  • It's Ged and Kelsie 🙋🏽‍♀️ we are two Aussies making our way through South America.
Having completed our journey to Machu Picchu we decided to see what else there was to discover around Cusco. We landed on two activities, both of which included hiking but when in Cusco, it is to be expected.
We decided to use the same tour company as our Jungle Trek - as we got a little discount, and it was a stress free way to see the sites without having to plan like crazy or be fluent in Spanish (right up our alley).
Our first day tour started super early with a bus ride out to Humantay Laguna, well out to the start of the hike to the Lagoon. The valley was blessedly clear although a little crisp, which turned out to be great as we were soon working up a sweat. Hiking up to the Laguna is tough but also incredibly popular as we were just two of the hundreds of people making the trek up to the waters edge. We managed to negotiate the crowds and enjoy the turquoise colours of the water when the sun decided to pop out. After drinking in the sites we grabbed a beer from a vendor at the top (so thoughtful) for the hike back down to the bus.
The next day, having not quite had our fill of early starts, we were up before dawn on our next day tour - this time to find some rainbow mountains, not just one but many. Palcoyo is a lesser known destination that has more rainbow mountains, more llamas, less elevation and less people compared to the super popular Vinicunca. We really enjoyed our decision to go here as at times it felt we had the whole vibrant valley to ourselves - plus we met a fresh as baby llama (cuteness overload).
Back in Cusco we only had one thing left on our list to try before we skipped town. It was time to taste the controversial protein aka Cuy aka most people’s first pet aka guinea pig! Having got the all clear from our niece Dalby, we went into the experience with a somewhat clear conscience. Some liquid courage from a few cocktails helped us get past the tiny paws, but we were surprised to find the flavour was delicious. Not so delicious we’ll ever eat it again but still pretty good.
With this last box ticked it’s so long Cusco and adios Peru…

Did you go in January? How was rainy season? I’m heading in a few weeks.

We went in September and the weather was great, although a little windy. It is tricky but we tried to pack for all weather conditions. A quality rain coat is a must and a great option for layering in colder areas. Hope that helps.
How long are you going for? Are you going to Bolivia as well?
