Saying none of them wore armbands helps perpetuate the myth that the Wermacht (overall armed forces) and the Heer (army) in particular were innocent. They weren't.

The Afrika Korps uniform did have a swastika on it, as it was part of the coat of arms for the country at the time. But the swastika armband was a symbol of membership in the Nazi Party. Active duty servicemen were not allowed to have party membership (no, there was nothing stopping them from supporting the party, which many if not the majority of soldiers did).

Well, I have had the privilege of knowing Holocaust survivors in my life; they somehow survived worse “judgment” by those who did not know them. Well, I have had the privilege of knowing Holocaust survivors in my life; they somehow survived worse “judgment” by those who did not know them.
I think any young person, particularly one raised with wealth and privilege, not to mention one whose grandmother was bombed during the Blitz, ought to be repelled by the very idea of donning a swastika. That doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with wearing a costume at a costume party. It's been 17 years and "people" are still clutching their pearls over this.
It's not the fact it's a costume, it's the fact its a swastika.
If you do the nazi salute in public in Germany you will be arrested, if you wear a swastika out and about in polite society you will be barred from polite establishments, heckled from strangers and potentially beaten up for the excuse that you are "a nazi".
It's the equivalent of saying "I don't see a big deal about the N word, it's just a word" - yes but the context and its history is very very bad.
