In the Caribbean, our watercress is almost 3 times as long and thick stems and we absolutely love the thick stems, which are totally crunchy and water filled great source of insoluble fibre and water rich. My baby loves the couch of those thick stems which are like 5 times as big as those!
Nice vid. Here is another tip. If you get WC with roots, don't throw it away or even compost it. Plant it in some decent soil, and enjoy another batch later. Can be done with Celery and many other vegies as well...
@@doratruenorthtribal6679 go pick it! I've done it my whole life. Now is the time. I just picked a big batch yesterday. We eat it fresh with bacon crumbles, bacon grease, and chopped onions. Best salad ever!
The better way to store the water cross is to wrap it in a paper towel and then put it in that bag and paper towel or dry out the moisture so the water cress will last longer same thing with any green like kale Romain, lettuce, spinach, etc.
I recently found out that watercress is considered the number 1 green for nutritional value. When I tried it I found it a bit too peppery and spicy for my liking. Your 101 series is invaluable because it offers alternative cooking methods. I can't wait to try this salad recipe.
Try to look for thicker stems, those may likely be more water rich. Strange hearing people describe it as peppery. It actually has a punchy bitter flavour. Trust me, we eat alot of pepper in my part of the world lol
Same, has highest amount of vitamin K, just bought my first three batches today, will eat it diced with tuna, and as well as with avocado, maybeashed potatoes
... just wanted to share. Dani, your channel had opened up all kinds of healthy meal possibilities for me, and the people I train. Thanks, and keep them coming.
Subscribed. You've informed me on how to select it in the store, prepare it, store it, and why I should eat it!!!! You probably told me more than that. ☺
I cooked some cubed turnip roots, then added them to sautéed watercress. The contrast of mild turnip with watercress was absolutely a match made in Heaven.
once I couldn't clear my lungs for over a month. I read watercress was an expectorant and bought some at wholefoods. I juiced it and added it to some homemade chicken soup. I was coughing up goo for days. It was great. too bad I have no energy to even make it to wholefoods now cause I need it again. the herb pharm stuff I have is ok but I need more.
Hi, I reside in Virginia, and all my country raised friends would talk about picking creasy salad by roads, streams, rocky wet terrain, slicing off the tops so it would continue growing so they could return to get another harvest. Just picked up 3 lbs of watercress for $4.50, not sure if this is a good deal as I've never had this before, and going to make this recipe for breakfast, followed by the soup for lunch. Using dried parsley instead, as I don't have fresh on hand. thank you Dani !
Shared, uprated. All the cresses are great, all the varieties. Very nice to show a light vinaigrette with honey. Really softens and heightens it. Yay, cress!
Check TH-cam so you can see how the Chinese people eat it, and cook it because you can eat it like a meal or you can eat it as a salad, or you can use it like a spinach you can mix with ground beef or ground chicken, chop watercress in small pieces and mix it with ground beef and make like ground beef patties. You can do many things with watercress and it is excellent for your blood. We also eat it like salad, just wash it very well and put it in a plate you can cut like a kind of like a small pieces and then just add some of the pink salt a little bit and a little lemon. You can also chop fresh tomatoes and mix it with that watercourse
that was a super easy recipe. I've been struggling with my water cress and wondering what to do with all of it. This was informative and clean and delicious. Thanks Dani. God bless
Okay, Now I must try it for the 1st time. Thanks for the info and please keep the 101 series coming for those of us who dont think to look up informative info on clean food ourselves.
thanks for sharing all the information.... I remember eating watercress since I was very little. My Dad introduce me to this delicious plant. We never bought it, we would get the wild ones at the creek, however never knew the nutrients in them.
I don't think I've ever seen this in my one horse town, but if I can get the plants from a nursery, I'm going to buy some and try it, which would probably be better anyway. Thanks, Dani.
Thank you for sharing. Up until now I didn't know there are other types of watercress. I only kind that I know is called Wild Watercress (The darker color one - the one on your Left). Loves Watercress whether it's raw or cooked. This vegetable taste good and healthy.
Thanks for the recipe. I love watercress and want to start some outside this spring. Your information about the stems is very helpful. However I am MOST impressed by this video by you. You seem ready for the FOOD NETWORK girl!! Impressed.
Just discovered this stuff in the store yesterday, was excited to try it when I saw all the vitamins listed on the bag. Sadly, I dont like the taste, but will continue to eat it because it makes me feel great :)
Same. Sugar is a toxin and extremely destructive and an invitation to almost every sickness. But sugar makes food taste great. Hence why the tastiest things have the most sugar. It's a sacrifice ppl make, their health for taste. On the other hand veges, most healthy, have little sugar and offer best health benefits, but again... sacrifice taste. But the returns are vast. Especially not having big medical bills, looking ugly, or being limited/disabled in later years.
It's been my experience as a type 1 diabetic, that it was only ever refined and depleted foods (foods were grown in depleted soil) that caused me problems. After my pancreas failed (and stopped producing insulin,) I quickly found out that it wasn't necessarily raw cane sugar/fruits, wheat, and potatoes that were the problem, but it's in how our food is refined and stripped of vital nutrients and minerals which makes it hard for our bodies to produce healthy cells and causes problems with metabolism. We each have our own body type and dietary preferences. The main 3 are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. As a Vata body type, we live pretty well off of fruits, and we have a preference for fatty, salty, and well seasoned foods. That's how Vata body types are designed, with high flowing, and quick digestive systems, but limited energy stores. (Other body types do not fair well, or fair poorly, when they eat like other body types.) As soon as I switched to whole foods, besides the time (years) that it took to heal, all of my problems went away, and I ate nothing but fruits (citrus) for a whole month. I never bought into what medical doctors were told nor into the general misinformation that we were taught. The human body, brain, and it's cells' natural state is towards health. Our body's, brain's, and cells primary energy source, is glucose and needs to be balanced with a healthy source of nutrients in which to create new body cells. Whenever we deviate from that, that's when we begin to experience problems as a society. Our ancestors didn't face the problems that we do today. Nature wasn't the problem. It's only been our refinement and processing of ingredients (and the stress that we put ourselves through on a daily basis,) that begin to break down our bodies and lead us away from an optimal state of health. Each body is different, only you can know for sure what you need to function at optimal health. You can tell by the way your body responds and feels after eating certain foods that what you're giving it is correct and appropriate. 😊🌎✨
Glad Ive found your channel. I learn new things about food I never knew about. And best thing is it makes me want to actually try some of the foods you mentioned and Ive been "picky" to try. Thank you & So looking forward to more of your videos!!!
Thanks for the info...I've always walked right by the watercress (when I could find it) in the supermarket. That salad looks interesting. I just might try it.
***** I actually found the Living Upland Cress brand and popped some of it into a spinach salad the same day. It's not bad at all! Thanks for the video-I would have never tried watercress without it.
The best stuff is in the stalks. They are all edible and not too hard. If it's hard it's because it was not properly grown. Make them into soup taste better. Grounded pork with onion, fennel seeds, salt, paper, one tablespoon of vegetable oil and little Ginger. Make the pork into small balls. Cook the soup then add last the fresh watercress and stir for one must on high heat. Use Chicken broth for better taste. If not just water would do. Add some white cooked rice into the soup when you serve.
I remember eating this when I was a kid in my home country but I don't see it at a grocery stores. Is this has a sour taste? And I like the blooper(s) lol.

+Clean & Delicious I like my watercress raw and crunchy. Is there no nutritional value in the thick stems ??
Thank you
Yumm, you are making me hungry. Although Upland Cress and Water Cress are similar, keep in mind there are growing and flavor differences.
I've never had watercress, but if it has a spicy kick like mustard greens, I can't wait to try it!
I like watercress. i had it for the first time a few weeks ago.
I actually like the thick stems... They are crunchy like celery but tastier

Must try the 'cress. I love greens so not sure how I missed this one.
yes! try it for sure.
I heard watercress is healthier than kale, in fact some charts I've seen put in #1 for vegetables.
It is #1 according to the USDA
@Mike John I buy it at Meijer so u should be able to get it at regular grocery stores
Ooh wow...you live your life off of charts??
It's healthy for sure
But something that's even healthier is stinging nettle
I think watercress taste better tho
@@johnrankin7135 no stinging nettles is actually more nutritional

I've read that watercress is high in oxalates. Should we keep consumption moderate?
I either parboil it or steam it, treat it like asparagus, seasoned with butter
I'm getting some next time I go shopping
Great recipe! I was blessed with 10 bags today. Hoping I can find it at my local Kroger? Albertsons?
You should be able to find it at either of those.

In my childhood in the North of Iran , my mother wood give us watercress with some feta cheese and walnuts as a complete Meal,
I read about this herb. They say we should just consume it raw as heat ruins Vitamin C in it.
Also, the whole plant is edible even if it is not thin.
Also I thank you 😊
