Honesty, looking back on the Primers going back to the beginning, I think only the Berthier really requires a revisit at this point. The show hit its stride so quickly that even the early .32 ACP episodes really hit the mark on showing how they were special and different weapons. Definitely a credit to the show that its early work needs so little revision after all this time.
I'd love to see them hit the Savage 1907 in more detail (especially since it was Mae's favorite .32). That would probably have a more contextual focus, though. I think they covered the military part pretty well.
@@jabaier2 Fingers crossed, Othais will be able to carry through on his plan to revisit many of these weapons in new series beyond Primer. I would love to see more on how the Savage came about and went on to be the icon we both clearly admire. However, as much as I love the Savage, the Primer on it really did fit the gun's role as a unique but not exceptional .32 ACP pocketpistol thrown into the war out of desperation.
That is why I really think only the Berthier requires the WW1-centric Primer being redone because its enormous significance in the Great War for France and many others.
Honestly, don’t you think that an iconic, rifle design changing to this day needs more than 20 minutes? The Berthier? Forgotten except to Ian and Francophiles.
@@samiam619 He wasn't saying that the Gewehr 98 didn't need a redo (it did), he was saying that the only episode left in need of a remake is the Berthier. The Berthier was the main (if not most common) infantry rifle of one of the largest participants in the war. It's far from forgotten.
With weapons as influential and integral as the lebel and gewher 98 being redone, i can only imagine a full 3 hour episode on the beholla is up next right?

I still think it's a strange coincidence(?) that the lange vizier was apparently named after some guy and not because it's a long sight.
Lange is also a kinda Common surname in germany
Honestly, after having binge watched and rewatched all of the primer videos made thus far, I feel like I just took 3 or 4 entire 2000 or 3000 level university classes on late 19th and early 20th century Firearms development, and I love it!
Langevizier means long sight. My Berliner father-in-law (fought in ww2) said he would rather have walked back from the Ural mountains in Russia with a GEW. 98 than a K98k. When I asked why he said that they would shoot farther. I called bs, but at that point in the nineties he was kinda crazy. He still had a piece of grenade and a 762x25 bullet in his head.and apparently according to my mother-in-law a couple on his ass. Oh, and he did make that little hike from the Urals only to be caught by the Soviets in Berlin, his home town.
That's interesting, I did not type 762x25! That is auto correct which I despise. I wrote 762x54 the common round for the mosey nugget, the preferred? Small arm of the Soviet amy.
Why would he have to "Walk back from the Urals", when the Wehrmacht didnt get close enuff to the Urals to bomb the war factories there? I call BS on this story...
"The Man in the Black Fur Coat" tells a very similar story. Pretending to be a Pole in a Russian POW camp. He skirted a lot of patrols, told a bunch of fibs, and wound up back home, but his hometown was crawling with Soviets and informants, so he lived a good ways out of town in a barn. He would sleep in the day and conduct various forays at night to find as much food as he could. As many, his life immediately after the war was as treacherous as during.

Interesting how Mae's opinion on "would you take it into battle?" changed between the original episode and this one. From a soft yes and "I'd take it only if I had to" to a pretty hard and fairly enthusiastic yes.
I would say it's because I've become a more experienced shooter and am taking the time to truly analyze what the gun was for its time. I would really like to someday sit down with O and record an opinion redo on some of those earlier pieces.
I really hope you end up re-doing the Mauser 1914 episode again. About three years back I found one at my local pawnshop, and in my research - was introduced to your video series. I bought the gun thanks to your glowing review and have been in love ever since; with the gun and your show. I do believe twenty two minutes is not enough for such a deep history as mauser has and would love to see your new style of in-depth videos done for that sweet little pistol.
Thanks team for the awesome presentation of the GEW98. I'm in the end of the beginning of Investigation of the real potential of the GEW98 on the range in competition with the QMRC. My rifle is a good condition 1916 S&S that was recovered from the Australian outback and brought back to use with very little effort.

Just a little bit on personal knowledge as to Mauser stripper clip design. Once you press the ammo into the rifle from the stripper, you don't need to "Pull" the empty stripper out. Just close the action. It will fall off on doing so. BTW... Proud owner of many 8mm rifle designs. Love the vids!

You don't seem to mention that it is a three position safety? left - off, up - safe, right - safe and bolt locked When in use they could carry it in the up position and only have to slap it to the left to fire (also would block sights to remind to disengage), safe and bolt locked it more for when not in use (non combat activities such as travel).
Exactly what I caught. I hunt with a Yugo 8mm, and it reminds me when I pick my rifle up to shoot deer, as it completely obscures the sights.
I actually own a Yugoslavian version of the G98, the M24/47. I honestly love the rifle to death and it has since replaced my Winchester 94 as my medium and large game rifle. One thing I cannot abide though is the straight bolt. I threw a M48 Yugo bolt body into it and have been far happier with it since.

I was skeptical when saw this episode being reposted I was what the heck othias you already did this rifle but I watched it anyway and I am so happy that I did othias and mae are awesome and amazing historians and I love these episodes cant wait to see the next one keep it up guys also being the son of a gunsmith i love the anvil episodes aswell
I'm a truly hardcore mauser phile. Although my 98k is mint and like new and crispy not even broke in and the safety is very stiff and clicky, I have at gun shows seen really well used 98 actions where the safety won't move like he mentioned. But that's only with really whooped examples. Did you know that if you hold the trigger down when you go to close the bolt the firing pin gently uncocks so you don't have to dry fire it to relax the spring.
brandon bentley Yes, we knew that trick about holding the trigger... You can do it with a lot of rifles.

I think your videos are pertinent to my supply chain management masters course work. I geek out on the guns, but learn a lot about production, distribution, market effects, etc. This is a great opus. Good work. Also, I'm an Army logistics officer so this content is golden.

I remember that Gewehr 98 has three stage safety positions the same as the later famous k98 --> Left position is fire, MIDDLE POSITION disconnect the trigger while bolt is still movable, and Right position not only disconnected the trigger but also lock the bolt. Not sure if I am wrong or they simply missed to mention the middle position in the film.

I like the Gewehr 1898 bolt action rifle. The Gewehr 1898 is the gun that somewhat help the US develop the M1903 Springfield. If the information is accurate.
Yes, the springfield is based on the mauser 98 model but it never reached its standards
The Mauser 1893 model was the one that the Springfield was copied after.
The rifles from 1899, damn. I like to imagine that behind every scratch on it is a story. How it got carried around in No-mans-land in Flandern or Verdun, survived artillery shelling and trench fights. How many owner did it have and how long did they last...
Keep up with these great remakes of the early episodes, and looking forward to the trench mag modificacion!

hopefully we'll get a 1 hour remake of the C96 video because there is a little bit more info about the weapon that wasn't talked about in the original video, such as when Churchill was using the weapon or how British police officers used it before World war 1.

Mae, I got a small pointer for you at 33:57 ... you picked the stripper clip out with your fingers and threw it on the floor. Next time, just close the bolt on the stripper clip and the bolt will do that for you.

I have a turkish mauser98 built in the forties, and the biggest improvement they made, IMO, was getting rid of the roller-coaster sight in favor of the 98k sight, which means you can shoot at closer range much easier.

Take down of the firing pin is best accomplished using the front hole in the trigger guard to depress the spring to remove the cocking piece. Later Mausers had a hole button in the stock for this purpose. This keeps you from bend or breaking the tip off the firing pin.

my First comment ever on one of your vids, love them so far. About the busy sight picture that is mentioned by Mae, I noticed that she closes her non aiming eye while shooting to take aim. In talking to my grand father (ww2 but besides the point) he told me once at a Shooting range, that the usual drill for military shooting was to keep both eyes open. Heard that even more while being in a shooting club for a little time. Maybe that would be something to look into, since I see a lot of americans on youtube closing their non aiming eye when shooting.

This is the only TH-cam series where I genuinely become excited about new episodes and I do recognize and appreciate your research but I think Lange is a conjugation of Lang which would make "Lange Vizier" translate to "Long Range" please let me know it you found otherwise though

I would absolutely love to own that old rifle to add to my Czech collection. A VZ 24 is in the future for me, luckily I've gotten many of the more expensive/modern pieces already.
Mauser was the best designer for rifles at the time. Would he live in the present day and build weapons, the military would have the best rifle. The man was brilliant!

Will we see a redo of the 1892 Ordnance episode? It seemed to miss the in depth background that other episodes have.
One good thing with the saftey is that you can see if its safe with just a glance. There is no question what so ever if the saftey is flicked or not. When hunting, that is a good thing. It is clunky and not as easy to use as on some other guns, though. Sneaking the saftey off when an animal come close is kind of a let down.

Secondly, I honestly could have used this video a year ago when I bought my Yugo Mauser from an uncle who purchased it in a milsurp store, never cleaned the cosmoline out of it, and is a very bad chain smoker. 2 weeks after I buy it, I take it to the range and it won't fire. Light dimples on primers. I had no clue how to disassemble the bolt and I have no shame in admitting I spent 2 hours fighting to disassemble it whit the safety completely off and eventually figured it out through experimentation.
I learned about the cosmoline thing with an M48A myself.
@@SonOfTheDawn515 I've found what Othais talks about in this video with the bolt and grease is kind of a 2 way street. You would never really think of the inside of a bolt can really get that caked in cosmoline. My fathers Mosin was fairly clean after using a hair dryer to melt it and wipe it away. Of course, I was raised on Mosins so I knew all about their disassembly and maintenance. While the Mauser bolt is especially great at retaining lubrication it is also a giant particle magnet for cosmoline, dust, and cigarette ash. I spent 4 hours just cleaning the bolt carrier, bolt, and cocking piece. 5 more for the rest of the internals in the reciever.
@@Courier-Six Little tip with the bolt... After shooting, especially corrosive stuff, strip it down and soak it in extremely hot water with a little Dawn soap. Once water cools enough for you to tolerate, scrub it down with a brush, wipe it dry and clean as normal. Worked for me for years. Dawn is a degreaser, hot water helps break shit down as well and hot water dries away quicker.
@@SonOfTheDawn515 I know. I've spent most of my life around milsurp rifles and as evidenced by the photo actual military weapons. A few videos back I commented on my fathers first Mosin rifle that exclusively shot cheap surplus ammo and corrodes the hell out of the barrel. Similar to what Othias says in this video about Paul Mauser, I'm not one to rely on another's design for safety. I shoot premium non-corrosive ammunition and do my own personal handloads with good quality components from companies like Hornady or Nosler. Ammunition is one of the things I won't skimp on as it's what actually makes a firearm dangerous to handle for the shooter as much it does the target. Still do regular maintenance but since I cleaned the rifle out with some CLP, I've kept on top of it every weekend, even if I dont shoot it.

You know, I went back recently to the Mosin 1891 episode after getting a rather interesting example that went from Russian to German to Finnish hands and, of course had thing in my hands, when I thought back to this episode and tried something. It turns out, the Russian 91 with the large, exposed Konavalov sight and all of it's other oddities can match that Langevizier in one important aspect, the ability to juggle the sight detent buttons and 'walk' the range out, without having to look. You do have to lift the sight leaf to do it, but it can walk the range out using just the detent clicks, just like the Langevizier.
I stil hunt with a rifle that is a blue print copy of the 98 - made by Carl Gustaf here in Sweden. It was made in the 50's, chambered in 30-06. For hunting, its a beautifull smooth operating gun. The mechanism is like silk, and has fairly good precission in the normal distances for hunting. Just a fantastic rifle that has never failed me once in the 29 years I have owned it. I have newer guns, more fancy guns. But the CG is the thing that follow me when I am going out if I hunt anything larger then birds and hares.

I have to ask about the internal box mag that had the rounds stopped by a flat pice of metal on a chain that looks extremely similar to something you can buy at numrick gun parts for a 1903 Springfield what numrick describes it as is a 10 round magazine that all you have to do is remove the bottom metal and clip it in
