    TIPS ON HOW TO HYGGE:
    1. Hygge is not something you experience alone. Always include a person or a pet.
    2. That person or pet must be hyggelig (nice, friendly, and cozy).
    3. Hygge can be experienced (almost) everywhere.
    4. Hygge is not focused on electronics.
    5. Hygge is unity and happiness.
    6. Hygge is comfy clothes and fluffy socks.
    7. Hygge is stargazing in the middle of the night.
    8. Hygge is a lit fireplace while the wind is howling outside.
    9. Hygge is playing boardgames for hours.
    10. Hygge is basically pure bliss with a dash of cozy.
    Also; J, Ben, you both seem very hyggelig in my opinion.

    5 TIPS TO HYGGE FROM DENMARK:
    1: Cozy up with your family, watch a movie or play a boardgame, and use tips 2-4.
    2: Drink hot chocolate. And I mean a LOT of hot chocolate. (To you coffee people out there, yes, coffee works too)
    3: Always, and I mean always, wear sweatpants!
    4: Knitted socks and sweaters are also very helpful to a good hygge time. Preferably made by grandma.
    5: If you live alone, read a book, and once again use tips 2-4. (Probably only works with introverts, but what do i know)

Although it is entirely possible to leave clothes in an unheated sauna and the keys could be there. But then you really shouldn't bring dirty clothes into a sauna and if yu wash clothes, you'd propably take the keys out first.
      So no, you wouldn't find your keys in any of the saunas. Sorry to say.

    • @travissmith2848
      @travissmith2848 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Had similar thought myself. So I looked it up. While not mutually exclusive, Hakuna matata is more a state of mind where you just let what will happen happen. (In Swahili to English it is more properly rendered "there is not here problems" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakuna_matata) whereas "The word hygge comes from a Norwegian word meaning 'to give courage, comfort, joy'" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hygge) and denotes "a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment." It seems to have a strong indication of togetherness, but in the similar words section there is this entry: "The Japanese adjective/verb mattari has a similar meaning to be/have a comfortable, calm and pleasant time, but it is also applicable to a situation being alone." Also related is "[t]he Chinese word Héqì 和气 has the meaning of social harmony like hygge. It also means amiability, kindness, and gentleness. It is often used in the idiom Héqì shēngcái 和气生财 implying that social harmony leads to richness."
      Apply the above concepts, modifying hakuna matata with the idea of only worrying about the intersection of what matters and what you can control with my personal observation of be content to be content and you will find happiness and much will be well.

And even though my house doesn't have a Sauna, my grandparents' house does, and there are public saunas that you can use in basically every apartment building. It's very hygge, though hygge isn't an expression we use in Sweden, here it's called Mys. Well the German words sound the same but have a slightly different meaning... 'gesellig' is an adjectiv and means that you can easily handle people and make new friends and are someone to have a nice time with

      Anita Fritschi interesting! I've met a German girl who tried to learn Dutch too, and I think it's fascinating that there are people in Germany who are actually interested in our little language, especially when you look at places like Wallonia, French-speaking Belgium, where people don't want to learn Dutch anymore, even though the other half of Belgium speaks Dutch!!

    • @lunaheaven1

      Dagmar Eileen I'm swiss though 😜 But I think it's really fascinating to see all the similarities and differences which german and dutch have. And I think swissgerman is, when it comes to pronounciation even a bit closer than german. But I'm still struggling a looot😂 But for me learning it is also a bit of a necessity, my boyfriend is dutch and his grandparents don't speak english and his friends also not very well😅
      And with the Belgium thing, here it is kinda the same, Switzerland has italian and french speaking parts but we german speakers tend not to like learning these languages or never use them, but we have to learn at least one in in school.

    When my family has "Julehygge" (Christmas-Hygge) we usually bring like all our family together, and maybe some close family friends, eat rice porridge, and (if we are at a farm) put it in the barn for the barn Santa. Then we go inside and just do like whatever in the warmth of the fireplace, like play cards, or watch the Julenøttene (Christmas Nuts (a sort of a christmas quiz program)) on NRK and try to guess the answers. My mom usually gets most of them right... Or at least that was what I used to do when i was a kid. Now the Barn Santa thing isn't anything my family does anymore. All the kids are grown up.
    Or you can put on a nice and cozy movie and watch it with the hole family under blankets and with tons of candy and candle light.

    I live in Norway and love to have it hyggelig. You need hygge when your country is froze (for real, no magic) at least half the year, as in Norway. Ironically, the real Arendal is about the most south you can get in Norway and quite flat. If you want mountains that drop straight into fjords, you have to go west or north. By the by, only Norway, Sweden and Denmark are in Scandinavia. These 3 countries share a great deal of history and unions. If you include Finland and Iceland, we are talking about the Nordic countries.

    Hygge is when you are spending a weekend with your family in the cabin on a snowy day, after spending the entire day outside, to then enjoying a hot chocolate in the sofa playing board games. It's of course mandatory to wear a woolen jumper and wooly socks :)

    • @TheDAPler

    So I'm from Denmark where hygge originates (whatever the norwegians might tell you) and I also saw the Broadway show a few weeks ago and thought it was hilarious and actually quite accurate. Finding a spider in your shoe is definitely not hygge!
    It's really the defining word for Danish culture, similarly to freedom in the US. It's something you grow up with and therefore it is very hard to explain to foreigners as it has so many meanings. It can be an emotion, a state of things or a description of something.
    Basically it defines a form of well-being among other people. So even though you don't have the word hygge you might already be practicing it. It's not necessarily about candles and definitely not about saunas, although that might make it extra 'hyggeligt', it can really be anything. Sitting by a bonfire singing songs, playing a boardgame, watching a movie with someone, anything! As long as you feel good or are having fun with someone, it's hygge, so there you go.

But really, you can easily stay at 100 degrees for a couple of minutes, you just need to know when it's time to get out. The usual temperature for longer saunas is around 80 C, but some people like to have short bursts of over a 100C.

    PIXAR THEORY:
    So you mentioned how Anna in “Frozen” went to Oakens trading post and he just so HAPPENED to be selling the exact things she needed, in fact they were the only things he “had”. So I thought “this can’t be a coincidence” what if those things appeared FOR her. I thought it had a nice resemblance to the “Room of Requirements” in Harry Potter, a room that gives you exactly what you need. But of course Harry Potter isn’t Pixar so that’s obviously not the case. But what IS Pixar where there’s a room that could possible give you EXACTLY what you want and has proven magical properties to it. And the first thing I thought of was the witch in “Brave”. We know (in the Pixar Theory) that the witch is Boo all grown up spending her whole like LEARNING MAGIC and trying to find Sully and now lives in a cottage. What if part of her journey was using different types of magic she learned throughout her life to find him was making her wishes become reality, FOR EXAMPLE making the room give her what SHE wanted. Now the two cabins aren’t identical but that could just be of the affect of her doing so many different types of magic which ended up altering the room. And example of this is in Frozen there’s now a Sauna... which means the witch could have added a door...... a DOOOR? To possibly recreate the magic she saw when she met sully? That also didn’t work out since the magic couldn’t get her what she wanted. Maybe she didn’t do it exactly right and the the room just exudes heat... making the sauna??? Now you might be thinking. But wait, frozen is set it Norway and Brave is set it Ireland? How does that work. Well, the location of the cottage is actually as irrelevant as the size and shape of it. What if one of the magics she was attempting when trying to bring sully TO the cabin didn’t work and actually made the cabin go TO what the person wanted?? So In this case this magic made the cabin go TO Anna who was desperately in need of those items and it gave it to her. So I wonder if it worked, did Boo FIND sully and when she did, the cabin continued In going to people in need with what they wanted? Now to take it ONE STEP FURTHER..... who exactly IS Oaken?! Could he possibly be a DESCENDANT of the witch. And the answer is YES! We know boo grew up wanting to find sully ultimately turning to magic to do this. So it’s entirely plausible that she traveled the world learning different magic’s and voodoos from all types of cultures And that’s where she found someone, fell in love with, and had a son named OAKEN. And even though they are also set in different times, the witch has already proven she can travel through time? I mean it’s entirely possible that if the witch is traveling through time, that we see her magic sprinkled throughout the entire timeline, in this case it’s her cabin!
    (Also, I’ve never seen Brave and have only seen Frozen once.. so all of my knowledge is just from all the videos I’ve watched of you guys talking about this theory. Maybe you’ll be able to pull better evidence or maybe it’s not a solid theory but let me know what you guys think. Is it possible the witches cabin is the same as oakens?)

      I think its just a made up generic scandinavian accent. Like all of them mixed into one. It has traits from all of them and none of them. If you ask a non-scandi person what any of the Scandinavian languages sounds like they often say it sounds like singing and lots of articulation on the Ts and Bs and Ks.

    I’m so confused, why do they say the movie is based on Norway, and not based on Nordic countries / nothern Europe?
    Hygge - danish consept
    Sauna - very finnish
    And Finland isn’t even in Scandinavia, so it doesn’t make that much sense saying it’s based on Scandinavia either. I know I’m being real nitpicky here and nobody really cares, but yeah. I’m from Norway and when people say it’s based on Norway I’m just like «but this is someone elses thing?»

      Christine Vectoria Actually, Scandinavia encompasses Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Some people like to include Iceland as well but it’s not common

    • @Colaman112
      @Colaman112 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Celeste Moen No, Scandinavia is Denmark, Sweden and Norway. If you want to include Finland (and Iceland) you have the Nordic countries. The confusion with Finland comes with geographical term Scandinavian peninsula (also known as Fennoscandia) that includes part of Finnish Lapland, but it also includes part of Russia and I don't see anyone including Russia in Scandinavia.

    • @Hutla
      @Hutla 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is a difference between Scandinavian culture, which we can see in Finland as well and the "real" Scandinavia, which is (like previously said) based on geography. But Finnish culture is quite similar to other "Scandinavian" countries, the biggest difference maybe being the language.

    • @CalebSpears1

    "You can't just grab letters from scrablle bag and call that language" - says someone who speaks primarily English... ;)
    (I specifically refer to lack of correlation between spelling and prononciation, that is, you don't know how to pronounce a word if you never heard it)

    • @jakistam1000
      @jakistam1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, we can agree on that. I'm not too serious about it :)
      However, as a mathematical mind, I like when there are certain, specific rules to everything (including languages). I'll never be satisfied with any natural language, but my onw first language (Polish) has some traits I like a lot (like a lot of declination, lack of artickles, unambigous prononciation etc.) On the contrary, in English the word "read" is spelled the same but prononce differently when in past form.

    I'm from Finland and I have to agree with that sauna thing. It is a pretty huge deal in most families. And in my family, we have not one, not two, but three different saunas. One electric heated sauna in our house, one wood-heated sauna in our cow-barn (the original one that my grandparents built in their time, still works, best one actually), and another wood-heated barrelsauna at a lake near our house since we own some of the shoreline.
