  • This video depicts the removal and salvage of a 1917 Farquhar Stationary Steam Engine from the Peper gristmill in Sauk County, WI. Also included is the deconstruction of the grist mill building. The engine was salvaged by the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Club, which will restore it to operating condition.

The definition of deconstruction usually means the systematic disassembly of something with the intent of preserving the salvage materials. This building example is more demolition than anything else, granted the building looked quite fragile.

Fully agree! There was probably still some good salvagable timbers in that building.

Shame there was no desire to preserve the engine in situ, with the building. Context is key, and it was an interesting building. Sad.

It's important to not let perfect be the enemy of the good. At least it was preserved. Most aren't.

How wonderful it is to see you save this beautiful old engine.. oh how I would have loved to be there and help !
It's also a shame to see that old building being reduced to splinters .. but you can just see the the old girl was rotten to the core 😥

Did you get the whistle and safety valve out of the rubble? Nice job on recording the recovery.

I was the videographer and produced the video. To my knowledge, there were no movies of the mill in operation. I also, would have liked to have included any such footage in this video. Perhaps the Peper family might have something like that.

The lack of commentary makes this a very much poorer video :-( . I found the music intrusive.

Saving the engine without saving the building, shame. The owner probably did not care at all about history
