  • Nothing like a little pressure to get you to finish a project! With nearly-surprise chickens arriving last night, we had to get this coop finished up to keep them safe.

    You never need to justify the way a project looks because it’s not perfect. let me tell you, your homestead is beautiful because it’s built with love by family. Also I’m a believer in reusing instead of buying new. That is beauty.
    Keep on keeping on!!

    A LOT of farm projects have “good for now” results...until there’s more time to deal with it. OCD, or not...lol I’m somewhat of a perfectionist & I’ve learned that “as good as possible for now” has to be ok. It happens. The more I do this, the more I realize that farming is spending half your time doing what you planned to do...& half of your time fixing/doing things on the fly. And always running to catch up. Nothing really goes as expected...gotta roll with those punches...😂👍

    The beauty of recycling is that nothing fits perfect. Less trash in our landfills and you save a boatload of money. If you want it to look visually nicer go to Lowe’s, Home Depot or anywhere that has paint, many customers return paint they don’t like and you can get them dirt cheap. Have a paint party with your kids. Give it that weathered rustic look. Simplicity is underrated. I always look forward to your videos. ❤️❤️

    • @cpchicks3718
      @cpchicks3718 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ditto on the threshold. A preditor will be able to dig under the door. A 2x6 on edge on the inside with hardware cloth stapled to it that extends out about a foot toward the outside will deter those digging predators. Just bury it with a couple of inches of soil so you don't trip on it. The 2x6 will help keep the bedding inside, also.
      I enjoy your vlogs and look forward to watching your journey. Enjoy your chickens. 🐓🐓

    Congrats on the chickens. Just a reminder that people living the country life should be up to date on Tetanus shots, it is very important . I grew up in the country and as a teen a friend of mine lost part of his hand because he was not up to date on his tetanus and got open wound from a nail and they could not get the infection to stop without removing part of the hand. Not trying to be a negative nancy just trying to impose how important it is to be up to date on Tetanus. They used to be every ten years, but if not mistaken now every 15 years. Shoot even the goats get Tetanus shots as it is live and active in some soils and dust in the barn. Again just a reminder just in case. Great job on all the projects so far.

    All great handymen are masters of two things naturally, talking to themselves out loud and of course, improvisation! Plus Ben, like me is a Makita power tool man! I knew there was a special reason why I like him! I have not one Litium powered Makita because my nickle battery tools just won't die. And my very first sawzall in it's metal case, was drag about a half mile by it's power cord before I saw bouncing in the rear view mirror, (looks like hell) but it still works and still comes out of it's box when I forget to recharge some batteries. :) And now you have chickens! Megan, how does it feel to have a few more girls around! LOL! Have great day!

    Welcome to the world of nothing being level, square or plumb. Both of my fixer uppers were built before they knew what that was. 16" centers? What's a center? But you're going to get a ton of fun from it. I can tell you already are! Love the chickens!!

    Habitat is the best! ALLthe doors inside my coop are from there, screen doors inside and solid outside door. Happy 4th to you too! Yes, freedom doesn't come free. Love ya'll!

    Okay Ben the same thing is happening to you that happens to Jim when he works hard on the homestead. You are losing weight. That is exactly what happens to Jim. He works so hard in the sun and the Heat and it just falls off. Eat eat eat real food. Congratulations on the chickens. The beginning is always incredible when those chickens come.

    They ain't gonna squeeze thru the top of the door after all. That is why you DO NOT feed grits to birds and not rice either! No exploding birds!

    Bacon grease in a soda pop can with a couple of small holes works well for getting rid of ants as well, they eat the salty grease and it drys them up and they die.

      I would rather have ants than to give up my bacon grease!

    Yay for chickens!! I really enjoy watching you two work together. "If you're happy, I'm happy." Also love getting to see your relationship in action. I'm so happy you decided to quit the 9-to-5 grind and build a homestead instead!

      Also, at 09:00, I can see the door you cut for the chickens in the wall... I was wondering about that. Will you be able to close that at night, as an extra precaution?

    🌲🌻🇺🇸🌻🌲 Thank you Meg... So true that Freedom isn’t free. I lost my Marine brother in Desert Storm in 1991 in a “friendly accident” and I miss him terribly. I’m so deeply proud of our service men and women.❤️🇺🇸❤️
