Another point to mention on old routes is to check the condition of the cable, I have seen some old and rusty or with some wires broken and even the occasional broken bolt - be very careful with such routes

Almost any via ferrata set which is on the EU market has a resting loop on itself. There is a loop above the shock abosorber and this is the place where you should put your carabiner for cliping yourself when resting or the whole resting system. It is usually described in the manual for the set. Attaching the resting system directly to your harness could be dangerous and it does not make any sense.
Also there is no need to put the carabiners on the cable in opposite direction if you have via ferrata set with this type of carabiners which you use - the (double) palm lock. Cliping oppossite direction is must when you have carabiner with any other type of lock, but most of manufacturers use this type because it is the most user friendly and there is less space to make a mistake.
And last but not least - you should wear the chest strap at least if you are climbing with your backpack or climbing something difficult where is bigger chance to fall.

Hello! I saw a lot of your video and I have a question. I've not really understood well how the resting loop in some via ferrata set work. I have an edelrid set with a thing where is written "resting loop", but I'm concearned because it is after the dissipation system, so resting on that loop is safe? Why that doesn't trigger the dissipation system? Thanks in advantage

Please pass me the exact model name of your Via Ferrata Set so that I can see what are you asking about with precision. I can already answer your question but best if I can do it tailored to your case.

@@JetSetYourself It Is edelrid ultralite VI (probably VI, not written in the manual, based on internet images).
Can I also use quickdraws from there to rest? I am a climber so I have some of them.

Long story short, yes, you can use a quickdraw. No issue with doing that as long as a) on horizontal segments you will be able to sit comfortable and the quickdraw will reach and b) on verticals you can take the time to reach rest points properly.
What about that loop there? Your Via Ferrata Set has two loops. One large that gets connected to the belay loop of your sitting harness and one tiny loop to which the lanyards of the Via Ferrata Set are connected. You will connect your quickdraw to that tiny loop. What's the story with the shock absorber if you keep sitting into your Via Ferrata Set to rest? It depends on many many factors. To the extreme and in very rare occasions the stitching of the shock absorber will start to rupture and this begins to be a bad sign. All manufacturers advise in case the stitching starts to break, to replace the Via Ferrata Set.

@@JetSetYourself thank you a lot for the answer! I was scared because I thought I needed to use the belay loop to rest because if I rest on the rest loop there is a chance for the shock absorber to deploy..
You are doing an amazing job here on TH-cam! Keep on!

While climbing I try to avoid wrapping my arms around the cable as you can get some pretty bad bruises from that...

Agreed. But what someone weak with no training can do in places of just dropping?

Thank you so much for all your videos. Doing my first ones next August in Switzerland. Looking forward to it! Does anybody know where I can get a resting system from? Having a hard time finding them online. I already have my via Ferrara set and harness.

I replied already to this question. I will put the reply bellow. If you are from. USA or somewhere else outside Europe you will have to figure out a place from where to buy them (hard to believe that you will find it).
I advise you consider an alternative to the resting system I use. It might not be as versatile as this but still good enough. If you want ideas let me know and I will write it.
      For Europe:
      www.tradeinn.com/trekkinn/en/climbing-technology-ypsilon-sling/136347305/p
they ship all around Europe. slow but new, fresh, original products.
I was able to find it on local websites as well.
If you let me know the country I can search for a recommendation.
Remember, it does not come with carabiners. You will have to buy them separately.
Climbing Technology was recently acquired by Skylotec. let's hope products remain as innovative as before and at a good value for money price point.

Thank you for your response. Very much appreciated. Yes I am in the USA and I believe they have a ferrata near Telluride ,Colorado so perhaps in one of the stores near there they have them. I will try to call there. Thank you!
