The point you make about the price of fuel consumed by the tractor vs work-getting-done is so important. People constantly argue with me about using machines vs hand-work. There's no comparison. If I had the money, all I'd be touching at the mill was control levers. Keep up the good work! -Andy
Really like your side-side "green machine", so "deluxe". My kubogy TLB mx5200 shuttle gear drive gets 1 1/2 to 1/2 gallons per hour---it all depends. When fuel was 2.50$ per gallon ,l spent more money on GREASE. The fuel is the LOWEST component of TRACTOR use. TO BUY & OWN my rig the cost is 60.oo$ per hour minuse fuel,grease, oil & filters @900 trouble-free hours in 5 1/2 years. Words of wisdom" always use Kubota brand filters", they are the best & the cheapest insurance for LONG LIFE you can get. Thank you for the great Video Sir and happy safe tractoring & farming.

Nice garden. I remember my grandparents burying the large coffee cans in the ground and planting tomato plants in them. Of course, they were metal cans back then and they cut the bottoms out of them. I guess it was to keep the water concentrated/contained around the root system. They had two green thumbs each so anything they planted grew produced like crazy. I have a lot of memories shelling buckets of purple hull peas on the back porch with Memaw.

I think they have abolished Red diesel (for off road use) here in the UK apart from a few special agricultural concessions. Our gasoline is now £2.00 per litre here in places, which converts to $9.46 for a USA Gallon. Had to curtail my use of my 4.0l Jeep WJ a bit! 😢😢 Thumbs up!, stay safe & well! 👍👍

Good to see you taking up time with lil man. Great memories. I have an L3400 Kubota i use ti mow the Lawn and a 6ft finish mower. My yard is one square acre. I fill the tank up around 4 gallons. I can cut my grass 6 times, on one tank fuel.
You have a very light soil. The more humus you can get into your soil the better. You need to work on composting. Might I suggest you take a look at 'The Hollar Homestead' and/or 'Sow the Land' to give you some ideas?
Just a quick gardening tip. When planting tomato plants the top of the soil level in the pot is the level you should be planting them at when you put them in the ground. I have never seen mounding tomatoes, but I don't see why you can't in a wet area. Be sure to pack them in tight to the existing soil and do not bring the soil up the stem.
Planted gardens all my life. I always planted some Silver Queen because it could always be counted on when other corn varieties succumbed to wind, drought or extremely wet conditions.
Not sure if I just missed it but I didn't notice you teasing the bottom of the root ball most potted tomatoes are rootbound and need to be stimulated to let the roots spread otherwise they just kinda stand rootbound
Deep South homestead has a video in which he rings his onions. Removing the dirt from around the bulb after they get to a certain size to let it have space to let the bulb develop. Perhaps that's what you need to do? Thanks for another good video
I'm not sure but I think my B3200 has the same engine as your L. It is a 4 cyl, don't remember the model. I mow 4 acres of yard area and I can do them twice before I have to fill up. I measure my "economy" by how much I get done!!!!! This is my fifth Kubota. 1-14hp, 1-17hp, 1-24hp 1-27hp, and 1-32 hp. Mine is now ten years old with 1500 hrs and it doesn't have the "regen" system. It was the last year before the "regen" systems on any engines above 25hp. good luck
The corn looks good. I have found that my corn does better with regular Nitrogen supplement. I use a Blood Meal that is rated at 46-0-0 to side dress the plants. Once when the plants are about 12" tall and then a generous dose once the silk starts to form. Of course I amend the soil with my own compost when I plant the seed. Chicken litter is really good in the compost pile (a lot of ammonia in it).
the problem with your tomatoes is the depth you're planting them at. I used to plant them the same way, but then my good friend at the greenhouse advised me to plant them deep enough so just the tips og the top leaves are exposed. IT WORKS! With the roots 8-10" deep i don't water them anymore! As a matter of fact, I like to buy my tomato plants allow them to grow too 12"s and then plant them 10-11"s deep. Try it, you'll like it :) I was finishing watching your video and you were plucking the lower limbs off. Just leave all the limbs on the stem, they will become roots.
I was gonna say the same thing. The best crop I ever had, I double dug the garden bed where I planted the tomatoes. I laid out a tarp to the side, dug out the soil 6 inches deep tossing it onto the tarp, then dug out another 6 inches, onto the tarp it want, then to 2 parts soil, I added 1 part each of composted manure, vermiculite, sand, and all the chopped up leaves I had in a pile. Mixed it well and filled the garden bed with the mix, the planted my tomatoes deeply leaving just the top 3 or 4 inches of the plant above ground. I watered profusely when planting before filling in around the plants and then watered the whole of the garden. And, I put Scott's Miracle Grow in the hole with the root ball and then added a circle around the plant on top of the soil. Didn't need to fertilize again the entire summer. Best danged beefsteak tomatoes I ever grew. Couldn't eat them fast enough.
I plant one of those Parks Whopper Improved tomatoes every year. Here in our California weather they get 6+ feet tall and 3 feet across and get loaded with big tomatoes. One of my favorites to get from a home store. I start all the rest of my tomatoes from seed. You may be having problems with your tomatoes dying due to the overhead watering. It may benefit you to run drip to the tomatoes and if possible adjust your impact heads to stop before hitting them.
Diesel is amazing for amount of work you can extract from one gallon!! L4701 is a nice size machine too....I need to compute consumption for my L3901! Wonder if tractors will ever go electric. 🤔
Rather than buying "bags of dirt", buy the bags of either manure and compost or organic compost soil amendment. You can either plant the way you are by placing the amendment in the hole, or mix it with your native soil. The amendments are beneficial to your native soil and won't be wasted.
For the best tomato results in the south...use black cow...in the yellow bag...50% black cow / mixed with 50% soil...you will have an outstanding tomato 🍅 crop...guaranteed. Black cow is fairly reasonably priced. If you can find it ? 😋 👍✌💯

Question, do you have enough equipment using diesel to qualify for agriculture use discount fuels. You will probably need your own tanks and purchase in quantity but by eliminating all of the road taxes you may gain significant savings. For your tomatoes, consider adding Epsom salts to the soil. The magnesium sulfate promotes healthy root growth and if left on the soil around the plant it will deter slugs. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Wes, have you ever found any extra time where you can do a little research with your tomatoes and your potatoes? They're both from the same botanical family ( nightshade ) and you can graft them together. When you're planting potatoes, get a head start on the green foliage by cutting a tomato plant stem and sticking it into the potato starter, then planting it. Maybe seal the graft like any other graft (grafting wax). Another idea; Take some store-bought dirt that is formulated for tomatoes and fill up a car or truck tire with it. Slip in a couple of potato starts on opposite sides, and, Voila ! , You've got a potato bed ! It gets the extra heat of a raised bed, plus even more extra heat of a black cover, so it will dry out faster than you might expect, pay close attention to it's moisture. Maybe a drip watering technique would be good for something like this... Hope you can find a little time for this, I'd like to see how well this can work in your area... Gary

My preference for potato is ."Yukon Gold".... Tomatoes (and any plant in this botanical line) make a chemical called "lectin"... It's worth Googling that...it will make you consume tomatoes in a more restrained manner...
Love your videos. What's your strategy for dealing with racoons? Hope you have one before your corn is close to harvest. I've had some sucess with electric fencing supplemented with trapping, but have finally given up on growing sweet corn because of the coons.
And here's another tip I'm passing on from another TH-camr: take 3/4" pvc pipe and cut it the length of the handle on your 5 gallon pails. Remove the handle metal from one side, slide the pipe on (requires a little tweeking) and over the existing plastic handle (use 1/2" pvc if the original handle is missing or badly broken), put the metal back into the pail and there you have it: a handle that will last way longer than you will...lol, and a tremendously more comfortable in your hand (especially small hands, i.e. ladies).
Just find a gas station that sells it. I have to sign for it and they always glance outside to make sure Im not using it in an on road vehicle. Nothing really special.

Fuel cost is bad the world over, here in the UK London it is hitting £10 per gallon, which is $12.50 ouch 🤕.

I’ve had a kubota 3010 for years and it is real easy on diesel consumption. Great tractor about the same chassis as yours just not as much HP.

That's what I do also. Cut off all the bottom leaves an plant them as deep as I can get them

For tomatoes , my father used 2 yr. old horse manure - he swore by it 😊good luck

If you use horse manure fresher than 2 yrs. It will burn your tomato plAnts

You should dig deep for tomato. Rule of thumb is a basketball sized hole per plant, rather than mounds.

I put an electric fence around the garden last year (the video is "How We're Dealing With Thieves on Our Land"). It worked, surprisingly.
Those Floridades didn’t do very well for me in Florida , not one tomato .
And here's another tip I'm passing on from another TH-camr: take 3/4" pvc pipe and cut it the length of the handle on your 5 gallon pails. Remove the handle metal from one side, slide the pipe on (requires a little tweeking) and over the existing plastic handle (use 1/2" pvc if the original handle is missing or badly broken), put the metal back into the pail and there you have it: a handle that will last way longer than you will...lol, and a tremendously more comfortable in your hand (especially small hands, i.e. ladies).

Just find a gas station that sells it. I have to sign for it and they always glance outside to make sure Im not using it in an on road vehicle. Nothing really special.

This fence has solved the problem. I can even take her collar off and she won't go past the perimeter (unless there's a rabbit involved.)

one reason for the disappointing growth results of the tomatoes may be that you water them from the top instead of at the roots. really appreciate your videos!

You probably can plant most them much closer together to increase productivity. Lot's of dead space for weeds to grow.
