This scene was lost on me as a kid but re-watching Signs the other day, it's easily now my favourite. The camera shots on the torches, the music, and then that monologue, just blew me away.
There was a time when M Night was making gems. This is one. The music in this scene is fabulous. James Newton Howard is up there with the best of them.
Unbelievable. You don't get scenes of this power in Hollywood anymore. Hollywood needs an artistically free Night back. However, i want Night to ditch Hollywood and go independent, so that we can get his art completely unfiltered.
I don't give a shit about what anybody says, Mel Gibson is an AMAZING fucking actor. This scene like so many others of his brought fucking tears to my eyes.
Great performance in this movie. Very moving and intense, especially this scene. Just a note: if you're ever helping someone with an asthma attack, it's usually easier to breathe if they're leaning forward instead of lying back.
I cried wen I watched this. Both my parents died from asthma and I am now in care. My asthma is really bad sometimes and I hav been 2 hospital 20 times it is not fair. The doctors say I hav a 90%chance of dying by the time I am 15. I am 13.
That's actually Macaulay Culkin's (Home Alone) brother, Rory Culkin. They all come from a family of theatre actors so it's no surprise how talented he is even at this age.
Rory Culkin played Euronymous in Lords Of Chaos (the movie about the infamous Norwegian black metal band Mayhem), and he was also in Scream 4. I've honestly only ever seen him in darker "horror" films, but he's a great actor regardless, and he also happens to be the little brother of Macaulay (Kevin from Home Alone) and Kieran (Kevin's cousin on Home Alone)
Magnificent, stunning attention to detail in this scene, as in so many in the film. God acts through Graham, who uses spiritual words even as he expresses his outward hatred for God. Merrill prays but can't do anything else. The sister has already dreamed of this outcome. So much meaning - injected by the Holy Spirit into M. Night Shyamalan's amazing film-making. The film "Signs" offers signs to all of us out in the audience, and that is why there has rarely if ever been a movie like it.
Anyone else love the morning after this. *checks baby monitor* 0.7 seconds of silence "That's good enough for me" "Me too" *proceeds to go open the door*
+Dillon ferko (Shamrock69) , the aliens in this movie are from a certain point of view demons, who threaten his family. It's about his religious battle how he loses God and through this experience he finds him again. But also HAHAHAH yes they should've waited a bit longer before going up.
But Merrill piles up the "special meal" made by the company Joy. Do you not see? He has his spiritual food, and even as his brother is struggling, cursing God and trying to save his son through humanist means, the brother is praying to God, while the girl Bo is still in her angel costume and is proven able to convert water in such a way that her pure goodness sanctifies it to burn the demon-aliens. And as the music changes imperceptibly we realise God is not far away at all... which He really isn't! Then Merrill (seemingly) refers to saving the Flashlight, but he is actually referencing the saving of the enlightenment they have received!
this is SO sad ): poor little boy... poor everyone with asthma! ): i dont have it but i feel REALLY bad for all of you who do x( it makes me really appreciate my health
You understand that there may be "signs" in this scene that even the genius makers may not realise? [the dog food for a start - cute name, wouldn't you say?] [The tear in Joaquin's eye at 01:30] Of course a movie about signs (made to restore some faith and hope after 9/11) would receive the active involvement of the Holy Spirit. i have asthma but my parents don't believe it and i don't have an inhaler so I have to pray during mine in order for me to know that I will live. Anyone going through what I am.
Painful, back muscles are tight & locked up from the effort to get air. Airways are painfully constricted & you have to concentrate on getting little gasps in. Leaning forward or lying on your side is better positioning for opening airways. NOT having a grown mans big hand on your chest while you struggle is preferable!!
Riveting scene that moves anyone to tears if you analyze it closely. Another great scene from this film is when Joaquin's character calmly lashes out on Mel's character for this--not because he was being a responsible dad, but because he showed his weakness when he let his faith falter for a moment or so.
so no one is noticing the bruising on Mels neck and the alien grabbing the son in the same spot of his, then Mel says towards end of scene "We're the same".....hmmmm
What he meant by "we're the same" was that he and his son are one is the same as they took deep breaths to not worry his son about feeling negatively about him

How could the Holy Spirit NOT get behind something like that, which is anyway a movie about lapsed faith, the return to faith, and the way in which the enigmatic Holy Spirit even achieves His purposes for Father and Son through things that seem trivial or awful or ridiculous? With Him things just add up, within the movie but also beyond it.
