Before I began performing the music of Queen in 2012 - incredibly - I had never heard this song. After a few shows with the Queen Extravaganza, though, and absorbing the song’s cadence, it quickly became one of my favorites to perform - not only because of its breathtaking classical intricacy, but also for the way it arrests the audience’s attention every. single. time. in a way that no other Queen song seems to do. The song recently took on new meaning for me when someone (and I regrettably forget who) told me that Fred wrote it from the perspective of Mary Austin, as an empathetic love letter, fully aware of the toll their relationship had on her. I don’t know if that’s true, but it makes the lyric so much heavier for me.
When I picture the quintessential “young Freddie,” this is the voice I hear in my head. The fragility and vulnerability he displayed in the original recording of “Love Of My Life” is astounding. He was truly fearless in displaying his feminine side, which is maybe the most important thing I learned from him as a singer. As a musical product of early 90s grunge, I came up with the impression that masculinity must always sound deep and guttural, something my vocal cords never allowed me to do very convincingly. I cringe a bit when I listen to my early recordings! I was always a little shy about the fact that I could sing very softly and breathy - almost like a girl. I guess you could say Freddie gave me permission to let that side of my voice out into the open, and to embrace it.
I always dedicate this one to his memory because it feels like the appropriate thing to do. It always seems like the perfect moment in a set list of bombastic anthems to pause, and truly take into account the singular talent that was Freddie Mercury.

fun fact for those of you who dont know : they actually mixed a lot of marc’s vocals into the Bohemian Rhapsody film when rami had to do the live performances. queen doesnt overlook marc. in fact there was an interview that brian and roger did praising him about how thankful they were that he was able to do the film and contribute his vocals and how they “just can’t not use marc martel”. i feel the only reason why he isnt used in queen as the lead vocalist is because he sounds almost exactly like freddie, which isnt a bad thing at all. but i think it’d be too much of a shock to the bandmates while performing and even the crowd. trust me, if i went to a queen concert and marc was singing id lose my marbles.
I respect your opinion but there's more than that. First off, Brian May loves Adam like his own child. Lambert was already chosen before Marc joined Queen Extravaganza(tribute band of Queen formed by Roger Taylor). Also at the beginning of Queen Extravaganza, Brian and Roger didn't even knew thar Marc can handle the entire show alone. There were 3 to 4 singers at the beginning. And when they realized that, I guess it was already 2016. They probably weren't aware that Martel has won 2 Canadian Grammy awards and 5 Junos awards. And now today, Queen has been touring with Lambert for like 8 years now and they dont want to tour with anyone else. But common, Marc deserves to sing with Queen at least once. He has worked his ass off carrying the legacy of Queen music and spreading it to the young ones out there. As you said, he even provide some vocals for the movie.

Ironic - Official just seeing this now but you do have a good point. i know there was more to them not using marc instead of adam. he is an amazing vocalist and ive been following adam since his idol days, but vocally i think marc would be a better fit. but adam has been doing it for years so i do understand the conflict of interest.

First of all, you are right. Marc Sang once with Brian and Rog and they were left in shock.
But the special thing Adam has is:
His own style. If they got Marc into a tour, it would be sort of "replacing" Freddie with a "copy". Marc has worked a lot to keep Queen Alive and that is awesome. He bought tears to my eyes in every Queen video.
I've seen Freddie 9 times with Queen and been a fan since the 70s. I never thought I would hear another human being with the same powerful clear and concise vocal talent of the Late great Freddie Mercury. Thank you for making my day.

I think this performance was his best in terms of sounding EXACTLY like Freddie Mercury. But I can still hear Marc's own voice too. It's like I hear them both at the same time. In other words, Marc is AMAZING!!!

I dunno how to call it. Freddie's voice is higher pitch/thinner/sharper while Marc's voice is lower pitch /more to baritone type /blunt, more bass.
@@pixiesolowing I'd say the reverse, in that Marc doesn't have a strong bass sound to his vocal, so it's difficult for him to match Freddie's "live" tone or the "power" he had in the early 80s. I think of Marc's tone as "brighter" (and he nails that softer sound that Freddie used a lot in recordings) compared to Freddie's "sharper" tone, if that makes any sense.

After Freddie's death I couldn't believe that one day someone will come and sing almost identical as him. This is by far the best interpretation and it will stay like that.

I just saw him at the Miller here in Augusta Georgia with Black Jacket Symphony. He was unbelievable.
If you see Brian May's performance of this song you will understand why they can't tour with Marc. Too much feelings man, to hear someone you carried his memories for years beside you but then you look and it's not him.

Who is their right mind puts dislike to this amazing vocal and piano performance? I've been producing for the past 25 years and have seen tons of artists coming through my studio (amateur and professionals). Marc is the top tier singer and a very good piano player. Marc, if you ever in New York or New Jersey I will provide a free studio time for you to record and if you'd like will give you one of the songs I've written for free. I grew up listening to Queen and was influenced by infectious melodies and not ordinary harmonies they produced. So my songs fall in the same category musically. It would be a delight to work with such a talent as yourself! Keep up a good work!
Marc has a date in Patchogue and other New England dates scheduled. He does most of his recording in his home studio, or on the west coast with producer John Fields. Mastering is done by original band mate Jason Germaine or 4 time Grammy winner, J.R. McNeely. But who knows, he might enjoy a little jamming.

Back in 70's actually. I think this song is on an album A Night at the Opera (1975), which is an album with most of hits ever recorded by Queen. "Love of My Life" is one of them.
He has a beautiful voice and yes, reminiscent of Freddie.... yet Freddie had a heartfelt, powerful voice that cannot be duplicated. I did enjoy it though.

Queen's, News of the World (1977) was one of the FIRST vinyl albums I bought when I was 13 years old!!! Still have it to this day! Why am I just NOW, today learning of Marc Martel!?!?! Makes me miss Freddie's vocal so super MUCH... Bravo Mr. Martel... BRAVO 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This morning i played this video to my cousin who in the past promoted Queen at various locations in the UK, without showing him who was singing i asked him who it was, he answered straight away, thats Freddie Mercury, he could not believe that it was not until i turned the screen to face him, the look on his face was priceless, you Marc have made 2020 a bit less gloomy, yours gratefully, a new fan.
Amazing! Every time I heard the king of kings on family life radio I would tell my husband the lead singer sounds like Freddie mercury! And lo and behold I heard him sing bohemian rhapsody (my all time fav) on accident on Musi. I am in love. @@stevenarguelles6624 Queen Extravaganza is what you meant, and that's not Queen. That's a tribute band formed by Roger Taylor. None of the original Queen members perform with that group. Queen has said they will never perform with anyone that sounds like Freddie Mercury, as they would not be able to subject themselves to hours of emotional pain. However, Queen Extravaganza is no longer touring. They stopped in 2016. Marc now performs with another tribute band called The Ultimate Queen Celebration. They are currently touring the US. theultimatequeencelebration.com/shows Marc also contributed a few vocal recordings to the Queen Biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody", but to what extent is unknown.

Dumb comment. Freddie said in his interview that he couldn't even remember the lyrics here and there, he sang the song based on his mood. The lyrics have changed over the years. How it's supposed to sing was never his preference. He performed different versions several times. There was nothing like how it's supposed to be. Adam never offered to sing this song. Brian May has. So sick of ppl who couldn't research more about the band they like.

You know, Marc kept creeping into my recommendations a lot lately, been hearing so much about him.
Now more than ever... I'm dumbfounded why he wasn't chosen. He's spectacular!
The band didn't want to be "replacing" Freddie (essentially). Yes, Marc sounds so uncannily similar, but it was too similar for the band. Like I said, they didn't want to "replace" Freddie with someone who sounds like him.
I get goosebumps and tears falling from my eyes. It's not just his voice, but he has Freddie's pronunciation of words and how he sang it perfectly. I love our Freddie forever.

Funny to read that everyone mentions only his voice. As an aspiring piano player who also likes to sing to a few songs, the impressive part of the performance to me is the perfect combination of excellent piano playing and singing at the same time… absolutely world class!
I agree about the piano. : ) If you haven't already check out his one-take of Bohemian Rhapsody with piano and be prepared to have your mind blown ; ) He even plays the guitar parts on the piano.
