@8:01 Thank you! I was having the same thought! Finally found it in the manual, for reference: Sine: no source (default) Triangle: MIDI velocity Sawtooth: MIDI mod wheel CC #1) Square: MIDI aftertouch
How refreshing, a true review and not a advert in disguise. Very useful. A couple of the issues you mention are design errors that should have been fixed before release, hopefully there will be a updated version soon. Kind of doubt it though, listening to user feedback or feature requests is not Behringer's strong suit.
This is an excellent review. I guess the only complaint I can imagine is that people who like to complain would have nothing to complain about 😂 Subscribed, thanks!
Interesting, thank you! I've been waiting for a good review on this thing. Very tempted to put a little bit of gel in my hair, give it some spikes and get me a Proton.
@@slumpfishtx so is mine…..had no idea that i would almost pass out in the summer heat until i realised i had to get the hair tied back and off my neck to cool down 😬🤣
Great video, I'm sure you know now that the filters can be simply patched in series, it produces some nice results. That note triggering issue in the paraphonic mode doesn't exist on later units.
Exxelent Review...Many Thanks for making it!! Great sound examples and you are very clear when you describe what you are doing, like that a lot. Also i like your comparison whit the Neutron (which i have and love ) but im getting a Proton as well , i think they can team up in a good way, and the price is right. Cheers ⭐
Great video. I’ll probably break down and buy this eventually. I have two neutrons and got them each for 200, so hopefully they bring down the price to 300, I’d jump then. Gel my hair I mean. Gonna have to use the s&h from my neutron with this I guess. Don’t love the knob report. I need quality knobs. That is upsetting.
That S&H is so useful! FWIW the knob thing is not THAT bad but it is noticeable compared with Neutron's buttons which are rock solid. Thanks for Watching!
First thing I noticed is the lack of CV for the filter mix. It’s like they didn’t play with the prototype at all, because it’s the first thing you want to modulate. Good video man. Btw, I love the sound of Neutron’s overdrive.
The one thing that bugs me about the osc-shape blending knob on the Neutron, is that there's a little "dip" in between the square and saw waves, where the osc's volume goes really low. I guess maybe there's some phase-cancelling going on between the two waves when they mix, and I have to be careful to avoid that part of the knob range when playing live. Unfortunately it looks like the same quirk exists in the proton :(
Thanks a lot for the review and lots of learning you offered to the audience. I'm trying to find a Behringer synth that the VCO and filter sound really good (warm and rich and very musical resonance tone) but also being possible to get a lot of more musical sounding and pleasing outcome. Something with warmth of Moog tone but with lots of manipulation options. Is there such combo? Some people say Behringer 2600 has that. Is there any other Behringer synth that has THAT tone and plenty of manipulation options as well? What do you think about K2 mkii compared to Proton? Have you tried one? And also I like to know what you think about the two units that Behringer has and they offer presets (Pro-800 and DeepMind 12D). Do they have the same level of manipulations as Proton? Probably Pro-800 is more rudimentary, right? How about VCO and VCF tone quality? Especially for DeepMind 12D which has DCO instead. Do you think the tonal quality is in the same ballpark as Proton? I'm wondering if it is a good payoff to lose the presets but gain better tone perhaps, and of course they have polyphonic options of 8 for Pro-800 and 12 for Deepmind 12D which make them more distinguished, and again I don't know as a result would one lose certain tonal characteristics to gain the polyphony. I appreciate sharing your thoughts. Thanks again for putting time and effort to make this video.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you so much for watching! I wish I could answer your questions more accurately but I don’t have experience playing the K2, Pro-800 or Deepmind, but I’ve heard good things about them, particularly the deepmind and I’ve always thought it would be cool to have the pro800. As far as flexibility, not a lot comes as close to what proton or the neutron can do, but since you’re looking for a warm moog type sound, perhaps look into the Mother 32? I’ve not used one but my friend does and he loves it and the demos sound beautiful! It has a comparable patch bay to the proton and neutron for lots of interesting modulation options.
You told that the build-quality of the Behringer-things is somehow bad. I can not confirm that. I have a Model-D and a Deepmind12, and there is nothing for me to critizise. There seem to be muich Behrinher-haters on the net, posting their bad experiences with behringer, wobbly pots, everything sounds bad. I can not hear any bad thing on my Model-D. The only thing was a PSU that was defective, a new one was delivered really fast.
Totally agree 👍 I think it's brand snobbery... same as people having a audi and say a kia The amount of equipment behringer have brought to the table is honestly amazing 👏
The Behringer product presentation says that the filters can in fact be put in series. However, looking at the manual, there doesn't seem to be any way to do that. Not sure what's going on with that.
This is probably a silly question, but don't both filters have inputs and outputs (as well as CV ins and outs)? What happens when you patch VCF1 out into VCF2 in? If it were that simple I guess there would be no puzzle.
@@mattsmith1440 You're totally right, patching it that way puts them in serial. I was so busy hunting for a fancy button combo to trigger serial filtering I forgot to try the simple solution.
I was looking for something to compliment my Crave and Edge and was looking at the Neutron before I knew the Proton existed. Considering they will be used together, is it still a coin flip between Proton and Neutron?
The neutron would be cheaper to buy on the used market right now and is still a great synth but proton has more modulation capability and patch points. If you don’t mind spending the extra money on a proton the extra lfo and improved design is pretty nice. The neutron still has a whole lot of patching capability as wel though (plus some things proton doesn’t have like sample and hold) so it really comes down to whether you think the extra cost is worth it. The proton is 400usd and the neutron is around 300 or less on the used Market.

It definitely adds some cool texture/tones but it doesnt really warp the sound into crazy shapes.
Too bad you immediately open with apologies for not being a fan of Behringer. If I may tell you, the DSI Evolver came onto the market and a few months later the encoder potentiometers no longer worked properly. don't forget that the device cost four times as much. Next was the purchase of an Alesis Andromeda A6 for even more money and guess what the display broke after a few months. I can name a whole series that were not good at all and the prices were very high and, of course, made in the United States of America. So pride and snobbery cost money, but you don't hear anyone from the big show people talking about that.
Korg build quality? I doubt their wavestate and other plastic stuff would be functional in next 10 years, volcas are already dying (buttons on sample).
That doesn't mean Behringer is as good, which was the point made - their build quality not being up to the standard of competitors in his opinion. I can't personally speak to that, although I have had Behringer gear die on me with light usage.
There is no J in Behringer! (For example - do you pronounce the word ringer as rinjer? - NO!) So, imagine you are ringing bears instead of ringing bells and it IS bear-ringer.

Put vcf1 out to vcf2 in, (or 2 in 1) voila, serial filter with parallel control via the filter mix control.
