to give up my smartphone but not because I'm addicted to social media (I don't have any!), but because I'd feel so anxious without google maps (I get lost easily) and not having access to my emails in case anything urgent comes in. I also quite like having the option to take notes and to use certain mindfulness apps and to also look through pictures when I'm feeling sad/ anxious. I really like googling random things when I'm out and about too (helps me learn about the world). Smartphones are so much more than social media.

But I agree a smartphone is a lot more than social media if you get rid of social media than really your just carrying around a pocket sized laptop. And sometimes having access to internet, photos, music is really good for people with anxiety. I like to have access to my bank and maps all the time. Second is the group of people whose only internet connection is through their smart phone bc of the high cost of internet service in some areas, or they live in their car or an RV or somewhere else that doesn't have an internet connection. Then there's the group of people who live in areas that lack certain support systems / communities like LGBTQ+ communities, disable communities and minority communities and those without these support systems irl rely on their connections via social media to their communities. Smartphones and their negative effects can be overcome with willpower and boundaries. Harmony is always doing a change. It's right for her like she said. I think it's better to use discipline with using social media and keeping the advantages. She'll have a smart phone before a year's up. Lol I use the phone for an assistant.

If you can't get rid of your phone but wanna change your relationship with it, there are apps you can get where you can set time limits on how long you're allowed to use different apps each day. That way you can cut down on social media, while still keeping your smartphone for the practical/actually important stuff

    I deleted Instagram, snapchat tiktok
    and other social media platforms.
I still use TH-cam but I make a playlist of the videos I want to watch (for example inspiration videos and witch videos) I only watch the videos of my playlist and I usually only add 2 per day. this way you prevent watching non-stop and you only see what is really important to you.

This video taught me to allow myself to think and let myself think and feel to work through my unresolved issues/trauma. It's the least I can do for myself. Since then, I've been spending less time on my phone and more time reading books and just feeling and not distracting or burying like i used to. Thank you Harmony.

I personally hate talking on the phone... it's usually just "uhhhh...yeah"'s all throughout the conversation, and I find it super awkward even if I'm talking to my fiance or parents. Might be my anxiety though, lol.

I think that’s another example of how phones effect us and our need for constant stimulation. We get uncomfortable during awkward silences now bc our brain is always trying to fill the silence w something. My friends and I call each other and sometimes we sit in silence doing our own thing and I love that so much

I don't have a problem minimizing my relationship with social media. I have a problem with minimizing my relationship with youtube. It is literally the one thing that I do when I'm bored. I have Netflix but I hardly ever watch it. All I stare all day is youtube. It's super unhealthy and I need to get myself together!

When I made the "life change" of going vegetarian I made sure to give myself time to work through all the foods and experiences I would miss when I gave up meat and "say goodbye" to those things which helped SO much with that transition because there were fewer surprises and I wasn't tempted to give up and go back to old habits. I'd recommend that to anyone who wants to try giving up their phone as well! Noticing what things you rely on your phone for and planning out how to do those things without a phone could help you feel less like you're taking a big, scary dive. Stay well, friends 💜

Earlier this year I went through the social media accounts which no longer served me and have proceeded to delete them (it’s been a slow process for no other reason than I just don’t remember to delete them). While I’m unsure if I’ll give up the smart phone soon (although I plan to eventually) I already feel free of technological obligations. Thank you for sharing your journey!

This video really speaks to me. I have been deleting and redownloading apps for months now. I’ve been an influencers on Instagram and TikTok for years now and now my sole income is Only Fans due to losing my job in the pandemic so I find myself being on my phone for 70% of the day even though it feeds into my severe depressive disorder. I want to do this once my contract is over. Thank you for inspiring this change.

I want to do this so bad. I have adhd I'm completely aware of the fact that I have a smartphone/social media addiction. On one hand it helps me to do simple tasks because it's easier for me to do the dishes or brush my teeth with a video playing. But on the other hand I don't read anymore, I can't even concentrate on most video games and I used to love writing but didn't write anything the past years. I hyperfocus very rarely since using a smartphone. It is an aid of some sort but also something that makes my life so much worse. I feel like it would be easier to give up my phone if I wasn't living in the city (had to move here for job) and could go back to a more rural area again. Idk. Giving up my smartphone is definitely the goal but my adhd and my current living situation are making this really hard. But this video inspired me and I think I'm gonna delete some apps and try to put my phone away when I don't need it.
