    From this I'm getting two things: Barbara Weiss is an extremely competent architect - that building has been so sympathetically brought up to date, with some really innovative ideas - and she's also *made* of money.

      So many things I like about this space but I don't see it as especially unique. I've seen older homes that had living spaces on upper floors while having bedrooms on the lower. And I don't see how having a sleep area closer to the street's noise is an improvement in this case??

    I actually loved modern minimalism design. But after seeing this, this is the first not-really minimalist house that i wish i lived there. So comfy, and looook at that amount of natural lights, those plants... what a gorgeous home!

    • @giuseppenativo2123
      @giuseppenativo2123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Nick FL The previous comment, in my opinion wasn't, for real, so wrong.
      I will explain my thought.
      During the last two decades, more or less, all the most trendy, sometimes important, national and international magazines that published articles about homes, apartments, 'sold', in a very wrong way, the concept that the 'minimal' style was just about white walls everywhere, kitchens without furniture or just with metal furniture, bathrooms that don't look like bathrooms and the idea that the green wasn't so useful in the end.
      It's horrific. When common journalists write about architecture, often is better to skip the article and just watch the pictures.
      This very beautiful building and the inside space (specially after the restoration) have, an imprint of minimalism but the very elegant design of the interiors, the choice of the materials and colors makes the space very warm. 'Warm', is not a word you commonly combine with the second most famous 'ism', of the XXth century, in architecture.
      So yes, I agree with your explanation, for the most. I like it.
      I don't think that the choice of the designer, here, was to create a minimal design but instead, a very warm and comfortable home for a family, surrounded by their favorite objects, collected during a lifetime.
      She designed a green roof just to have some 'green' under her eyes.
      It's lovely and very British.
      This is just my opinion.
      Have a good day

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Very interesting. Purely remarking from an outside perspective, minimalism always has seemed to be about that hyper-reduction of objects. I guess the definition of Minimalism is up for some degree of debate.

      @@crazy808ish i feel like there is some tension between the hyper-reductive kind of minimalism, and the kind that marie kondo (and the like) preach, which is more a focus on intentional ownership and curation. if that makes sense? i really like the latter kind of 'minimalism'.

      Please can we stop calling everything that is tasteful scandinavian.

    • @ThisIsMyFullName
      @ThisIsMyFullName 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Scandinavian style is the American version of Scandinavia. While most homes in Scandinavia are dominated by white walls and clean lines, they're rarely as minimal as the "Scandinavian style" makes it out to be. This is because Scandinavia has a lot of architecture and design which also comes through in most homes, such as design furniture that are often colored or in warm woods, various designer lamps that provides different light sources and helps set a mood, and several plants or flowers that gives life to the space. Plus homes in Scandinavian cities are often over 100 years old and therefor holds a certain charm to them, even when they're renovated. All of this holds true in this London apartment, as well. However, this is opposite to the "Scandinavian Style" that also has clean white lines, but often fail to fill in this blank canvas with any design, color, light, or charm. You can easily see the difference if you search for 'scandinavian style', which will show you a lot of white cold looking homes, and then search for 'scandinavian hotel design', which is a much truer representation of a home in Scandinavia, adding a lot more warmth and color.

    You can see the "Houses of Parliament" that makes the house feel urban part of town? That's just rich people saying I have enough money to buy a house near important buildings....

      I'm scratching my head wondering why she would want to live in a 5 story house with all of those stairs at her age. She had the house gutted to turn a pub into a home. I hope an elevator was installed and they just forgot to show it.

      Candis Agree completely.I noticed one set of stairs only had one handrail. But, then, I can’t talk as one of the things that attracted me to my house was the absence of stairs, - not even a step at the entry.

    I like the idea of keeping the structure of an old building and updating the inside only; less damaging to the environment. There are some ideas which are doable for ordinary people like me: build a vertical book shelves up to the ceiling and use a ladder to reach the top, make a small garden under skylight or a bay window, and put your lovely pics on the wall the way you like.
