    Just read the manual. Variable shape linear to exponential on the VCAs would have been great, but that is pretty nitpicky. Fantastic architecture with some nice shortcuts in the routing and patch bay. If one does not own a Neutron already I see no reason any longer to get one; this is a huge step up from it. Sum, attenuverters and LFO phase along with inversion to second filter all offer much to explore in addition to everything else.

    • @nanocyde_artist
      @nanocyde_artist 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The Behringer Proton seems great but it is missing a few things from the Neutron. Most people probably won't miss the BBD delay or the distortion, but the Neutron also has S&H and noise output (the Proton has a noise knob in the filter section but no patchbay output), and the single filter has two outputs, with a little trick you can turn it into a notch filter. Not sure if that's possible at all on the Proton. Neutron also has a dedicated slew circuit but I suspect the ASR generators on the Proton can pull that off. One of the Neutron's attenuators has CV control, which functionally makes it a second VCA. Attenuverters are definitely nice though.

    • @klstay
      @klstay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@nanocyde_artist notch filter is simply high pass + low pass set properly in series. Any signal fed to a VCA with normal control coming from ASR will “slew” based on attack setting. (Manual does not state so I assume VCAs are unity gain) Sample & Hold will be missed though and I think that highlights in a way with whom this would be a good long term match.

    Great show (again!) I gotta admit this thing sounds pretty beefy in the low ends and overall has "some uniqueness" to even familiar sounds on any synth.... it's hard to put into words because it's something "heard or precieved" differently by each of us...

    I just have the Neutron. I really like it simplicity but is still very creative and musical. Before I had a Uno Synth pro X but got lost in his complexity like his dual filter and double knob functions. The neutron is also great in a small synth setup because of the own delay FX. Very great synthesizers this Proton too!

    I couldn't agree with you more on getting these behringer origional units. As soon as I saw that the proton and model15 were in development, I already knew that I would acquire them for the neutron. Just by seeing what all three offer, I know that they will compliment each other. I will marry my vintage tonus 26 together with my behringer grey meanie. Then I will frankenstein everything to the eurorack set-up. All effects hardware is outboard except the spring reverbs in the 2600's.

    400 bucks it's quite expensive for a paraphonic with no preset bank. But, if want go modular, a separate modules setup would cost three/four times more to do the same thing(or not)

      I was surprised at the $399 price same price as pro800

  • @klstay
    @klstay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    So, who is this NOT for? If you own a Neutron already it may be easier for you to determine. When was the last time you got lost in it for hours? (When was the last time it was even turned on or plugged in at all?) Do you own and more than very rarely use any cables with the patch bay? If so is it mostly sample ideas you have seen or do you spend hours trying things out? Be honest with yourself to what degree the patching is a “hot button” for you and will be heavily used. If none/not much there may be better options for around 4 Benjamins.

  • @klstay
    @klstay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Who else could this MAYBE not be for? If you are serious about getting into modular, learning and eventually mastering the principles, this is not a bad starting point though there are better ways to jump in IMHO. Behringer's own Roland 100 clone modules cover everything on this and Neutron for about $100 more. Of course you also need a case/PSU and that will put you back another couple of Benjamins. For me that means Proton is ideal for someone who intends to really explore the patch bay and that is a leading feature for them, but they have NO intention of going down the modular rabbit hole in the foreseeable future. If that is you it looks like it can really scratch that itch.

    • @crnkmnky
      @crnkmnky 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@klstay Modular is indeed tempting, particularly now that the various clone modules have created a more affordable entry point. 🥺
      But it's still an expensive rabbit hole which I'd rather avoid. Hours of fun, but not that beneficial to my near-term music goals.
      The Proton and Model 15 are calling me. But maybe I should try exploring my Neutron with a KeyStep first. And that means finding that darn AC adapter… 😖

    • @klstay
      @klstay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@crnkmnky the thing is for the price of a Proton + Neutron you can put together a modular rig that covers everything from both plus a bit more and still have over 100hp of space left to fill. The biggest drawback to that path IMHO is the 'normal' patching on both of those is quite good along with the on panel shortcuts whereas with modular you patch everything every time. So, you have to be honest with yourself if the nearly unlimited flexibility it worth that hassle.

    • @klstay
      @klstay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Perhaps their thinking is the more you turn left the lower the sound gets? At first I thought why not just a straight sub level? The manual is not clear, but I suspect OSC1 and OSC2 outs on the patch bay includes whatever sub balance you have dialed in. This allows a wide range of audio rate (and high LFO) modulation; particularly given you can roll balance, choose sub shape, and modulate PW as well as shape of that VCO while using it as a modulation source.

  • @Magnus_Loov

    About the price of the Proton vs Pro 800. The Pro 800 is actually much cheaper now at Thomann. It shows how insanely cheap the Pro 800 is. I mean you get Polyphonic Aftertouch with 8 voices and storage of patches. Essentially a Prophet T8 in rack form! That is just nuts! It is not Proton that is expensive, it is the Pro 800 that is extremely cheap!

  • @boundlessmind5083
    @boundlessmind5083 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You mention it as an entry point to modular, and that's precisely why I want a Neutron or Proton I figure, if I tried to build a modular with any budget, I'd probably get semi-cheap modules.
    I have a patch bay here, so I can use each part of this synth as a module. I don't like the filter, buy a modular one...
    I can now build modular with great modules to start and focus right away on a proper box, power, maybe add a sampler, rather than dco's, or start with more fun modulations like math. Maybe even build an effect box, or even buy my first DCO or VCO but to use as modulator.
    Sub 400$ modular synth built from modules...Good luck with that.
    This is an elegant solution that can later be part of a bigger system.
    I can't speak for others, but the fact that I could buy this, hate everything about using modular, decide I will never touch a patch cord again, and still have a pretty amazing sounding synth, with a midi connection; Makes it a no brainer.

    28:57 I can tell that you meant its BBD _leaves_ something to be desired, so you usually add an external delay.
    Yeah, practically _nobody_ liked how the Neutron's built-in effects sounded! I was curious whether they would add better-sounding effects, or at least take them out of the default ("normalled") routing. I guess they took them out altogether, lol!
    I'm surprised they removed Sample & Hold though. I figure that S&H 🤖 beep-boop could've been interesting with the wave folder. But there's so much new stuff to enjoy. 🥺

(Or Keystep Pro if that more fits your workflow and budget) If you have a Neutron and/or intend getting a Proton but neither have nor intend to get any patch cables or ever use the patch bay there are great synths you may wish to consider instead. Hades, Roland Boutiques (yeah VST in a box though some sound great), SE-02 (it and Boutiques have unfortunately small controls), Typhon, or maybe spend up a bit more for a Minibrute 2S or Erebus.

    • @craigsurette3438
      @craigsurette3438 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is why the Crave /Mother 32 its cloned after is so cheap. It is expected to be used as a sequencing and extra utility tool for modular, with a nice single oscillator synth voice as a cherry on top. If you were to cram any sequencer worth using in this thing, it would make it too crammed to use, or would require menus etc vs being a proper performance tool, and you would add a great deal to the cost and complexity of building one. Instead you have a sub $200 tiny add on device for those people who want a tiny modular sequencer powerhouse

    Owning the neutron the lfo can be patched as a complex subosc , they ditched the sample and hold on the proton, if i had to make a neutron mk2 the proton ain't it , 2 attenuators is far to few to scale the cv's around + you really need multiples on a synth like this , they could have balanced the feature set better for the proton .

    A further thought on this impressive design - while Taiga is a more complete standalone synth this is half the price. The attenuverters do NOT have CV over the setting, just an in and out which is a strange miss given everything else here IMHO. (Lose the mult in and outs to make room for it)

    Sub oscillators are not proper oscillators. They are basically a feature on some synths where the synth can produce a set wave form derived using math and circuitry from dividing the frequency of you proper oscillator in half to get a tone an octave below the original .Generally you are stuck with a basic squarewave, always an octave below,with the occasional extra fancy option of halving the frequency again, to get a tone 2 octaves below the original , or having a the ability to have a few other waveforms being generated by the sub circuitry.
    The pitch of a sub oscillator is more or less always derived directly from the pitch of the original oscillator, so it is better thought of as an effect, to add much stronger bass harmonics to that particular oscillator your patch vs a proper fully featured oscillator

      It turns out that Proton has one sub oscillator, not two. It's a bit of a WTF situation with Behringer videos, and even the front panel on the Proton letting you set the waveforms for "each" sub independently, but in actuality, we're just setting the waveform on that one, single sub oscillator.
